Shadows of Evil is considered one of the greatest zombie maps ever made, but I consider it to be very underrated in the "zombies community." In this video, I go over all of the innovations Jason Blundell put into the map, and why nobody played it at the launch of Black Ops 3.

Summary of this video: This map ages like fine wine.
like widows wine

Nah it wasn't the map it just that we grew and realized the map is actually amazing
ages like widows wine
that's canon@@palcron
The issue with this map has always been that it wasn’t aimed at the casual audience. And that would be fine if it was the second, third or fourth DLC. But it was the on disc map, the only one available at launch. So the casual audience which is at least 3/4 of all the players just didn’t enjoy playing it.
Exactly. Well put 👏👏👏
What a kind and articulate way to say "its a skill issue"😂😂
I didn't like shadows of evil at first either because I couldn't get to round 10 anymore🤣 that map messed with my self esteemXD
Well go play the giant. Tbh why should good players not get maps like shadows just because other players suck
@@crazyboysince1998 it's not that "good" players shouldn't be allowed to have a map like Shadows, it's that Shadows was the only on disc map and a lot of players' first time experiencing the game and it was a complex and difficult map which turned the casual audience away.
True, it’s definitely not for the weak. This is my favorite zombies map ever

This map aged like fine WIDOW's Wine. Top 5 maps of all time
Ah, I see what you did there 😉 Absolutely a top 5 map, hands down
I’m so happy I found your channel. This map has been my favourite since it came out, your effort and passion is so great. Love the video!
Thank you so much, my friend 🙏 Glad you’re here. More on the way
Love shadows of evil. Personally my fav bo3 zombies map even over DE and gorod ( tho yes I love those maps too) I get why casual’s hated it but as someone who enjoys the more challenging and hardcore maps it was extremely overhated and underrated for years.
Absolutely. I’m glad the map has finally gotten the attention it deserves, but it was so underrated for so long. This map is a masterpiece in my opinion
I didnt have the Giant on launch so I lived on SOE. Absolutely loved the map and played it all the time.
That’s awesome to hear. It’s such a great map, and somehow went under the radar of most players for a long time, me included haha
I lived on shadows too and i hated it
Have you ever thought about how every black ops map that had a unique one and done cast ended up being top tier. Five, Mob of the Dead and Shadows of Evil are all top tier
True. That is SO true
What an awesome and high quality video, I really hope your channel becomes really big. Shadows of evil was my first ever map, i remember my dad buying bo3 for the ps4 and booting up zombies, ofc i did not know how to play but it did scare me. Keep up the good work!
What a crazy first zombie map, and certainly not an easy one. Thanks so much for the kind words, my friend 🙏

Awww thank you 🥹 It’s just crazy to hear people say that. The grind continues 💪 More on the way
Man's been hard at work. Love to see it!
Thank you very much 😊 Been grinding 💪
The problem with the map is that unless you had the season pass this was the only map at launch and it was too difficult for causal players . Still say they should of swapped it with de
I’m not sure swapping it with DE would be the solution tbh. No matter what DLC map you replace SoE with, you still have a complicated launch map. I think the launch map for BO3, no matter what it would have been, would’ve been doomed from the start
@Det_Somerset honestly I think zets would be a good choice. Very easy to get PaP, shield, and the wonder weapon that everyone can carry simultaneously 🤔 perhaps zets would be as popular as it deserves to be if it was the disc map
Don’t know about zets, I personally hated that map.. never got past round 13 and I’m level 1000 with a couple 255 runs… 😂 I got bored in lockdown! 😂
You didn't expect the response you got? Brother, you word things beautifully and the humor is well timed when it's included. You put your soul into these and it shows.

Absolutely! Thank you so much for your support, as always 🙏
Actually for the shield upgrade they later fixed it to where when you upgrade it’s permanent now “Goddard apparatus” and as a bonus unlike the regular shield where you have to wait for it to break before you can replenish the durability with the upgraded shield you can keep spamming for a new shield at the workbench and it replenishes the durability for free it’s pretty broken
Fantastic video! Subscribed
Thank you so much, my friend 🙏
Your entire channel is underrated
Thank you very much, my friend 🙏
Something i learned from doing the melee challenge to clean the stone in Origins, Widow's Wine makes your knife a one hit kill to round 5.
