I've had my R6 for about as long. I have big hands so I got the grip. Maybe with the extra batt you could take your R6 out of sleep mode and solve the waking up problem. The RF 100-500 lens is awesome. I shoot birds with it. I would imagine if you were using it with the sports it would blow your mind. Problem is, it's very pricey. I lucked out and got it on special at less than the original lower price. I can't praise it enough. Crystal clear. Thanks Rob, for the really excellent commentary on the R6. I couldn't agree more with everything you relayed.

Big fan of your channel! Especially due to the fact that you are talking from real world experience and not just some spec reading. Also, I like your frugal approach when it comes to buying equipment. I really think the R6 is a great camera, albeit it comes with some limitations. I personally am more video focused and therefore struggle with different problems (overheating, no clean HDMI out, no custom video modes), but I still think the R6 packs a great punch for its price.

Great video, thanks. I've been on the fence for the jump to mirrorless for a while. I'm a 7DII user and mainly do airshow / low level aircraft photography. I purchased an R6 last week. Got an EF 300 F4 with 1.4 x and it is just like I've purchased a new lens !! Going to try it in anger in a couple of weeks time once I've got used to the settings. But I took to the EVF straight away. Was going to wait and see what happened with any R7 but every R6 review I've watched gets past the "it's only 21Mp" in two seconds and goes on to say how good it is. So I'm happy with my purchase.

In addition to backing up my R3, my R6 is my main 4k60 cam and is rigged up to a Ninja V and VMount power and is absolutely outstanding in this role. Your jumping around when focusing during sport can be alleviated by adjusting the priority when new subjects enter the frame. A lot of the focus things you've mentioned can be compensated to what you are shooting, such as objects crossing in front of the frame, erratic movements etc.

It's a fantastic camera for the money. I agree with your positive points. I also agree with you regarding lack of weather sealing and LAN port. One thing I'd add is the lack of voice memo capability. All these features are available in more expensive bodies and if someone truly NEEDS them they are likely making enough money with photography to justify the additional expense. The lack of these features should not discourage anyone for buying the R6.

Just one point Rob that the MKI's lenses like 400mm/70-200mm you don't get the full 12fps on the R6. One of the problems with the R6 and older Canon EF lenses. The grip with the LAN port works only on the R5 and it's £1000! I find the ftp function on the R6 excellent and more stable than the wireless transmitter on the 1Dx MKII.

My R6 is great, when it works. I've had it since Nov 2021 and up until a couple of months ago, it was great, then I started having issues with it. In 2 previous occasions, it failed to power up all of a sudden. Trouble shot it with Canon on the phone and had to send it in twice. Canon repaired it under warranty, but just last weekend I had a power issue again. Waiting on the shipping label from Canon to send it in again. I guess I got a lemon, frustrating because I had to cancel or reschedule photo shoots, costing me money. I'm almost tempted to go back to my 1DX and forget about the mirrorless. I'm shooting MotoGP April 9-10, so hopefully I can get it back by then. I'll cross my fingers that I don't have any issues during the event.

20MP really starts to fall short once you get into the kind of photography where cropping is the standard. I used to do bird photography with a 26mp RP and I would find it lacking at times. I'd say the R5 has found the sweet spot megapixel-wise, but unfortunately that one is a bit too steeply priced for me.

The way things are today, the battery grip price won't be going lower any time soon. You may just have to bite the bullet. I know it's overpriced, but so are the cameras and lenses. I have to have the grips for the reason you stated, placement of my lower fingers and because I am so used to the grip coming from the 1Ds. What I won't do is spend $6-8k for a camera body. That ain't happening. To get around the slight delay on wakeup (@14:00) you can just tap any button on the camera, even the AF button as long as you don't hold on to it cause the AF to move, and it will be ready by the time you bring your eye up the camera. The motion becomes an unconscious movement after awhile.

You are using a lower resolution body ( 20.1 MP vs 50.6 MP on the 5Dsr) with a very slow lens (most DSLRs wouldn’t even be able to autofocus at f11. If you used the R6 with the RF100-500mm f4.5-7.1 I doubt you would see such reduction in image quality. The affordable RF 600 f11 comes with a trade off: You can only get usable images in optimal lighting conditions.

I have the regular R and find this a huge issue where it just hesitates so much focusing in comparison to my 5d3 when shooting in a dim reception especially with party lights. Thanks for the detailed, experienced based info on this camera, which I am thinking seriously of getting. One question: how do you find the R6 video files for editing? I have heard that the IPB files from it are very tough to work with on the computer. I've heard that these files can be hard to deal with even with a high end computer. (altho I have a fast CPU, my GPU is mid-range). But you don't mention any concern. Not an issue for you then? Perhaps this is because you shoot mainly at 1080p? Thanks for any comment you may have.

  • @sagetheowlfatfeathery2083

I’ve had mine for a similar length of time and my experience matches yours. My issues have been a) every so often, it will lock up completely, and the only way to re-activate it is to take the battery out and “re-boot” the camera. It’s happened maybe 10 times; very irritating when it does b) there seems to be an issue with the focussing on 3rd party lenses, specifically my Sigma 150-600C, where it will flutter/ bounce in and out of focus, so rather than a 90%+ hit rate with a Canon lens, you’re down at 50-60% hit rate. It’s mainly when the subject is small in the frame, and doesn’t happen if you’re close/ filling the frame with the subject. Overall I’m pleased with it, and I think for me the extra expense of the R5 wasn’t justified.

Last weekend I went out to a Cove near my house to take photos of some pelicans; the R6 slipped out of the camera bag and landed on a boulder from waist high; not even a scratch. The "facial focus" or whatever its called is a gimic in my opinion and if anything it caused more problems than not. I personally don't focus on faces I prefer to focus on the centre of the chest for sports photography. Here's why I will not buy an r6....cost is $3500 in Canada vs $1500 for a used 1DX with 100,000 shutter clicks. r6 shutter is good for 200,000 clicks 1 DX is 400,000 (my last one died at just over 1,000,000 shutter clicks!!). R6 battery life is 50% of the 1 DX. I'm in this business to make money and spending more than double for a camera that will last 50% as long makes no sense. The quality is at par with the 1 DX. If you feel you need the latest and greatest bodies then get the new Canon cameras but in my opinion why spend money needlessly and cut into your profit margin?

The 1DX batteries hold 3150 mAh, the ones for the R6 2150. That’s not 50%, but may depend on your usage. The shutter of the R6 has a life expectancy of 300k, not 200. And the sensor of the R6 is one from a 1DX. Maybe you will reconsider, maybe not. Just wanted you to know.
