- Steve Carlesco brought his M45C Quadmount "Meat Chopper" to the Green Mountain Boys machine gun shoot in Vermont in 2017. It chewed up a car with its four .50 cal Browning M2 machine guns firing all at once.
Carlesco's M45C was built in 1944 and according to him, is the only active unit on the road that actually fires in the USA. It's all original except for some newer batteries.
The M45C was developed by the W. L. Maxson Corporation and was designed to shoot down ground attack aircraft during World War II. Four Browning M2 .50 caliber machine guns were mounted on a variety of carriages. Carlesco's is an M51 gun carriage. It was manned by three people, two to feed and one to aim and fire.
Alone, a single Browning M2 machine gun with rate of fire of 450 to 550 rpm was inadequate against aircraft. But four was just right.
The highly mobile M45C was extremely successful against aircraft and acted as a strong deterrent to strafing runs by enemy warplanes. It was also used against ground forces when necessary. As the jet age began, it was much less effective. However, it took on a new role as an anti-infantry weapon in both the Korean and in Vietnam Wars where it was extremely effective.
The M45C was completely electrically driven and powered by rechargeable batteries that were charged by a generator next to the batteries. Standard practice was to fire five minutes on and five off to let the guns cool down. Later, in Korea and Vietman, two guns were fired at a time allowing them to alternate.
"We don't like to run the generator because it's noisy and it smells." But the 4-.50's are quiet and odorless.
YES I DONT LIKE LISTENING TO JUSTIN BEIBER WHEN IRON MAIDEN ARE DOING A SOUNDCHECK AS MR BEIBER IS TOO LOUD
Ah, everyone loves the aroma of cordite in the morning.
Disel fumes versus fresh gunpowder. Gunpowder every time.
I’m guessing that shooting four big machine guns at once is a lot more fun than running a 70yo generator, so that would explain why they tolerate one and not the other.
It smells like,. Victory,.
"It's an expensive piece of gear going down the road." Hell, I bet it it is an expensive piece of gear to pull the trigger on.
I remember that from Water World. Didn't end well.
It was used up to the late 90's in Denmark. I have a certified diploma for my training in these things :) I was on the last team to get this, because the team after us, was upgraded to "handheld" stinger.
That's a hell of an addition to your CV...
"Diploma of M45 Quadmount at Denmark University" lol
@@edbo10 Kinda like the famous US University
Quad Deploma
Dyb respekt herfra!
While I am here I have to mention that I saw this one firing at Knobb Creek Machine Gun Show. It was right beside 3 Mini-guns. What a wonderful day of watching them all shoot. The range guy said: To start this round, a mini-gun is going to fire 400 rounds then everyone start shooting. It took less than 4 seconds to fire his 400 rounds, then 60 machine guns started firing. Good memory. I felt my body vibrating from the sound waves.
Went to a range for skeet shooting, met and old guy who asked if I ever shot a quad 50, I said no. I asked him what the hell he was shooting with quad 50s, he said Chinese'es lol.
A story told to my dad by a NCO in Vietnam 1966 about a battle he fought in 1951 Korea. Two quad .50's as well as all the infantry formed a pile of human debris and uniforms 6' high out in the field facing their line. They just kept coming.
My father was on a crew that ran one of these in the 1950s.
Life goals! I got to have a mad minute with one of these when I was lucky enough to see one out on a range day and I helped the guy do reloads for a weekend in exchange for getting to shoot it. Best minute of my life. My ears were ringing for a week and I had ear plugs AND headphones both on. Worth it!
Watching that thing crank out rounds makes me happy!
WRXXXupal
EVEN BETTER IF YOU STICK ISIS IN FRONT OF THEM
That slow motion view of the firing sequence was pure joy
Owning one of these must be an expensive experience, aside from the price of the actual thing, imagine how much it must cost 4 boxes of .50 cal.
$15.00 CAD per round fired.
@@brianchiasson2465 Holy cow!
@@fistpunder around 4 USD so that's 800 dollars per box so 3200 per fire
Or 4 200 round cans
The US doesn’t go shopping for ammo at gun shops and bass pro, so not as expensive as you think it may be.
Thank you for posting this video. My father was a lieutenant in Korea in charge of a group of quad 50s.
