Jeff George Takes the Reins - Vikings vs. 49ers (Week 7, 1999) Classic Highlights

- Randall Cunningham has been benched after a sputtering Vikings offense led to a 2-4 start. Now it's Jeff George's chance to get the scoring back on track, but he has to do it without veteran back Robert Smith. The Niners are injury ridden as well, with Steve Young and Terrell Owens both out. Can Jeff Garcia lead San Francisco?

NOTE: There was a John Randle INT at the very end of the first half that led to an Anderson field goal. That was not included in the broadcast file I have. Bummer cause it was the only one of his career. Apologies!
Didn't he pick one off against The Colts in '97?
@@deanladue3151 He had 2 sacks that game, but no picks.
Dick Stockton was a great play by play commentator. Miss him in the booth on Sundays.
i have to mute 90% of the games these days
An assessment regarding the Vikings that I haven't heard in decades: "The most talented offensive line."
I think the last great one was in ‘09
@@theseifexperience6863 2009 OL was very good, but I don't know about great. The very best was Hutchinson at LG, obviously with him being a HOFer. McKinnie was very solid at LT, but he could have possibly been a HOFer too if he actually cared more about football than being the next Suge Knight. He wasted so much size and talent. Sullivan was a rookie center that season and was average. The RG was Herrera and he also was average. The RT, Loadholt, was good/above average and had his career cut way short because of injury. The 1998 OL was better at every position compared to the 2009 OL IMO. Steussie vs McKinnie might be a draw and McDaniel vs Hutchinson is pretty close, but I think McDaniel was a little better. Christy, Dixon, and Stringer were all better. I doubt they tracked it back then, but I'd like to see how many QB pressures both OLs allowed that season. Both teams had excellent RBs - Smith/Hoard and Peterson/Taylor, so both had excellent running games.
That O'line was rank #1, 3 straight season until 01 after McDaniels and Christy left to Tampa Bay.
@@jamesrobinson8612 That OL was absolutely outstanding. They happened to be the biggest OL in the entire NFL back then.
RIP, Corey Stringer... RIP, Dennis Green.
Jeff George tossing laser beams and lightning bolts. Recievers had to catch the ball in self defense.
They say George could throw a 40 lazar beam, but couldn't throw a ball more then 50yrds max
Players have said that the ball George threw was very catchable.
I need to see a Vikings team DOMINATE like the teams we had in the past did. Solid offensive line and a dominating defense all the way around. Man I miss those days. Just ONE Super Bowl before I die 🏆PLLEEEEEZZ!!! SKOL👏👏
I’m with you sir. I’ve been a Vikings fan since 1967 - and still waiting. Obviously since I’ve been a fan that long I don’t have many more years left above ground. Also hoping for a SB title before I’m planted.
George doesn't even look like he's using any arm at times.
Looks like he just flicks the wrist and ball goes flying.
Love our helmet/uniform colors in those days
It was fun watching Jeff play QB for the Vikings. Denny wanted him back but Jeff wanted way-too-much money.
Green basically told George's agent to "shop around" for a better deal. Green was not very pleased with George's overall performance in the playoffs against the Rams, and was already kicking the tires on bringing Dan Marino to the Vikings.
Yes. I heard. Green wanted to bring Dan Marino in to play for the Vikings. But instead. He “took a gamble” on Culpepper. Wasn’t much of a gamble, really. As great as Culpepper was. He couldn’t have asked for a better pair of WR’s to throw to.
Vikings were a Great fit for George. Vikings had a chance to beat the Rams in the playoffs, but Denny Green choked in his coaching decisions in the big game.
Denny Green waited a week too long to put George in. But this was awesome.
He started the 2nd half of the game in Detroit, and got the Vikings to a tie before the Lions kicked the game winning FG at the end.
Cost the team a first round bye.
@@deanladue3151 I remember. Everyone knew before that Lions game that Cunningham was no mystery to defenses anymore. If George starts that game, Vikings win. Not to mention how conservative Green played it on our last drive, prior to the Lions winning.
Jeff George at his best. Never seen a better arm in MN Vikings history.
Jeff George was 8-2 as a starter, losing to the Bucs and Chiefs that season.
No matter how good the Vikes were F'in TB was always a thorn in their ass! Was elated when they eventually changed up the divisions.
Moe Williams was so steady and reliable
Woooooow Daunte with #12 what a gem 💎
I miss the days when offensive line was a strong point :(
I always thought George was the best QB with this team
From this game on the Vikings were one of the best teams in the NFL that year.
Offensively yes. Defensively, dead last in the league in pass defense.
@@deanladue3151 I'll always refer to our defense of that era as "the converyor belt"
Vikings had the talent to go to 2 super bowls and win them
Nope
I've always felt if the Vikings would've drafted Javon Kearse instead of Culpepper and not taken such stupid, stupid gamble on Demetrius Underwood later in the 1st rd this team could've possibly made it to the SB!
I really wanted Patrick Kerney at the end of the first round that year.
@@thetruthinwonderland SAME!
Jeff had such a cannon of a arm and literally cod put it wherever he wanted in a hurry. In 99 if we didn't have the worst Secondary in history rolling out players like Serwanga Bass Tate...we could have beaten the Rams.
Yeah, that secondary was cringe worthy
Very true, we even led at half.
Very very true
Sorry but the Vikings were NOT beating or outscoring the 99 Rams. Even with Cunningham or Culpepper. You guys held a VERY BRIEF 17 - 14 lead that VERY QUICKLY turned into 49 - 17, literally out the first kickoff of the second half 😂

