Make a simple roller speargun

  • Just found this video better explaining the milling and prep of a spear gun:
    • How To Build a Wooden ...
    It's a very different gun than the one I fabricated, but I'd like to make a more detailed video about the speargun that I made with a lot more detail.
    This is a little video showing how I made a simple roller spear gun. This prototype is actually the second version of this gun. I'm using cut-off teak material to make these spear guns so I'm playing with different way to reinforce the laminated joints. I really enjoy making functional things from scrap trash and hope anyone who watches can learn something as well. This is definitely the better of the two spear guns I made but there is still a lot of room for improvement. If there's one thing I learned about spearfishing, is that the gun does not make that much of a difference but how long you can hold your breath definitely makes a big difference. If there is enough questions, I'll upload a video with commentary.
    A lot of the techniques used came from other youtube makers who I have to give a lot of credit to:
    Mathais Wandel shows how to make dowels
    • How to make the dowel ...
    Jimmy Diresta shows the many uses of his ice pick
    • ✔ DiResta 100 uses for...
    I like to watch Derek's Deeper Perspectives podcast to learn how to shoot fish. He's a real diver and also makes nice wetsuits. www.hiheatwetsuits.com
    • Deeper Perspectives- C...
    • Deeper Perspectives Ep...
    The builds were definitely inspired by a lot of these makers. My spearfishing skill needs a lot more improvement though. I definitely need to improve my bottom time.

      dixee6 thank you sir. Please check out my other videos if you have a chance. They need a little love haha. Hope you have a chance to build one for yourself. I was only diving for a couple of months when I made this gun. I think it actually helped me understand how to use this tool while diving.

    Nice video and great gun! well done! Question. I am building a Mahogany gun at the moment glueing up 5 lams and sticking together as I saw most people did it this way. What was the reason for inserting the dowels? Thank you!

    • @wafflebeaver
      @wafflebeaver  Před 6 lety +1

      Ben Argeband thank you for the comment. The dowels are just to help reinforce the lamination. Probably not necessary but it also gives an aesthetic look and can only help the stability of the wood with time. The wood I used was recycled and is actually cut offs of a teak dining table. The way the grain was running I was a little concerned about warping and moving around. Teak is pretty stable and this gun has held up. I guess I won't really know if the dowels were necessary until I make one without it. I have heard of other guys delaminating though, and I think most of that would be due to bad prep or wrong glue.

      Unfortunately, no. I have thought about it though and I’d like to encourage people to make their own spearguns. While that’s not possible for some people, most people know someone with a table saw and router. I thought about posting plans free for download but it’s a little tough since I build my spearguns out of scrap wood making stuff is really just a hobby. Spearguns would be a hobby subset of that hobby haha.

    Nice reef looks like Oahu or kona grounds and the fish too I’m from kona, bro what’s all the dowels n pins you put in the gun for? How did you put the rollers in and stuff?

    • @wafflebeaver
      @wafflebeaver  Před 5 lety

      Yeah the footage is from Oahu while I was living there. I made this gun about a week before I moved to San Diego. The dowels are made because the teak I used is bunch of laminated teak. The dowels are there to help keep the wood stable. The roller is simply from a sailing sheaves through bolted with stainless steel nut and bolt. I've since modified the rigging of the bands. I now have the bottom tied to a cleat with dyneema rope. This way, the bands can be used with more stretch. I guess I should post a video of it works now.