This comes in at a close second to my favorite piece of gear, the hellacious minigun.
Oozing coolness. Dear Santa...
You will need an extra large tree, to fit that beautiful quad under.
May your wishes come true.
Be safe and well mate.
Bob. Australia.
Unless I'm mistaken, I remember seeing this stored at my buddies shop in CT. Nice machine, very well kept.
My Great grandfather was on one of these in a half track in ww2
The only words that come to mind after watching this..."GOD BLESS AMERICA" Simply spectacular!!!
Such a beautiful piece of art!!
My grandfather used a M45c. Soo amazing to see one in operation!
Ah the classiv KrautMower.
Amazing thanks for sharing!
This is most certainly not the only functional m45 in the U.S. My dad owns an m16 half track with one of these on the back. It used to be fully functional, but recently it got shorted out and we have been fixing it since.
Mistah Fox back in early 2000 SARCO was selling these. I think for 4500.00 I maybe wrong on price.
Mistah Fox I was a Houston Gun Show and seen a half track. Cool looking trk for sure!
I saw a transferable one at a Phoenix gunshow back in 07 that was supposedly all matching and original and they wanted 120,000$
I remember a guy in Alexandria Louisiana that had the M16 Halftrack with the quad 50 cal mount with the guns and the generator. I know the half track worked as his son used it at a Homecoming Parade at Bolton High School. I actually got to take a look at the thing after the game. Dont know if the mount actually worked but it sure looked impressive
That looks like a blast!!!
That thing is awesome!!! I put 400 rounds through it at the 2016 GMBC. Thanks
My husband got to shoot that at the Monroeton, PA machinegun shoot. Very cool!!!!!
In cans you wanted to know, the engine on this thing is the briggs and stratton 8fb. It has very limited parts and was also used in consumer generators. I have one on my Go kart. :)
Nice and cool! Thank you!
That should take care of the squirrel problem...
All I can think of is the quad cannon from command and conquer generals. Four on the floor indeed
MachineGun Steve, fixed my 57mm RCR barrel, sold me a pile of .50 ammo, Great guy.. PS, Steve, I have the other fully working M45C, with red dot sight.
You could clear a new home site w/this !!!
Next year the M2HB will be 100 years old.Old lady still rocking.
I would love to play with puppy for about 5 minutes. I saw one of these on a truck in Vietnam guarding a bridge. Thanks for a very good video. (Mississippi Gulf Coast, USA).
Absolutely brutal.
Nice machinery! 💥
thats fire power..
This makes me smile
So cool.
Reminds me of the "Key to the city" scene in Waterworld :)
Am imagining the gunner shouts: "Reloading! Reloading!"
Now THAT"S what I'm talking about!😎
This looks great for home defense
Good ole' American ingenuity!
Yes!
Love it.
It may be an expensive piece of gear going down the road but it is the stuff dreams are made of when you're stuck in a traffic jam.
Nothing says "Get off my lawn" like a quad fifty.
Somebody needs to build a quad mount turret into a self-propelled vehicle. Half truck, half turret. One man drives, one man runs the turret.
The Quad .50 is such a great anti-aircraft weapon. Even though it's not optimal compared to others. It's cheap compared to other systems, far smaller, and far more light weight. Can easily be used for anti-personnel, anti-armor, and anti-aircraft making it a workhorse of a weapon that is still effective today. I wouldn't use it standalone as an anti aircraft gun. But, it can still hit enemy aircraft at altitudes of +5,200/ft.
God, I love this country!!
You cant but this legally
we have them in holland till begin 80's.....nice
That's what we call "WICKED-COOL!!""!!
The ladies volley at the end cost $4,000 for 14 seconds of fun.
Worth it
@@ismokezekush Cost of rounds, belt itself (its practically not reusable), batteries recharge, machine guns amortisation...
lady's
Don't have to worry about generator noise. After shooting everyone in genarator earshot is deaf.
Oh, HELL YEAH!!
50 cal is bad ass thats why they still used it to day
I wanna try this out!!
Lucky Gunner has 100 round cans of 660gr FMJBT .50 caliber for $500. Big bucks for big fun
lol that's not a good price at all for 50bmg
WAgunfun more like 2.50 to 3.50 a rd.
