  • There are obviously a lot big differences between modern and vintage goalies but in this video ‪@KasimirKaskisuoOfficial‬ and I dive into those differences a little further as we compare the two playing styles side by side

    I can tell you from experience that had goalies from the 80s or before then played like todays keepers they would be worn-out by the end of the first period. The pads were so much heavier back then that getting to your feet again would become more and more difficult as the game went on. The size of the equipment is a huge help to todays keepers and that catching glove size is just not right. The stick and catching skills of the golies back then had to be much better than today. Everytime I watch clasic games my admiration of the skills of Worsley, Sawchuck Plante, Dryden, Cheevers,Tony O, Parent,Vachone, Valdislav Tretiak and all the rest of them up to Kirk Mclaen increases. They all had their own styles with borrowing from each which made them all unique compared to todays goalies who are all very similar. I do miss their acrobatics, it just added another element to an already great game.

    Nothing will ever beat the look of the old school mask, but, having some brief personal experience wearing them, they do nothing when you get hit. Slick moves though.

    Will say, the vintage style of goaltending is very visually appealing even though you save less.

    Great video. There's more semi circle stick movement required with the hands more forward of the pads so there isn't the binding up of the blocker on the side of the pad.

      @@BonesyTV @BonesyTV picture Bill Ranford peak form when he won the Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe, Canada Cup, CC MVP in 1991. Lots of "drama"!
      It's the Sawchuk Gorilla Crouch with a deep leg bend and hands far out in front. It's much more feet first which I think you can handle when your modern games isn't getting in the way too much. 😉 😎
      The 21:10 mark of this video gives a great demo on the hands out front. The 5:25 mark is a good example too without specific instruction about it. This was one of the first video training series available for goalies back in the day. The techniques don't hold up well to the modern butterfly or even to Tretiak's Russian butterfly from the time period but it goes with the vintage look and it's a full part of the drama we love to watch. 😇

    1:57 you can butterfly, it's been around since Glenn Hall. Tony Esposito was a master with the hybrid butterfly. In fact, if you watch closely, most goalies in the 80s & 90s incorporated a butterfly every now and then.

    • @BonesyTV
      @BonesyTV  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yeah that’s true. Not too crazy to throw one in there from time to time. It’s just tough to turn off the instinct to play the butterfly style

    A walk out from the goal line to the front was one of the hardest saves back then. We opened up so many holes as we came off the post into a kick save.
    Nothing beat slap shot skate saves. Hardest save hands down but if you pulled it off it was the best.

    • @BonesyTV
      @BonesyTV  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah those walk outs are tough enough in a modern style. And a full on skate save from a slap shot sounds insane. Hopefully I can pull it off one day

    back in the day you had to have a unique talent to be a good goalie these modern pads are almost unfair they do all the work covering lower part of net no reflexes needed

    Call me biased. But back in the day when I played (70’s - 80’s) we had to react to a shot and make the appropriate move to make a save. We used half v, full v, kick out, pad stacks, and everything else with the mind set of controlling the rebound. It seems as if today’s net minder slides around on their knees in the v with oversized equipment, hoping the puck hits them. I think we had a little more finesse back in the day. And a lot more injuries with our less bulky equipment.

    • @jonahginter9558
      @jonahginter9558 Před 13 dny

      a lot more finesse no if you would look it it up the goal tending style is a far cry from what it was the goalies can actually skate and move pucks your era couldn't you would pick the little guy who couldn't skate properly or shoot well and put him in net not to mention the fact that the current style is designed to reduce room for a proper shot also the game in the 70's/80's was a lot slower and the defence men where just there to defend your star player not and that's it, there is just as much skill now as there was then

    Modern keeper pads make the keeper move less and flare older keeper pads are heavy to more of and style is better. Modern pads are to make it like a wall. When keeper is down old pads flare was done old time hockey in general had real leather. Irbe ran his pads over with his truck to break them in. Now the new pas are paper thin
