Embarrassing spectacle created by a privileged punk who was laughing until his wife shot him a nasty look. People have been the butt of jokes for decades at awards and other shows. And as a black man, watching one larger black man hitting a smaller black man who's not even trying to fight back for telling a joke on an internationally-broadcast awards show is infuriating. Had to have a conversation with my son about this and reiterate that you can't hit people because they say words even if Will Smith did it on global TV and isn't being punished for it.

his overall speech afterwards, including him insulting Mr. Williams, the character he played, by almost blaming him for his behavior, and then babbling about his life's "mission" sounded unhinged.
Also... I'm an old white broad. I guess I am culturally ignorant as to why so many women of color are applauding him for "defending" his wife's honor. YES, a person should defend their spouse, but he could have just spoken up, called Chris out on the spot that he was making a joke of a medical condition, AND HE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A STANDING OVATION BYTHE ENTIRE AUDITORIUM! He would be looking like a King and Chris the court imbecile.

My thinking is that perhaps the show producers might have been thinking it was a "bit" that Rock and Smith arranged beforehand, _until_ the swearing/shouting started, at which point they were probably like, "Uhh... this can't still be a bit, can it? What do we do now?" But yeah, the Academy needs to revoke his Oscar, imo.

If Smith had a beef over what Chris said, then you handle words with words, never with violence and he should have known that, let alone doing what he did in front of the world. I love that Will Smith is happy to laugh at the jokes about the previous couple (who saw the funny side of it), laughed at the joke about his wife and THEN decided to lose the plot and assault Chris Rock. Over a mild roasting! There was nothing malicious in it. Just standard Oscars rib poking. Chris Rock was so hurt when he realised Smith wasn't joking. I felt for the guy. What a pro to just finish his intro and not just leave the stage and for him to refuse to press charges? So much respect for Rock today. Apparently Chris Rock has since stated he *didn't* know about Jada's alopecia. That's feasible - just because you've worked with an actor in the past doesn't mean you keep up with every bit of media information about them from then on - especially in that business, where you can end up working with a lot of famous actors as part of your career. You don't automatically become best buddies and keep in touch with all of them, or even most of them - that's the nature of the job.

Hollywood hasn't been good for a LONG time. This is the longest period of time Hollywood has been nothing special. That's why actors are a lot of leftovers from thirty years ago, and salaries are still where they were twenty years ago. Some of these supporting actors have net worths of $4 million; less than many of my family and neighbors (in my rural town of 1200, almost 100 miles from any major city, where it's portrayed, with an obvious agenda, that we are hillbillies who have nothing...by lying, failing, Hollywood).

I understand why they weren't happy with the joke but I don't think Will's reaction was warranted. In his acceptance speech he apologised to the academy (not to Chris) but he seemed to feel like he was justified and "defending his family". I feel like Jada's pretty capable of defending herself but if he really felt the need to do something he could have just taken the mic or addressed it in his speech.
It's a shame as it detracts attention from all the winners (including Will's own win) and considering he was representing the Williams family with this film it takes away from their moment too.

Will's behavior was completely over the top, and out of line. Imo, based on many things Will and Jada themselves have (over)shared, they are both megalomaniacs, with toxic egos.
Chris is a comedian, who made a joke about a movie from the 90s, about a strong woman who was bald. I highly doubt he even knew of Jada's Alopecia.
Chris was assaulted by Will, then kept his composure, and finished his job of announcing the catagory.

    • @thesolitaryadventurer

Agree with you except the knowing part. Jada has gotten a lot of airtime over the alopecia.
Will is in a bad place and has been for years. Jada's been playing him for a fool and he should have kicked her to the kerb and started a new life for himself. He didn't - and look at the mess he is.
He was happily giggling away, she pulls a face and the next thing he's smacking another legend on stage in front of a live audience on a live feed.
Chris Rock wouldn't press charges as it is bad for the culture for him to do that. Will should be apologising and pointing the finger at Jada for having him all messed up.
Dude continues like this and he's going to be another unexpected celebrity death as it's only a matter of time before he's drinking or drugging to numb the pain she is causing.

