Blint was the true mastermind of the realm, throwing his arch mage attack dog at all the threats surrounding his peaceful throne
Blint honestly was fighting pretty hard throughout most of that game, he and Crockhold (or whatever the guy's name was) were trading doomstacks pretty much the entire time Potato was clearing his half of the continent.
Once Potato showed up it was over because yeah, ofc it was.
@@webbowser8834 Blint is awesome. He's basically the Gilgabro of AoW4. If you are good, he'll like you from the start, ally you rapidly, and be a loyal friend for the rest of the game.
I was getting really nervous that you weren't going to cast that astral transformation spell after making the Tome of Teleportation sound so cool in the last episode. And even then, we never got to see the full potential of all your units just blinking all over the battlefield.

I notice that the one failure of the AI combat is it loves to over extend into the enemy. A lot of AI losses are being just a tad too eager to get to grips with the enemy.
It also over emphasizes healing when killing would be the better choice.

I guess there's little use in not using autocombat when it does such a good job... A shame, I was looking forward to seeing some of those huge large-scale battles played out. Anyway, congrats on winning the game, I really enjoyed watching you play this!
Imo it's better that autocombat is pretty good at its job, it gives the player the option to play out the battles, rather than the other way around and players are forced to auto to optimise, you can always play them out manually to improve at the game anyways.
As a viewer, I agree, would have been nice to see a few more battles played live.
For the player though, I think the autoresolve strikes a nice balance. The battles where the autoresolve does well tend to be the ones where the player has an advantage anyway, and if you had to resolve all those battles manually it would start to feel like a chore. And if you want to fight every battle manually, you'll still get better outcomes, even if they're only marginally better.
Also, the "retry" option he's using to autoreslve first and then decide whether he's going to fight it manually or not can be disabled in the settings, makes the autoresolve a riskier click.
I've been finding auto battling quite random, sometimes you're at a disadvantage and it goes really well, other times you have an advantage and an important unit or your hero randomly die and you're forced to manually battle
In my experience its been hit or miss. Just had a battle where auto had my 3 stacks getting wiped but manual I only lost 3/18 units.
It's been really hit or miss for me.
I had one battle that I purposely save scummed and lost non stop using auto resolve. But then I clicked the button to not use spells and won, and It was a super heavy spell playthrough for me too.
Went back and did it on my own and it was pretty easy. We had the advantage army number wise too.
You're just too damn good at 4x games. It seems like there wasnt a single point where you were in danger of not crushing this game

Something I really started to love in my own playthroughs was the Totem of Beasts. It might not seem like much, but the ability to just slap one down and get a constant flood of sacrificial t1 beasties to just throw in front of enemy charges and sneak around their flanks cannot be overstated. Even more so if you cast two of them at once, and then another next turn. You can overwhelm just about *anything* with that many raw bodies.
This video series got me hooked. I’m looking forward to trying AoW myself now.

I like the autoresolver, I often choose to play battles manually when I get a new unit I havent used but I like having the option to not fight every battle manually if I dont want to. Also the retry button is something every game of this type needs
Love the series, I'd like another one where you do more fights manually. I think showing off how you can do better in auto resolve is really helpful and entertaining

Hello there. Thank you for the great vids. One thing i've been trying lately, is the astral reflection spell.
You wanna do this on a big support creature (with mind control or powerful support/disable ability).
With double cast and refresh cooldown, you can pretty much get 3 copies turn 1, 7 copies turn 2, and 11 copies turn 3. Which is unbelievably annoying for the enemy.
In fact it is so broken, you can just auto-resolve every combat after that point.
The thing is, to me the game is all about the tactical battles, including the lategame where you get crazy units like the Mirror Mimics and spells that delete the game from your opponent's harddrive. So once I got to the victory lap where I was sure I would win in just a few short turns I automated not just the battles, but also the economy. You can cut down on all the micro and just park your units by a teleporter, the game makes it very easy to cut off unimportant actions.
I believe I speak for everyone when I say, please more Age of Wonders 4 gameplay!!!
this seiries is a perfect example of world building and make a relatively tame game visuals wise AMAZING. I was hyped up 😂🤙

At the start the ability to select cascading power isn’t an oversight it just lets you pre-prep the spell to be cast again and have it in a ready state in case you decide to cancel it then re-cast it soon after for whatever reason

