  • Freediving with my ROV MK4 around Kragerø, Norway. Depth was only around 6 - 7 meters, but it was comforting to have the ROV to scout out the area as it drops to 16 meters around the underwater plateau. It was neat to see the ROV in action, in it's own environment. This was also a test to see if it was now user-friendly enough that my parents could pilot it, since I had recently installed the motorized reel. A success on all accounts!

Very nice. What would you say are the major improvements over the 4 generations? Is it all down to water tightness? And 6.6 degrees... chillingly cold!

I didn't really think of water tightness being the major improvement until you mentioned it, but yes, it is improved water tightness. This version is built in the same manner as the OpenROV project, which claimed 100 meters of operating depth, so depth shouldn't be an issue. What I had previously considered the main improvement was usability. The first versions needed a laptop with USB cables, which was clumsy at best while in a small boat, coupled with unreliable software which made things a nightmare. This ROV is quick to start, everything always connects, and it is rather practical in use. The improvements I miss now are related maneuverability under water.