I would love to see a video of how Jason Blundell saved and killed Zombies mode (video essay). Btw I love this video essays, they’re a lot of fun, help me remind the good times (well… for me good times were tranzit 😂)
Thank you for the kind words. That could make for a really good video. And yes, as much as I dislike Tranzit, they were the “good ol’ times” indeed 🥹
@@Det_Somerset I know tranzit was bad, but for me the important thing about it were the theories, like the route B, tranzit being a clock and the horse 😂 I don’t care about the map but 14 yo old me believe everything, and we thought the nav cars were going to be important. Well, sorry for my English, not my main language, an keep killing it man 😁
@@Pablo-uz3yc No need to apologize. Your English is great. And yeah, I totally agree. The experience of working together with a community of like-minded gamers coming up with theories that wound up being completely wrong was what made that era so good for zombies. I hope we go through another era like that one day.
Hey man first of was going to say that I am so happy you are getting the deserved attention! 🤝🤝
Thank you very much, my friend 🤝
My biggest problem with sov was the civil protector.
You already have quick revive, then you have teleport gobble gums, then you have lil arnies, you have the sword slam killing all nearby enemies and as if it is not enough you get a buddy that revives and supports you?
You basically can not die and this takes the fun of surviving in zombies.
Still it is my favorite zombies maps of all time, first hated it and discovered its real beauty later on.
I don’t know if I would consider SoE “easy” because of these features, but I totally get what you’re saying. One of my favourite maps too

I played Shadows the most, I only really played the Giant when I wanted to brain off but I really wanted to learn how Shadows worked and I loved the complications of it
I loved Shadows since day 1 the biggest issue and reason why I played The Giant more is because the Bo3 servers on PC were awful at launch. The game would crash lobbies CONSTANTLY meaning I'd do all the set up make it to round 25 and the game would get shut down not only losing all my progress on the map but also robbing me off the weapon exp and camo progress.
i remember playing SOE on day one on playstation and i didn’t buy ps plus because that was my first playstation console, all i remember is that it was really difficult only playing SOE on day one because the zombies started sprinting fast past round 1, my expectations were wanting something like bo2 but Expanded and with more older guns then bo3 base weapons choices
Shadows of evil is one of my favorite maps since bo3 launch amazing theme song and the Easter egg was fun to do with friends
It’s just SO good
Shadows of evil was so innovative and content rich that it WAS jarring coming off the heels of boII zombies, but it was also a lot of fun to figure out and explore. As I learned more about the map, it only got more fun to play.
Looking back at it, I think I love/loved SOE so much because it combined the best elements of the previous mainline maps of boII. It has Tranzit's level design with it being a big map comprised of smaller closed off, yet interconnected areas, each of those areas has a step[s] for you to complete in order to pap and/or craft the wonder weapons like origins, it has mob's asthetic being set in the early 20th century and featuring four gritty criminals in what feels like purgatory, the map features a new busted and equally expensive perk and an npc helper like buried, and almost every area on the map has an upper pathway which COULD be a knod to die rise who'swhole gimmickwas verticality.
Well spoken!
Definitely learned to appreciate the map throughout the years. Always go back to this map when im wanting something fresh & different , however its VERY overwhelming getting paired up w/ people who have no clue or Dash board the second they get downed !
Still my favorite map! Hard to find a good public game lately but still.
Public matches of old were always so much chaotic fun
As a high round player this was my first map and I still play it to this day G.O.A.T map
This map is my whole teenage life awesome video 👍🏽
I don't think bro knows what underrated is
Oh man, I was overwhelmed when I first started this map. Beast mode felt confusing for me, I had no idea how progressing PAP worked, and this was all while messing with gobblegums and new mechanics for the first time.
It was only once I started engaging with EE steps in other, simpler maps that I realized how well tuned Shadows of Evil is. Definitely a hump in this generation of zombies, trying to make EE main quests the focus of "successful" runs.
