WHAT A BEAST! This filter from Maidenhead Aquatics shifts a torrent of water and holds a nation of media - 8kg of Biohome Ultimate easily fit in this filter.
Since it holds at least 8kg of biohome ultimate it is really suited to normally stocked tanks of up to 800 litres (210 US gallons) or heavily stocked tanks of up to 400 litres (105 US gallons) if you want to achieve a full cycle.
However....I reckon you could easily get another 500g of media in each tray and still have them fitting together properly taking the potential total up to 10kg which is double the amount an FX5 or FX6 will take.
Awesome stuff...just make sure to set it up properly as the way it comes from manufacturer is all messed up. This filter has massive potential and a huge capacity for great aquarium filtering when set up properly.
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.....you'll spend less money on treatments too......basically the filter is the foundation of a successful aquarium.

Pondguru I think for the top basket I’d just leave the handle off, what I like with this filter is for maintenance all you need to do it mess about with that top tray. No taking the lot out just to swap the fine pad out ! Great vid guru
FishPie yep, that's what I like about this filter. Top off and you only need to pull the top tray out to clean. No having to get to the bottom having to take the bio media out.
Are these available in the USA? If so, how much do they cost? Would it be overkill for a 75 gallon tank if set up for a community of rainbowfish?
It is so much easier to maintain with this flow order. As for annoyance with the handle cut the pad and twist it around if you want.
I don't know why, but there's something incredibly soothing watching you deconstruct filters.

Bought 10kg BH-ultra last year and pimped up my huge Tetratec EX 2400 (400-1000L) filter for my predator tank. (Looks alot like this one) Got all 10kg in the treys, even one tray with mec filters and ceramic sylinders in the bottom layer.

If you cut a slot in the pads from the outside to the centre hole you can avoid the messing about with the handles.

These used to be sold by Aqua One as the Nautilus 2700 around 10/15 years ago. I think they also had an optional UV version. They now have a new range with the Ocellaris 3000 being the largest which I think will even dwarf this!

Probably one of the nicest reviewers for filters on the web. The Aquamanta EFX 600 Canister is something I'll look into, just concerned about if it leaks. Just found out it's not available in North America.
I own the EFX 300 and it works the opposite way water comes in from the top down to the bottom settles out then rises through the sponges then the media, I use the biohome media ultimate and can say it's a superb product and my water is lovely especially the parameters...

Similar filters to the Aquamanta efx600 I have found are, Aqua One Nautilus 2700, Tetratec EX2400, Marineland C-530
I looked at the manual and that black pipe is the propeller cover. So with that out of place you’re going to get terrible filtration. I wish, I could look at the directions not that it matters because I live in the USA. Again love this series and your mega pond filter build. And I did giggle to myself when I saw how they want it setup.
My goodness if more people send you a filter this size again, you'll be out of business in no time lol?? At my LFS, for 5 kgs of Biohome Ultimate is $125 bucks plus tax!! Well done as usual Richard!

How do filter manufacturers make such big cockups whith the placing of the filter media ... have we seen one yet get it right?????????
I have run one of these filters for about 7 months and have it set up exactly the same way as you have just done, but the 1st one I had to return as the lid would not come off and the release handles snapped off trying, it turns out to be a fault which is exactly the same as the one you have in the filter, the piece of black plastic pipe in the bottom tray should actually be pushed into the suction part of the on the filter head, this allows it to draw water up though the centre pipe better, without it being attached and down in the bottom of the filter try like yours is, ( mine arrived the same) is why mine broke , when returned my filter to maidenheads they had to break the filter head off using a knife jammed into the join between the head and body to realise it , I was then given a replacement filter , without the pipe fitted correctly the filter head actually becomes stuck (due to a suction effect they told me) the pipe should be attached into the head at the factory but obviously isn’t properly or is coming loose in transit. It’s Very bad fault and the owner will find in time that trying to remove the head become more difficult each time. Until the handles snap. The pipe just pushes into the head easily. So make sure you fit it

Mattias yes it is quiet, only noise is from if air gets stuck in the filter on start up , but a quick shake normally releases it. No problems with it leaking at all, I do use a little silicone grease on all the rubber seals to help it seal though, but I do that on all my filters
Hi Andrew mine came with the pipe attached and it was still a pain to remove the head unit! At first I thought it wasn't enough grease on the o ring so plastered it with vaseline and it's still a pain! Feels like the clips will break Every time
@@andrewjones7670 Thanks! I also use silicon grease on my filter. Iam using the Aquael Unimax but i want another filter for one of my other tanks. I might look more into this filter.