I always wondered how 1999 and 2000 would have turned out if the Vikings drafted Jevon Kearse. The Rams couldn’t block him. And having another star pass rusher with Randle, that dline would have been unblockable.
90s Viking uniforms are the best looking out of all the Vikings uniforms
Jeff George had one of the quickest releases and threw amazing rainbow bombs that year.
Fun year till the Rams playoff game!!! 😬
8:16 That tackling form was incredible
That is one of the funniest things I've seen happen in an NFL game.
@@mitchellanderson3960 main staple of vikings special teams history
Saw him throw a 55+ yards like it was nothing, effortless, like didn't really put any work on it. What a generational arm talent.
Crazy how lost Randal Cunningham was without Brian Belick and Brad Johnson to guide him.
Back when on 3rd down the Vikings receivers ran past the first down marker
I don't know what kind of teammate he was but nobody put mustard on a pass like George. Even more zip than Elway.
Awesome three QBs great offense. How did the Vikings not win the Super Bowl.
Hatchette was so lowkey great, it's unreal.
He was better than Jake Reed at this point. Surprised he had zero success after the Vikings.
Gary Anderson missing field goals was rare, but when he missed, he really made it count.
Funny, I was looking through an old box of ball cards and found a couple Jeff George rookies. Surprised to find out they are still worth a couple bucks.
He said Daunte was the largest quarterback in "captivity". If this was today he'd be on blast. 9:30
YOU. ARE. THE. MAN!!!!! Thank you!! #Salud
IMO George the strongest arm ever. 60 yards with almost no body rotation 😳
So Stupid of the vikings to not let him have anther year and draft Kearse. Would have put them in the superbowl
If it weren’t for that safety. This team would have finished with 397 points. Their same point total in 2000. Haha
Culpepper got a pretty nice ovation heading on to the field.
Culpepper #12
I feel bad for everyone that played on that surface as I watch this in 2022
Jeff George was one of the best passers ever. But I believe Cory Stringer died after a spring training day when he overheated. The NFL made some new rules because of it. But I think Cory’s core temperature exceeded 105 degrees and that is an extreme emergency scenario.
Niner's Tailback Lawrence Phillips had some serious issues after this.
Really when you look at numbers who would you want Jeff George or Troy Aikman?
Thay Minnesota offensive line wow !!
I miss those jerseys
That pass to Hatchett was a 40 yard rope. Thrown with effort of a screen pass it seemed
That had to have been the easiest TD Moe Williams ever had.
After watching last nights San Fran game, the Vikes really need a Jeff George coming off the bench…yikes!
Never knew culpepper wore #12.
He wore that jersey number for only his rookie year.
what was funny is he wanted #8 but todd bouman wouldn't give it up lol. i wish we got to see todd bouman play more he always looked good filling in for cpep when he got injured a couple times. but yet moss made every qb look good but i was a todd b fan
Yep, and he ran the scout team offense for Green that season too.
Didn’t he wear #7 starting 2000 until his departure?
They beat the crap out of the niners this game
George was better than Cunningham and Culpepper.
reins*
OMG, that reverse attempt to Jerry Rice 2:40. Every single 49er offensive lineman missed his block. Worst blocked play I've ever seen.
Jeff George is maybe the best thrower of the football I’ve ever seen. Too bad he couldn’t turn it into playoff appearances and wins.