So I've been doing a similar build because I love battlemages and stuff and probs would go that route anyway but watching your vids before this came out gave me better understanding of the playstyle so I could focus on learning other aspects of the game. But I really studied the tomes early on and planned my progression and I think I improved this build.
I started with a civ that has reduced magic buff upkeep and I think some magic damage or casting bonus, I forget. But I rolled through a bunch of buffs and race transformations and stacked the heck out of them and it's pretty wild. I did both the astral tier 1 tomes and the tier 2 that focuses on spell damage and stuff. I took glades at tier 2 in nature, the root buff for shield guys is amazing (they can heal when they defend) and it has a transformation but it's situational. I did most the same order ones you did and I did the transmutation materium one for that +2 defense transformation. My stacks are all t2-3 RN. Spellbreakers, spellshields, and those order t2 support guys. All the buffs apply to like support, battlemages, and frontline defense units. After you get angelize all units are faithful and I plan to get those big order monster guys as well to take full advantage. Also I think that low tier spell that does spirit damage AoE also scales with faithful units so that should hit like a truck too.
My guys have that transformation where their crit chance goes up on spell cast, and with morale bonuses you can go higher. Champion of the faithful means you start with +20%% crit with 10% more per spell cast. I got tons of defense and ways to add more, much like yours. These guys get defense bonuses when attacked, additional ones when support abilities are used, etc., have high status effect resist and innate defenses. Even a flanked battlemage can survive multiple charge attacks. it's crazy. In this build you kinda start in astral and ultimately end in order, doing magic victory through that. It does mean you need like a tome or two more than you need to get the top tier tome but they are lower level and and research really fast as you get nice knowledge boosts with this build.
I'd love more of this. Maybe some multiplayer. Maybe a completely different build. This was good.
Thanks potato for the play through, i think after watching i made the right choice waiting to buy the game. I was worried about auto resolve being overly dominating which seem to be the case and this eps i kind of felt you were sick of all the busy work and just wanted to finish it out. I am sure those will improve with QoL in the coming months. But really cool man keep up the good work

People are asking for more manual battle, but you do you. I do auto resolve alot, i only do it manually when i have a weird build that the IA doesn't do good. Usually with alot of chargers and flanks or crit combos
I got that same replay bug this morning but inversed. I manually played a fight out (They had over 400 power on me) , won it with almost no loses, then when my friend asked me to show him how I did it, I clicked watch so he could see it, but the game played out an auto battle completely different from how I played it and got demolished. Then when that finished, I got back to the screen and it still showed the victory.
Really hope this isn't the end of AoW 4 on this channel! You make incredibly educational playthroughs.
I'd love it if you a) did a lot more of these playthroughs with cool synergy setups and 2) wrote a script/talking points covering what you did in the playthrough and edited together footage from the 6+ episodes into a 20-30 minute "tutorial" of the particular setup ♥

one note about sieges, I believe your armies contribute to siege progress when the hero tags the city, so if your other stacks aren't in range, they don't contribute

I've been playing around with a giga-enhancement/minor transformation build. It's stupid-powerful. Definitely works best in industrious imo. Industrious cultures have the best roster for the mid-late game buff-stacking. Also Nature so OP. The major transformation turns you into plants which it doesn't say. But stacked with the t5 nature tome enhancement, it's all just so horrifyingly strong 😂

I am definitely a bit in the total war mindset where i am sad that the auto-resolve is generally gives a better result that i can get manually because i want to fight out the battles. But at the same time I actually finished my first campaign in this game and I don't ever finish total war campaigns. So it is kinda a nice change. Although the battles are really cool…
It's like Humankind, Civ 6, Fire Emblem, and Final Fantasy all had one giant love orgy and this child is the result lol.

Would love if they added some small detail where actions against spell jammers as an astral race don't have the negative impact on alignment. Like are the magic race evil for wanting to destroy the anti-magic thing? It doesn't make sense that it affects alignment anyway bc the jammer is essentially a tool of war so it should be able to be freely destroyed like any other unit/weapon/tool of war.

27:50 I don’t think that’s how a hydra works
I would be curious if there was economic victory path. You could excel at things like trade, purchasing relics no one can find, access to unique troops via merc type quests, weaken rivals through subterfuge that pummel morale and lower happiness in cities, increase costs of managing kingdoms by terrorism, build harassing units and tech, etc. all designed to bring rivals to a crawl while they depend on you for resources. Once you reach thresholds a countdown starts giving rivals a chance to defeat you.
I've been waiting for another episode of AoW. I'm currently sick and it's the only thing keeping me sane.
I know you say this game is out of your system, but I would really love to see you make a few more play throughs utilizing other strategies. We've seen you do everything there is to do in civ6. This game has so much potential to be an all time great!

I had a replay where the auto resolve had one unit half killed, and long story short, the replay had my hero killed about 3 turns in, and ended in barely winning. Thankfully the replay didn't override the auto combat. Surprise surprise, there's some buggy things going on. Thought i would share after your replay today
The Auto-Resolver just plays out a regular game on auto really fast. It struggles tremendously with terrain. It will put itself in really terrible choke point situations sometimes. I've seen it get 'stuck' where it will literally just pass turns doing nothing because it thinks the units if have on the front line do not have good attacks, but it can't get anything closer either. So it just waits for the front line to DIE to then move things.
You have awakened a hunger for AOW4 in me.
I hope it's not totally out of your system. That was fun! Do more!