PS: Except for the flag step. Fuck that part, only tolerable if you cheat with gobble gums
😂😂 I also hate the flag step. VERY much. But yes, I totally agree. This map was very overwhelming for being a launch map. But now that time has passed, I understand the mechanics of BO3 very well, and I have played the map hundreds of times, I would say it is one of the all-time best maps.
I still don’t know what the canisters are for, the ones that appear sometimes after fumigating a pod
They're for refueling the rocket shield Boost attack
I really like SOE, the vibes are really good, the unique weapons are great, the margwa is the best mini boss in my opinion; the only issue with it is that it takes a long time to set up properly. I don't have a lot of time to play bc of work so I have no motivation to play it bc getting down means losing 30mins of just setting up the session.
True. Shadows almost requires you to make plans to play it
Ooooo this is gonna be a good one. My favorite zombies map of all time!
Heck yeah 💪
There was a robot like the civil protector on alpha omega, but I think we all forgot about that map
Was there?! I’ve only played Alpha Omega twice so it wouldn’t surprise me 😂
Civil protector was also kinda on bo4 alpha omega. Nerfed out the booty but there. Good video!
I literally saw this was 30 minutes and then got baited so hard by the fake endscreen omg, this is amazing
😂😂 Gotcha! Thanks for watching, my friend
@@Det_Somerset Look forward to watching more haha!
Underrated (un-der-ay-ted)
~ a word used to describe a map that is generally considered top 5-3 by youtubers and enjoyed by the wider community
Loved the video im just curious qbout one thing,
I thought all the black ops 2 shields were the exact same? Aren't they? Oh and the shadows of evil shield when you upgrade it gives it more health one more rocket boost.
Thank you very much, my friend. All of BO2’s shield function the same, yes. You can store it on your back to protect you, or pull it out to protect your front or use the shield bash mechanic.
But in Tranzit you could only pick up one part at a time. In Mob you can pick up all three parts. And in Origins they nailed how the parts spawn; one of a few possible locations, and slightly hidden but also obvious once you know where to look.
@@Det_Somerset I see you could also place them on the ground. Not sure why people would do this but you could haha
@@HotPocketEnjoyer Haha I COMPLETELY forgot you could do that! Wow
@@Det_Somerset right so damn funny. We went from shield that can be placed on the ground to shields that have magical spears that teleport back to you when you throw it and then to no shields I hate cold war 🙂
There is a civil protector - like character in Revelations and Alpha omega too!
Also technically Zombies in Spaceland.
Huh. I’ve only played Alpha Omega twice and Spaceland once, so I must’ve missed that feature. Thanks for pointing it out
Shadows is a great map, but I think the issue is the fact it was the only launch map. BO1 had the easy to get into kino and the more challenging five to offset that. BO2 had tranzit, but you could always play town survival. SOE Being the standalone map doesn’t work imo, as it alienates the casual players from the players who want more quest based objectives in zombies. I think Der Eisendrache balances these elements better, and that The Giant should have been a free map to pair alongside SOE. However, when treated as just another map like the others, I think it’s a really cool map. Probably around my 7th favorite map or so
Yeah, locking the “casual map” behind a paywall was quite the move from Activision. You’re right, SoE being the only free map alienates the casual player base from zombies almost entirely. Because SoE is an incredible map, but The Giant is the better map to learn all of the new mechanics on
I might be the very few people who actually liked and loved Shadows of Evil from launch. Top 3 Zombies map for me is 1. Mob of the Dead 2. Shadows of Evil 3. Kino der Toten
Origins is my favorite map. I still believe Shadows is the best map. It takes some of the best mechanics of previous maps and gives new skins and uses to it.