OneGenericName So 250 for 100 Rds
Pricey way to keep the missus happy, but still cheaper than a divorce.
Are the 4 guns connected somehow and controlled to fire one after the other? Or does each gun fire independantly as fast as it can?
M-16 Halftrac was one that had the quad .50 cal.
The “Krautmower”🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Santa, I've been sooooooooo good this year😀😀😀😀😀👍
So sick
I like it! Did these use M2 .50s or the faster AN/M2 or AN/M3 aircraft variants when in their original configuration? The lack of airflow on the ground would lead me to believe they uses standard M2s. There is a video of an original B17 turret firing with twin .50s (AN/M2 I think) and the ROF is insane.
M2, M3s weren't really used in WW2
need one of these on my farm
Loads what looks like eight thousand rounds into the four hoppers? Ammo boxes? Goes through everything so fast you could hold your breath and not feel at all uncomfortable.
I found one of these for sale in the UK non deactivated for sale but I didn’t know if I could get it imported into the US or I would have bought it
ERMERGERD!!!!
One of my bucket list things would to fly in a WW2 airplane , preferably the mustang, but I would love to Strafe a target to feel what it would have been like although if nobody is shooting back you won’t get the real feeling but it’s close enough. Shooting this would probably hold me over for awhile.
Reading up on Chipyong Ni brought me here.
i scrolled down here to post two words after seeing it shoot
HOLY FUCK
Firing this without earpro must be a goddam nightmare
Serious boy toy !!
Think about how much it costs to shoot for 5 minutes!
Like 8 dollar a round, 4x200= 6400 dollar, there ya go. Thats one full salvo on a meatchopper,😂🤣
@@miamigo691 It's closer to like $3-4 a round for 50 bmg ball
What do I have to do to be in the position to shoot one of these? I can’t die happy until I sit in one of these with aircraft bolts in all the guns and unload on some targets
Battlefield Vegas has one you can shoot.
Can it need Upgrade redues make more room of space.?

@@michaeldowns5270 Hey, hello!
while pulling a duster twin 40 mm tank engine out in the field with a army wrecker i noticed dust kicking up nearby. Charlie was taking pot shots at me. a gun truck with this setup when out & returned fire & took the whole tree line down. he never came back I finished the job as small as possible.
That machine brought down George Pretty flying ace in his P-47 THUNDERBOLT WW2 killed by friendly fire accident .
George Preddy, highest scoring Mustang ace flew a P-51D. He scored 27.5 kills. But you're correct about how he unfortunately died by friendly fire from a quad .50 cal.
I need this for home defense.
5minutes with the quad or a vacation in the bahamas.
I need this for There Are Billions
Have you guys ever thought about letting Ian McCollum of Forgotten Weapons do a video on the M45?
It works just as well against low-flying aircraft as low-flying infantry.
3:35 that thing is gonna melt XD
get some!
I wonder how u zerobit and to wut distance
I want one
I swear Ive heard that called the Kraut Mower before...
I can guarantee theres nothing left of that car 😂😂😂
lots of freedom
Thats a lotta dakka
"Load It Load It...Swab it Swab it!!!"...........Chuck the pig-man in WATERWORLD.
Who needs a wall when got a few of these locked & loaded!
How can I contact the owner? I would like to know how much he will charge for a "Range Day". Serious question
I want one.
I wonder how one of these would've done, with a decently trained crew, pulling up against that German Flak 38 20 mm gun and crew, in "Saving Private Ryan".
Actually... My dad was a bazookaman in Germany in late WWII. 318th Infantry. He took part in the battle for the town of Kassel. During the battle the US troops were being hazed by a group of 88's set up on an elevated soccer stadium in town. A company of halftracks with mounted M45's were sent to "soften them up". After a devastating barrage from the 50's the few survivors of the 88 crews surrendered.
Also, M45 were not just for perimeter defence in Vietnam ( my war). They were mounted on gun trucks to protect convoys.
What's the music? Simple, but pretty catchy.
You don't wanna come out of that forest behind it.
I need one
I need this for Michigan mosquitoes
Soooo.... It's the first military fully electric vehicle?!?! See we DO care about the environment! That sound you hear is green joy!
