  • In this episode of ECHOES, we explore the remarkable story of Charles Goodnight and his enduring friendship with Oliver Loving. In 1867, these pioneers embarked on an ambitious cattle drive from Texas to Colorado, setting the stage for an epic tale of bravery, hardship, and loyalty.
When Oliver Loving and his companion, Bill Wilson, faced a perilous journey ahead of the main herd, their path took a tragic turn. Goodnight recounts the harrowing experience of finding Wilson in a dire state, only to discover the fate of Loving at Fort Sumter-starved, neglected, but steadfast in his spirit. Loving’s final wish was to be buried in Texas, a promise that Goodnight vowed to fulfill despite the immense challenges.
Goodnight’s dedication and friendship were immortalized through his tireless effort to transport Loving's remains 388 miles across the unforgiving frontier for a proper burial in Weatherford, Texas. This act of loyalty and the enduring bond between these two men inspired the iconic novel Lonesome Dove, capturing their legendary journey and the spirit of the American West.
