  • Jay and Mike somehow see It Follows and Furious 7 while floating in Mr. Plinkett’s house in the sky which is held up by a balloon filled with his farts which is not lighter than air so that wouldn’t happen anyway. I guess Jay and Mike downloaded the movies and watched them on a TV with a broken screen or on Jay’s Ipad which we’ve never seen and he wouldn’t be able to charge anywhere. God this show SUCKS!

      +Matt Otter I said this: "Detroit was mismanaged into bankruptcy and ruin by whites and non-whites." Why did I say that? I said that in response to somebody irrationally calling me a racist. He called me a racist because I laughed a joke about how dangerous and dilapidated Detroit has become. I supposed that he thought that because Detroit is about 75% non-white, that I "therefore" was disparaging non-whites. It's a ridiculous conclusion to jump to based on that one comment. My comment was not political -- I was laughing at a good joke about urban decay.
      What's so controversial about my response anyway? The union leaders, GM CEO, and the wasteful politicians were not only white and not only black. They were both. So, it makes no sense to cry "Racism!" when somebody jokes about Detroit falling apart. It was not a racial issue.

    Regarding Mike's confusion @ 7:20 with the rules of *It Follow*'s universe: Jeff explains to Jay a couple times (when he's first explaining the rules to her after chloroforming her and again when they go to his house) that if the entity kills the person it's following, it will revert to pursuing the previous person to have passed it on. That's why he goes to all the trouble to tie her up and have her witness "It" so that she's forced to take what he's saying seriously and try to pass it on herself...without a heads up, the thing would finish her easily and then just come after him again.

    • @snakethefox9586
      @snakethefox9586 Před 4 lety +31

      He knows that, but theoretically speaking if someone managed to run from the thing for a long enough span of time, and all the people previously "cursed" die from other causes before it gets to them, then it presumably wouldn't be able to spread. How many people did the "original" kid have sex with? Probably not many, and considering it was going after him, the chain literally went from her, to him, and then presumably to the girl who gave it to him who herself couldn't have given it to that many people. I can't see the chain being so long that it couldn't be stopped with very few deaths.
      That having been said, that doesn't matter because this movie is a (nearly literal) nightmare: it operates on nightmare logic, not regular logic. If the movie operated on regular logic then one of the kids obviously would've thought to throw a towel over it and film it, or better yet, just demonstrate its existence doing something like that in front of a large group of witnesses.
      I believe one of them also brought up the "dreamlike" quality of it, and it's apt. It also explains a lot of the other weird "inconsistencies" to it, such as the near-total absence of any adults, or the indistinct time period. To be clear, I don't think the movie is literally set in a dream, just that it operates under the logic of a nightmare, and that's sort of what makes it work so well.

Therefore, I should have a close enough estimate to fly between the two cities every 6months-year and keep the creature perpetually in the middle, far away from me. I live comfortably on the dime of the "line" in exchange for dealing with the curse and preventing further deaths.

      No it isn't. The character failing to come up with a clever solution isn't a plot hole. I'm sure there are plot holes in the film, but that isn't one of them.
      Besides, assuming It walks at 3mph, the average human walking speed (faster if it can become giant Tony Hawk whenever it wants), it would only take It ~37 days to cross the entire US East - West at the widest point. (~72 miles per day / 2680 miles). Not fast, granted, but you could never settle down anywhere for long. Even Barrow to Key West is 60 days.

    • @dallium01
      @dallium01 Před 7 lety +33

      It's a flaw, absolutely. It is, however, objectively *not* a plot hole. Their failure to come up with that plan in no way violates the internal logic of the movie, which is the definition of a plot hole

      Guto Neto to be fair it looked like it walked about 3.5 miles an hour. so since it doesn't sleep and just always is moving towards you it would walk 84 miles a day. to put that into perspective, Texas is the 2nd largest state in the US. it is 790 miles across at it's longest distance east to west. that means it could walk across Texas in about 9 1/2 days. NYC to LA is 2972 miles it could cover that distance in a month.