I think you’re cheating Richard😁. This filter can fit 10 kilograms of biohome ultimate, its really big filter. This is the largest canister filter i’ve ever seen. I need to order more Biohome ultimate. Thank you for this video, i now have one of this. Perfect to run along with my fluval fx6

Ponguru, It might be worth making a video on how to clean a canister filter the proper way and to maintain the beneficial bacteria. So many people set it up and run it properly but fail to clean it correctly...

I think that random piece of pipe connects to the pump Richard not sure if it makes a difference though! I've got mine set up with substrat pro which I think is the same size and shape as bio gravel and each tray holds 3.9kg! So just short of 12 kilos of media! HTH

Well that has me thinking, I run a pair of All pond solutions ef2000 with one of their pre filter on each and that holds 10kg of media. The set has the edge over a efx600 but it's a close run thing and at about the same cost..... wonder if maidenhead do a pre filter, need to check

Hi, great video. I was wondering with the flow rate being so high, do you think this would be suitable for a 400l planted community tank? I'm just in the process of setting one up and I've not owned an aquarium for about 7 years, so I'm just remembering how difficult it can be making these decisions. I have been tempted by the fx 4, my friend is trying to get me to go for fx 6 but my main concern is the actual flow within the tank, I'll have small/medium fish and I dont want to tire them out. I have the 400 model on my tank, they really are a great filter. I'm pretty sure they are made by Aqua One on behalf of maidenhead/aquamantra.
How many kilograms of biohome ultimate can fit in a 400 please?
After watching your filter videos I have decided to follow your advice, however I need to keep my tank cycled... how do I move over to new foam and biohome while still keeping my tank cycled... is it a case of keeping my old media in with the biohome then gradually increase the biohome while reducing the old media over a period of time and if so over what sort of period would it take.
My question is how silent will it operate? I always wish you showed us how it works in the aquarium even that i know its "Pimp my filter" and nothing more. Maby an new type of video series where you show all this? Love your videos and keep em comming.

Hi Richard. I have this filter, came with a complete setup that I purchased 2nd hand. The tank is a 310ltr tank. The question is, is there any point is fully filling all the trays or should I just buy the 5kg option of biohome ultimate and split evenly across the 3 trays or another combination?
This filter with a bottom to top flow, and I would sacrifice one tray for ceramic rings or maybe even Eheim Mech Pro and this filter could run forever
How do you purge air out of this canister, it doesn't seem to have a vent on the top, turn it upside down to fill? or does it maybe function like a half wet half dry trickle tower, does it not need rubber seals on each of the baskets center tubes or would that be minimal leakage through there, maybe that loose tube pushes on the pump inlet so it sucks from the bottom past all the joints?
I've been wondering about these for a while but could never get any firm info exactly how much bio media I can pack into it , even Maidenhead didn't know so I had them take out the baskets so I could measure them. I just got my hands on two of them, secondhand, one filled with two baskets full of your media, literally for peanuts. I wish I'd gone for these instead of buying 3 Eheim 1200XL's lol. I can't believe how little power these use, not much more than the eheim. I've got a eheim 1034 (the first ever bucket from 1969. Where would be the best place to sell it? I put it on eBay but nobody has hardly heard of them. Looks identical to the 2260 but grey. Cheers

Fairly new to all this can anyone tell me can you over filter a tank to make the biological process inefficient ? I have a 70ltr tank and was looking at running a filter like a pond solutions 1000ef full of biohome with a pond solutions pre filter with sponges .Or is the bigger the filter you can run the better?...........thanks

I think it would have been at the high filter performance at least 2x coarse as a pre-filter. The Fein filter maybe in the second basket and a little less Biohome Ultimate.

Richard, are you familiar with the Ziss Bubble Bio Filter? It's an internal, moving bed filter that Aquarium Co op sells here in the US. In my opinion, it can't possibly work as a stand-alone filter because it only has a relatively small coarse sponge on the bottom (intake). I'm afraid if you tried to add more mechanical filtration, you'd impede the moving bed capability. If I were to purchase one, it would be as a secondary filter primarily for biological filtration and I'd replace the plastic media with Bio-Motion. I wondered if you had any thoughts on this, as I find myself debating the topic quite often. I have learned so much watching your videos, and I feel like the crowd that claims the Ziss can be a stand-alone filter haven't done their research. I'd appreciate any thoughts you have on the subject.
I don't think they're very good either Joey has a video showing that small bottle filter filled with k1 is useless compared to ceramic ring and the bubble bio filter is basically the same size as the bottle and the mechanical filtration is poor
I totally doubt that Ziess is a viable product as it's really a tiny amount if what is a very poor media and doubtful functionality.