    • @thesolitaryadventurer

@@sharonspencer2796 I'm sure it'll come out whether Chris knew or didn't. The current state is that a reporter suggested one of the writers would have penned it. I'm not sure that's the case when a comedian goes up to host an award though - they're likely to write their own...
If it was a joke he wrote, my feeling is he workshopped those jabs with his pal Mario Joyner. That increases the likelihood one of them knew.
But even if they did, I think it's fair game to make a comparison to Demi Moore shaving her head for a film. It's borderline but it's funny enough to be gotten away with. We can't not have jokes because someone might find it offensive.
And for the record, I wasnt aware of her alopecia. I don't like the woman so I avoid stories written about her. My own take is that guilt over shaming her husband about her affair - on her show, with no apology, laughing about it - has contributed to the alopecia. Her conscience cannot be clean.

I'm an older white woman who could never claim to understand what it is to be a black man. But I do understand honor, integrity, respect, dignity, humility, courage and strength and they are characteristic traits we ALL strive for. Chris Rock has them all and left that night with them all in tact and I hope he held his head high. I wish I were just half the human being Chris Rock is. Will Smith however came up lacking of all these traits. Chris did not know about Jada's alopecia. Will even laughed at the joke because he knew it was about a hairstyle not a disease. Will himself made a joke on national television with Arsenio Hall about a bald black to his face. The audience boo'd him so he looks at the crowd laughing and says, "What? It was just a joke". Will did not ask if the man had alopecia or cancer first. Will Smith is a hypocrite. He took one look at Jada (Will's Queen Narcissist) and jumped to his feet, thug swagger and all walked on stage and bitch slapped another black man on national television. Just like a proper Beta would. He disgusts me. Everything he did that night proved what kind of man he really is. He laughed, got put in his place by by his queen, assaulted another man, sullied another mans name (Mr. Williams) while making a pretentious apology through his crocodile tears and used the inspiring words Denzel said to him (At your highest moment, be careful, that when the devil comes for you,) to paint himself as a saint and Chris as the devil, then an hour later walks out still with that thuggish swagger and starts singing, dancing, laughing, waving his little award in the air and still never made an apology to the innocent man he just assaulted 1 hour before. Take note. Not one person even considered that fact that maybe Chris didn't know about poor little Jada. Not one security person came to Chris' defense. Not one member from the Academy came to Chris' side. Not one single actor came to Chris to console him. Yet you can see many actors in the audience literally laughing when Will bitch slapped Chris knowing it was the ultimate display of disrespect to another human being. What a PoS. I already liked Chris and loved his comedy but now, now I feel lacking myself. He respected the Academy, The guests, Will and Jada and himself and walked out an honorable man. He even thought to say something but stopped himself. Put yourself in his shoes. What would you have done? I would have let Will and Jada have it full force because I am an a$$hole and I wont be treated like that in private or on stage. Will and Jada will never live this down. They destroyed what fragile reputation they had left. Will left that place with the same thug swagger he came with but now with no respect.

Maybe the unspoken rule of Hollywood is that you put on a public persona that hides what you really think/feel and Will Smith's public persona is one of someone ' always willing to please - always smiling ' and to keep that up for so long (his whole career) meant that when the persona cracked it cracked big time like a dam bursting because the pressure had been building up for so long. He probably needs to get some help (therapy for instance) but it's unfortunate for Chris Rock that he was the one in the way when the dam did burst. Denzel Washington has seemed to reconcile his public persona with his real self much better - I think that's why you can see a real sadness in his eyes in between the smiles. I think the shock in the room was more about the fact that Will Smith had broken the unwritten rule of Hollywood and showed his true feelings - people seemed more shocked when Will sat down and continued to vent from his seat than by the actual slap because Will was more or less confirming 'yes the pretences are over - this is me'.
