How to tie the High-n-Dry Hare's Ear: Go-to light DRY-DROPPER Fly

- The High-n-Dry Hare's Ear is an original pattern of mine that I came up with for fishing light dry-dropper for low, clear water. Having a small dry fly that can suspend a 2.3 or 2.5 tungsten bead is super helpful in these conditions. It lands delicately and it shines anytime Blue Winged Olives are hatching.
The dry-dropper method is a great way to fish and a must have tool to have in your bag of tricks. Not all dry-dropper flies need to be large. Some times you need a more stealthy approach to land your flies without any surface disturbance. The High-n-Dry does just that. Plus it does a pretty good job of catching as well!
Tie some up and I'm sure you'll have some success.

Great looking fly. Been waiting for this one, as you know!🙂 I really like the thought you've put into the shuck, as I've always thought the straggly cut ends of Z-lon or whatever you use doesn't look much like any shuck I've ever seen. One trick I've found for tying flies on hooks like the 644, or other curved hooks that have a lot going on toward the front of the fly. As you get to the front half of the fly, meaning the post and spun loop, I reposition my hook in the vise so the front half is level with the desk, not slanting down. The two seconds this takes avoids the heartbreak of having the thread slip off the front of the fly at the wrong moment, like if you bump the vise. Super easy to reposition with a Regal, but plenty easy with any vise such as your Renzetti. I do the same thing with flies like the Klinkhammer that are tied well down the bend. First position the hook to optimize tying the rear part, like body, shuck, tail, whatever. Then rotate it so the front part of the hook is level to finish the fly.

Very interesting fly !!! I’ll be tying this fly up. I like the 644 hook too. I’ve been using the Kype 620bl hook and I believe it’s the same style hook if not the exact same hook. I get Kype hooks from Fly Shop Europe, I really like these hooks. My favorite jig hook is a Kype 300 bl. Thanks a bunch!!!

Awesome as always. Fair to say you can tie these up in tan or brown and use instead of the corn fed Caddis / clueless ? Size 14 etc.

Thank you for the great pattern and teaching / demonstration of your tying technique. One question : What size tippet do you use to fish this fly to prevent the fly from "twisting" your tippet when casting to fish?

This is great information. I have referred many people to your channel for clear and concise instruction. I have a couple questions regarding the finish: 1) What glue do you use to finish the fly? and 2) Do you ever use the glue technique for nymphs, and if not, why not? it seems so much easier and cleaner than a bulky whip finish. Great tie! I’m gonna give it a try. Hey I was wondering if you had a suggestion for a wf fly line for my 10’9” 2wt t&t. I just want to keep it on my reel in case a hatch pops off. I’ll tie my mono rig on to it for the majority of the time and just switch to a tapered leader for drys. Any guidance is appreciated.
Appreciate it! On my 2wt-I use a DT 1wt. A DT 2wt or WF 2wt will work as well. I like the DT 1wt because it gives a nice delicate presentation. And works on any small to medium size stream. If you go with a 2wt-make sure it is a true 2wt. These companies love making the lines a half size larger now. All the top companies have great lines. Cortland, Orvis, RIO, SA. Hope this helps.

Hello, thanks for the video. Do you have any videos on casting dry dropper rigs with a euro setup? I feel like even small dries have too much wind resistance. I’d be grateful to get some tips on stuff like dry to dropper bead size ratio, leader choice, and casting technique.
Andrew, I use a micro leader and the same euro technique casting a dry-dropper. It works great for closer in (say 25ft or so-but you can go 30ft). I like to use CDC flies as they tend to "fold" when you cast and are more aerodynamic. you can cast and suspend a 2.3 bead easily. My suggestion would be to slow everything down and wait for it to unfold behind you. Most people rush their cast and never give it time to load the rod (which is ever so slight), thus it won't go anywhere.
Go in your back yard and practice- stand there and watch it go behind you and see how it reacts in your back cast.
Another thing you can do is overdress your CDC fly to suspend a 2.8mm bead. It will cast easier for you. Once you get it down, you can go lighter.

Appreciate it! You can use puffs just as long as they are nice and dense. Alot of puffs I see are "stringy", if you know what i mean. As a stand alone dry, they would definitely work.
If you really want to find out-do the sink test. Tie one, the treat it with a cdc floatant. Suspend a 2.3 bead off it and drop it into the sink to see if it will suspend the nymph. Hope this helps.
If and when I get upstate Catskills.. both wb Eb tail water likely try a dry above dropper.. so much weed beds from here on where I fish.. worth a try if needed