It’s a good filter. I replace that plastic stuff with biomotion... you can fit in about 700g... enough for a 70 litre easy. I could probably cram in more media
Even with the plastic media. It’s going to be fine in a 20g.

James Glenn no no, I have this as a back up. But I would be happy with that at my only filtration.
Filtration can be split into 2.
Biological and mechanical.
The ziss can do biological very well, biohome or plastic. Biohome cycles in 3 weeks to 2 days..... plastic cycles in 6 months !!
The biomotion in my ziss should be fine, as I have a canister in my 30g, that should pick up loads of fine muck regardless
I have personally just run a coke bottle filter with biohome only (older tank before canister came in) and just a course sponge, in a 30g. Just like the ziss. No issues. Was perfect for keeping water clean. the media was also clean, the sponge I had was smaller then the zisss. It was just in the neck if the bottle.
I also ran a separate filter to polish water, that had no biological as I would wash the filters weekly, and personally speaking, mechanical isn’t needed so much, but fish dependant !!
I haven’t tried it, but I would also use plastic to handle biological..... if it’s good enough for pondguru and Cory aquarium coop. It’s good enough fo rme
And also... I have a 10g.... not much mechanical in one corner filter... I have a ton of moss which drapes over it. I use that over a filter with just biological. The moss settles the muck out. I rinse that out monthly
How long will the media last
What is the benefit overall of a filter achieving full cycle? Does it mean less water changes for example?
It means that is you miss a water change or two nothing is going to build up to the point of harming the fish.
However, it's still best to do a 10% change weekly while using a gravel cleaner to remove any uneaten food and fish waste. That keeps the water re-mineralised which is important for so many biological process.
If you leave the tank for months without a partial water change many of the trace elements get used up or locked into fish and plants and the water loses its 'vitality' and basically becomes dead while still testing perfectly for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

However as a quick summary nope. All filters in the efx range except the 600 go from the bottom to top.
This is the only one that goes from top to bottom

Hi Richard, I've been working my way through your videos and can now consider myself a more educated novice. However i cant see to figure out if a protein skimmer is needed with one of these canister filter, or indeed at all.
Any help would be appreciated as i'm looking at investing in a marine set up in the near.

Hi Richard I have bought your bio-home media for both of myfx6 and all ponds solutions ef2000 which are running brilliantly I have since setup a 225 lt tank running 2 all ponds solutions 2000 with basic ceramic rings I have just bought a Aquamanta efx600 but I just can’t afford bio-home at mo can I be really cheeky and ask if there is any way of getting some freebies of bio-home media to put in my Aquamanta efx600 filter I know I’m being really cheeky but as my old man says you never know until you ask

Great filter except for the fact that its seal and taking it apart is horrible. I have already broken the side clamps twice in both of these canister filters.
Press a piece off 2 inch square rubber pad etc onto the outlet to form a good seal while pumping the primer button,pops up every time, always lubricated O ring every service.

Hey Richard ! This just it … you not holding back and you name it when something is flawed you not holding back and say it. It is a stupid design on that handle and tray and middle pipe. Those who gets paid product testers only positive opinion that they will get paid for. You see you doing it by hobbyist view point and say it as is. Logically what makes sense and what is a bad design. I think nothing wrong to pinpoint flawed. Goes to show all filter have 1 function yet look it how many ways (how many filter types) they all doing it. Yes by functionality easy maintenance and easy excess and cleaning etc. and lasting and cost effective ! By listening to the money making manufacture or paid testers by the company you will never ever get the right one. So this is to show and demonstrate the 1 function what all filter designed for and how to make the best out of what ever you got from the store. So yes more design (not talking about volume cause it is endless) but what we need for what size and set up we have. This pimping series is good for from beginners to all above. We all have different filters all kinds for only 1 function yet here is best demonstrated and explained in layman's term and we can all understand it. More I see the more I phrase you Richard for what you doing ! Excellent job as always and TY !