(though I didn't really get why pool scene was there.) One of memorable things I liked is how they zooming in and focusing on a empty street like there's something to be noticed (Before the girl gets the curse). And props were interesting too. b/w screen TV and some clam shaped mobile phone was quite silly but weirdly fits.

    Thank you, Jay, SO much for mentioning something that I have been saying for years... Jump scares are NOT scary, they are just startling (and, in my opinion, fucking annoying as fuck)... If you look at classic (and excellent...and memorable) horror films of the past (The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead, The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)), they rarely, if ever, use jump scares. Yes, there are exceptions such as the original "The Evil Dead" but I would say that film would still be just as good, intense and scary (and memorable) if you took the jump scares out. Most modern day Hollywood produced horror films substitute startles for true scares and they suck baboon ass... The most memorable and well made modern horror films of recent years are those like "The Witch," "It Follows" and "The Babadook" (all, I believe, independent BTW)... I have watched these movies multiple times (and will watch them more times in the future)... They got under my skin and into my brain and I could not stop thinking about them after my first viewing... These vomit-coated shit Hollywood horror movies are dull, annoying, not scary, and forgettable... They are roller-coaster rides that are only fun (for those that like jumping in their seats) *while you watch them* but offer little after the lights go back up...

    It's kind of hard to write a full arc for Paul Walker's character considering Paul Walked died during the filming. They obviously wanted to find a sweet, honorable way to write him out of the series USING the footage they already shot. Had he lived I think they could have made a concluded his arc in a better way.
    Also I feel at this point the point of the series IS to laugh at it. There is no one (or few people) who are like "yeah these guys are badass." From Fast 5 on the series has been a poking fun at itself.
    The Fast and Furious films are American Bollywood. They are crazy and over the top, but we love them because they're meant to feel good and be fun.

    At 7:20, if "it" successfully kills its target, then it starts working back down the ladder by targeting the previous person in the chain. I'm surprised you missed this part of the logic. It was so fundamental to what makes the premise scary. You can't just get rid of the curse by having sex with someone and passing it on, because if that person gets killed by "it", then it's going to make you a target again. All you accomplish by having sex is buying time for yourself, but uncertainty is the price you pay because you won't know how much time you've bought for yourself, (if you pass the curse to a stranger for example).

    • @Senyuno
      @Senyuno Před 5 lety +3

      You know this is really poignant thematically... You can't ever truly get rid of it without sacrificing an entire line of people. Which is never going to happen. And so your only real choice is to continue having sex and passing it on. Chastity is not an option, because then you're consigning yourself to your fate.
      Just like HIV/HPV/other STIs. The only way to truly live on is to produce offspring, and hope that the sons learn from the sins of the father and each generation becomes more successful. But inevitably history repeats itself.

      Yes, and that explains why the guy who gives it to the main character goes to the trouble of educating her about it (after they've had sex). But one would think that the survivors would all b helping each other out such that an army of people would develop over time, all helping each other out--basically all cooperating to keep the most recent survivor moving. At the very least, a team of survivors sharing a couple of RVs always in motion and sleeping in shifts.

    I love your videos, but I just wanted to Note something:
    Paul Walkers death was treated as a huge deal because he is one of the main characters for the entire series (which started what like back in 2001) and died during the production of this film so they were unable to use him in many scenes. So it seems ridiculous that he was given a huge send off if you have only seen this film but for other people who have been watching the series for almost 15 years (in 2015 of course) it made sense.
    that being said I agree with all your other points about the movie, just thought that particular point really needed a proper explanation as to why they chose to have such a serious scene in a silly action film.

Spoilers if you dont really want to know anything about what happens in the movie avoid my comment below:
      The monster takes shapes of anyone but mostly the people the victim knows, within the movie a character(side character) is raped to death by the monster taking the form of his mother. The main character see's the form as her friends, sister, and the little boy who peeks in on her often when she is indisposed. The last form is of her father, it is quietly mentioned using pictures through out the movie along with the hint at the end with another character asking "what does the creature look like?" and she replies "I cant tell you" because its of her father. Fun facts.
