- "Why, You Cheap, Little, Clip-Joint Canary!" "Don't kid around with me, baby, I know a bottle by the label." Some of the Most Amazing Lines said by One of the Most UNDERRATED Actors, and One of MY PERSONAL FAVORITE ACTORS in All of Cinema: Robert Ryan.
One of the Most Brilliant Actors You've Ever Seen on Screen, with his career famously comprised of mostly villains, who can say a Thousand Words with Just a Look, a Squint, and Shift in Movement. Not only one of the Greatest Actors, He was a pioneering Activist, working with various charities and progressive groups: NAACP, SANE Nuclear Policy Hollywood Chapter, among dozens more.
Though played the most vicious, wicked villains you would see, he embodied the complete opposite with such servitude, kindness, and humility.

Oh yes!!! One of the greatest, most powerful, disturbing (at times) actors in the entire history of Hollywood. Lovely to hear your praise and positivity for an actor who should be celebrated more widely for his achievements.
Big Robert Ryan fan here. Let me say it feels wonderful to see him being appreciated with these homages to this magnificent actor. Some of us knew he was one of the greatest, most complex and versatile actors in a town full of 'icons' who played themselves from the first moment we beheld him (for me that moment was in 'Born to Be Bad'). He endowed even the most villainous of his villains with melancholy, depth and dimension. Thank you for the homage. My favourite of his noirs is the beautifully scripted -directed, scored- 'On Dangerous Ground'. The Cinema Cities channel also has a lovely tribute to RR called 'In Praise of Robert Ryan'.
Oh Yes! I watched their Video on Robert Ryan, it's so good, just like all of their content is!
Robert Ryan is à great Actor!!!!
The lawman, tender comrade, the brave ones.
He was great
How weird, i don't recall youtube letting me know about this video. Gonna watch now, i love RR, he's truly very underrated!
So Underrated, Indeed!
One of Hollywood's greatest, Ryan's presence in any movie scene commands your attention. Imagine Mr. Ryan being told on the set of "Inferno", being filmed in 3-D, "so, Bob, just look into the camera, imagine that it's a rattlesnake about to strike, and hawk a big ol' loogie at it while holding a look of terror on your face...and yes, that big ol' spit wad is gonna go flying right into the audience's face in 3-D!" and answering his wife "So, Bobby, did they have you do anything interesting during today's shooting?"
I discovered Robert Ryan when I saw The Iceman Cometh as a teenager. I was so knocked-out I became a lifelong fan. I've seen all the films on your list and couldn't improve on it. The only Ryan performance I haven't seen and wish I could is a 1958 TV production of The Great Gatsby. I have no idea if any tape, film, or kinescope of it still exists. What a Gatsby he must have been!
Yes, I've tried with all my might to retrieve a copy, but it doesn't seem to be in existence, sadly :/. I believe whole-heartedly- he was a phenomenal Gatsby!
OMG! Thank you so much, I had no idea he did The Great Gatsby! I hope the gods of TV have preserved a copy, so super-sleuth Robert Ryan worshipers can find it.
So Ryan was a college boxing champion? No wonder his fight scenes in "The Set Up" are so convincing!
ROBERT 🌟RYAN A real SUPERSTAR🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A true American hero, locked in the body of a Hollywood villain. He always gave each performance his all, was the consummate professional. We are lucky to have his art forever captured in film....
BTW, I really love your narration. You have a gift for expressing your (obviously) deep feelings about the movies your rate, and I just wanted to let you know I truly enjoy listening to you!
You Are Amazing, Thank You So Much!!! This gives me so much pleasure that you among others enjoy it :)
In order to have a top ten for Robert Ryan you would need a two way tie for 1 too ten
I agree that Ryan was a great actor, who nonetheless could have been ggreater in many roles played by less talented stars. He had more stage presence and movie charisma than any other actor l can think of.
Professionals is good… but I prefer both him and Burt in Lawman. Worth a watch… he’s very good in it, and even named Ryan in the movie!!
Wow, what a great list.
Ryan was just "another actor" to me until I was going through a noir phase and BEWARE MY LOVELY was suggested to me - I rented it from a local video store like 20 years ago, brought it home and watched it 3 times.
I'm a horror movie fan, and Ryans performance carried such menace it reverarates inside me.
Also reading about his personal life - I'm one of those bleeding heart types - his ability to play such monsters but being such a warm human in real life makes me sit up & pay attention.
in no particular order here's my list of favorite Robert Ryans movies -
Beware My Lovely
Crossfire
Act Of Violence
Caught
The Set-Up
On Dangerous Ground