The only thing i don't like is the meatball attacking the flag parts is the one roadblock I've never gotten past.
don’t give up ❤
Never 💪
here from the discord LETS GOOOO
Heck yeah!! Discord fam 💪💪
Never really gave shadows of try, always found it too difficult but after watching your vid I might have to check it out
It’s really worth your time. It can be a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll really start to love it
Ive watched every other zombies essay why not another 🤷🏻♂️
It’s pretty rated as one of the best
There was a version of the civil protector in revelations
On bo2 I played mostly multiplayer but since shadows I got to lvl 42 in MP and prestige master on zombies. I played soe and literally never touch mp again
Yooo! That’s sick! I love that. BO3 Zombies is one of the greatest modes/games ever created, hands down
Cool video, the only criticism i have is that it isnt underrated. This map is regarded as "The best map of all time" when it really isnt. The map is overrated
Oof. Now THERE’S a hot take 😬
To this day i struggle to nade the 500 point paper, any tips?
The crosshairs will open 3 times before the grenade goes off. Hang on until the very last second of the third time it opens. It’ll take some practice but you’ll get it eventually
I bought bo3 because of this map and this map alone, after playing for hours on my mates console split screen
That’s awesome! Absolutely worth the purchase
I can appreciate how well done the map is in terms of sound track, atmosphere, story, but for someone new at the time it was too difficult and it just wasn't fun like The Giant was/ is. SoE was not casual AT ALL.
Precisely. It’s a great map objectively, and if you take the time to learn it you’ll be able to play it more efficiently. However, it was an extremely difficult map for being the launch map to help people learn the mechanics of BO3.
Ultimately, I think that’s part of the reason why The Giant was released at launch too, but people just played it instead of SoE BECAUSE SoE was difficult.
I remember when soe came out I was like oh god they are gonna mess it up, nowadays I play this map like religiously because it’s so good, now that guides exist hahahahabah
Hahaha yeah true. First time playing is quite overwhelming for sure. Now I consider it almost perfect
The civil protector actually came back in alpha omega in the form of ADAM.
Yeah, some other comments were telling me this. To be honest, I’ve only played Alpha Omega twice, so I had completely forgotten (or had no idea) that Alpha Omega had such a feature
@@Det_Somerset I like your content. You should make more analysis videos of different maps and stuff.
Correction, Black Ops 2 Had All DLC Released First oN XBOX As Ah Exclusivity Deal. So BO2 Was The First COD For Exclusivity.
Yup. That’s what I said. I also said that BO3 was the first game in the PlayStation exclusivity deal.
The Xbox DLC exclusivity started with MW2 (2009) not BO2. Then it ended on Xbox with BO3 and swapped to playstation getting it first.
World at war was the first call of duty to have a beta
Technically the a.d.a.m unit was the next one we had for a “civil protecter” type bot, but who really cares about Alpha Omega? Other than that great video🎉
😂😂 Facts. Thanks for watching the video, my friend 🙏
@@Det_SomersetDon’t forget the Keeper protector from one of your favorite maps
This map is not underrated? Its beloved by the community.
It gets more attention now, which is great. But until now, this map has gone under the radar for so many players for many years
If the giant didn't launch with shadows of evil, all the casuals playing the giant would of just played multiplayer or a previous cod title. half the community just doesn't enjoy maps that require learning SO much. Playing a chore just to die to some random zombie behind you because there's no casual friendly training areas. Shadows seems to get more popular the longer it has been BECAUSE the casuals don't talk about zombies anymore, only diehard lifelong players that already know the map.
Very well spoken. Absolutely agree
How could you leave out Neal McDonoughs most famous film roll as the bad guy Vincent in Paul Blart Mall Cop 2?

Loot boxes was because of team fortress 2 and valve not cod fyi
I mean, gambling has been around for hundreds of years. I understand that they were in games BEFORE Call of Duty, but Call of Duty popularized it, changing the gaming industry
@@Det_Somerset the people who make call of duty stole the whole idea of loot creates from pc gaming lol. Without pc games or valve , consoles would be staler than a piece of bread . They didn’t even have recoil on cod until years later .
@@Det_Somersetfifa popularised it
Underrated? What do you mean? The cod community hasn't shut up about bo3 for years...
Since the pandemic. There were 5 years between the release of BO3 and the pandemic, and all everyone was talking about was DE, GK, or how much everyone disliked BO4. It wasn’t until the pandemic, when zombies regained popularity, the SoE came back into the spotlight and everyone appreciated it more.