@@OldDominionTroutBum hopefully get on the tailwaters before next rains.. haven't been upstate in over a month too much weird weather and heat waves too.. next time going to try an attractor like this for a tungsten.. night time i just use dries the local reports suggest.. this time of year it's a hit or miss with the open dam gates pouring resi algea.. so its all goes.. Cory been practicing in the pool ( tiny gremlin weights instead of tungsten hooks in my 20x40 inground with a cheap maxcatch 3wt 4pc 10.6 ft matching reel and cheap thin euro nymphing line.. it's actually not a bad outfit considering i'm new to euro casting.. i watched and understand but do you roll cast with your setup?.. If so please show how it's possible when we have weeds trees behind us..like at hales eddy in etc lol tia Corey
Hi Cory, this looks like the real deal. Will definitely be tying some up. The shuck detail is especially clever.
Just one question - is the post more for visibility or extra flotation, or just a bit of both?
Appreciate it, Ryan! It can help a bit for the front of the fly, but it the post really is for visibility. When the fly is in the water-it will tilt back and rest back on it’s wing with the body underneath the surface film. You can actually tie it without it and it will still float like a cork once treated with a CDC floatant.

No Jeff, I didn't replace it. Just another bug in the line-up. Even though I use the High-n-dry a lot, the Corn Fed is still a top bug in my box especially when I see a lot of caddis.

Rob, it’s a Petitjean CDC clip. You can look up CDC clamps/clips and find them. You put the CDC feathers in it and trim off the stem.

Hey Cory, I really need your help, since locally I can not find good hooks - I need to order (It takes about 1 month to get them).
I just come to think - maybe over the time your hook choice has evolved.
Could you please give me some recommendation on the hooks to order on 8; 12; 14; 16; 18 sizes. I am looking forward to order quality hooks, but I am confused, for example if I should go with Hanak 400 or 480 and so on.

Ulugbek, I try a lot of different hooks and like others as well, but you really can't beat the Hanak 400. It has all of the sizes you mentioned. If I had to go with one hook-it would be the 400. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Bob. I put 2 CDC feathers in the clamp and cut the stem off. You do have to use floatant for CDC. I like Dry Magic or Loon Lochsa. I treat them after I tie. This way they are ready to go. Hope this helps.
Thanks Cory, I really like this fly !! You mentioned that you don't tie this fly smaller than #18. We have some really small Baetis here in the Western Sierras, and I was wondering what your favorite #20 dry would be ? I've been using a version of a Mole fly with Snowshoe rabbit instead of CDC. Do you use Snowshoe rabbit much ? Have you tried Loon's Fly Dip? Loon says it works well on CDC.
I like small CDC emergers or a simple F Fly for tiny bugs. I do use Snowshoe rabbit. You can tie the emergers with that as well. I haven’t tried Loon’s fly dip-I’ll be sure to check it out.

What floatant do you like for cdc dries?
Stephen, I pre-treat my flies as I tie them (this way they are ready to go) with Tiemco Dry Magic or Loon Lochsa. Both work great.
Also, I will dry them with Frog's Fanny on the water.

Is a dry-dropper such as this an attractor, or does it influence the flies below? How is it different to using a little float indicator?
This fly is an imitation. The reason I don't use an indicator is when I fish a dry-dropper, I'm fishing for trout that have moved up in the column and are starting to look up. I'm always expecting them to hit the dry as well as the nymph. Just like when fishing 2 nymphs-you are covering different sections of the water column.
@@OldDominionTroutBum - Thanks. I assume that matching the hatch is not really an option with a dry-dropper...? Although, a deer hair caddis might work when they're coming off. Perhaps the same for an extended body mayfly or the like...
You haven’t offended me at all, Larry. In my experience, rivers without a tremendous amount of bug life, make the trout extremely opportunistic. If they are used to midges on top, I would still use this in a size 16 and perhaps tweak the colors to match your midges (perhaps black). The trout could very well take it for a midge cluster (a la Griffiths gnat).
Speaking of a Griffith’s Gnat-you can always overdress on on a size 16 and suspend a nymph off of that as well. I do that a lot when I see a ton of midge activity.

Hey JP-I use a tag to tie my dry fly on. I use a triple surgeon's, just like double nymphing. For CDC I like Dry Magic or Loon Lochsa. Also, Frog's Fanny to brush it on when I'm drying it. The best advise I can give is to treat your flies after you tie them, that way they are ready to go when you pull them out of your box. Thanks for watching.
@@OldDominionTroutBum What fly rod do you use in your videos for nymphing? It seems like you can cast it more like a traditional fly rod whereas my euro nymph rod I feel like I am sort of chucking it. I have not tried it yet but feel it would be difficult to throw a dry dropper with it. .
JP-I use euro rods. T&T Contact II. I have a 10 2wt and 2 10ft 9in 2 and 3wts. And I do cast like a traditional rod. It’s an abbreviated cast. It is a very common misconception that you lob/flick/etc…This is the main thing that keeps people from getting better. I have a video on casting:

Robert, I like to treat them with Loon Lochsa after I tie them so they are ready to go. When I'm out on the water, I'll treat them with Frog's Fanny .