In the video I acknowledge that it is a for more popular map NOW, but during those 5 years, not a peep from anyone.
I think Shadows was just too ambitious for its own good.
As you mentioned, there are so many elements to learn and keep track of that I think it wasn't rewarding enough for players to keep playing or learn.
In my personal case, I think it was the map design and somewhat the new mechanics that were the major issues of the map.
The focus on narrow alleyways and sections was a bold move but just not our cup of tea and to be frank, made it very difficult to navigate flawlessly as previous maps. And I don't know if it was fixed later, but on launch we had MAJOR issues with the wall climbing that it was very much dependent on it for some easter eggs to be solved, something we got tired of trying since it was just not working.
For context, me and my brother have played zombies since WaW, a mode we truly enjoy as a sibling pastime. We learned the maps all the way through but Shadows was just not appealing, and it's not that is difficult, but frustrating. "Too much to setup" was the right wording for the map
But if you enjoyed it that is alright, I think you made very clear and convincing points, but to me it just doesn't cut it as a great map, not even a Top 10, it could've been more with a bit more time and polish to better guide the player as to be dependent on a specific route. As it is, it's not bad but not great.
Hope it helped bring a perspective to the "not good" side of the community about this map. Keep doing videos man they are great🎉
That’s definitely an interesting perspective. I don’t know that I would call the map “ambition” personally, but I do think that it was too challenging of a map to learn all of the new mechanics BO3 introduced to zombies. Thank you for checking out the video, and more than that, thank you for your take. That’s what these videos are for; conversation starters.
@@Det_Somerset That's actually true, people were turned off by how complicated it was at the start. No but thank you for reading and answering! It was a well researched and insightful video. It made me question my judgement on the map so hats off to you man!
It’s heavily compared to mob of the dead which a lot of the mechanics are extremely similar, especially the narrow pathways being simply just challenge for the player. Everything you’re doing benefits the player or “rewards” the player in some manner, opening any door has something to benefit you. The greatness about the map is how much there is to do but how little you can do to simply just play high rounds. Even for PAP you need one part per area, open one door using beast per area and have PAP open. Even the map layout is not difficult to learn, four streets that come back to a conjunction, down in pack a punch the portals are facing the area that you’ll end up in. Just like any map it takes time to learn it, it’s not going to have simplicity of waw or early bo1 at all. Why would it? It’s been consistently getting more and more exciting, complex, and packed full of things to do. You could say everything you did about this map to origins, confusing, a lot of set up, difficulty levels and even not rewarding enough. Everything said about this map can be said about origins and mob, maps that are recognizable by the community to be some of the best
ok it is new or-lens that is how it's pronounced I live in louisisana and can't stand it being botched like that. it's just in my blood sorry about the nit picky comment
Haha yeah sorry. I even used to live in Louisiana and I got it wrong. I guess the Canadian accent has taken over
Eh, I still think Origins is better, but of course that’s just me
My favourite is Der Eisendrache, but I think DE, Origins, and SoE are interchangeable for the title of “best map.”
I dont care what people say, the maps trash. An hour in and youre on level 5 just to get a very boring experience. Even if it was simpler, the base map is just boring as all hell to play on
Oof. Wild take
Let me try to change your mind The flow is perfect pap to the sword steps your killing while doing these activities keeping the rounds going later on once you get the apthocen and the sword id argue you feel more powerful than any other map amazing high round map also the beast mode system is really good allowing shortcuts and you get to choose what to open or close the layout is simple and easy to travel the setting and atmosphere is top notch give this map another chance!
Definitely not underrated… possibly the most overrated map next to DE and origins but wayyy better than those two. It would be a good map if they ditched the buildable wonder weapon idea and put it in the box instead. Also if they got rid of the sword quest and put it in the box as an alternative to arnies. It’s too annoying to do the lengthy quest every game to get or upgrade. Also they shouldn’t have put AATs in the game but that’s more of a BO3 issue than a SoE issue. Good map otherwise
