      Thanks, there hasn't been any progress since the Reddit post but where it's at right now is quite pretty :)

      Thank you! I definitely started with a couple of clumsy exercises but little by little I developed the skills to make something as complex as this mod.
      When I started this project I wasn't sure that I could produce the curves needed to be comfortable in the hand and honestly I surprised myself with how well it turned out!

      Thanks Darren, I did end up taking the rears off and am pretty deep into modelling them now. Doing front and rear will really tie everything together.
      Also each rear grip came off in three pieces! I was surprised how broadly they cracked

    Looks awesome mate. You could try the Ironing setting to make it nice and smooth.

      Ah yes thanks for reminding me, I keep forgetting that's an option! I've only used it once before and it worked well then

    This looks great! Love the pink. I’d highly encourage you to use surface modeling, I’ve used it for other grips I’ve designed(not for sim racing rig, other stuff) and it gives you a loooooot more freedom as to how the grip feels. I loved getting to learn surface modeling, and I really think it may help here

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Před 5 měsíci

      Is surface modelling like manipulating clay? Push and pull rather than extrude, is what I imagine. I would definitely like to expand my modelling skillset!

    • @williamsnapp2615
      @williamsnapp2615 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@DrAlanQuan yes it’s very similar to manipulating clay. The one tricky thing for me is when you’re in surface modeling mode in fusion it takes away the status as a solid part, and you have to resolve the geometry later, so standard commands will not work until that has been done.

    looks good! I would like to have a cheap option to buy an STL file I can print it myself. also maybe different sizes for larger hands. not sure I would buy them over Pineapple for a mid price, their quality is really high although slow to get your order.

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Před 5 měsíci

      Hi Tyler thanks for the feedback! Very fair perspective. I think different sized grips are actually pretty straightforward to implement.
      I've got the rear grips off and I'm presently working on my design there, but within a week or so I should have a working front+rear design!
      I figure I can always do a digital file release anywhere in the future, it's just once a digital file goes live on the internet there's no going back and the potential for it to get leaked and lose almost all value in an instant is high - and not only for myself, once a digital grip gets released that has potential to hurt Pineapple Grips too, but to a lesser extent since he's doing some pretty cool stuff that's super hard to replicate

  • @Reazy-

    Im the guy from reddit with the other fanatec grips. If you want I can send you the Step file if it could help you. We could kind lf help eachother out :) This seems really well engineered, congrats on that. Excited to see where this will go

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks that's really kind! Honestly I wouldn't know what to do with a step file, I've never exported or imported one in my life.
      I presently have the rear grip dismantled and working on my rear grip design!
      I'll be in touch if I hit a dead end :)

    This wheel actually was a pain to use after a while. Those ergonomics stink.
    I applied thick, quality handlebar tape with an extra extension layer to widen
    the lower arch, and increase the thickness of these grips. Now that they no
    longer resemble the shape of the original, this wheel feels great.

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Před 5 měsíci

      I used the wheel for years, it was all I had, I had no complaints.
      But now I've held a number of different wheels and the handles on this as standard are just way too skinny. Definitely looking forward to producing something larger for it, and hopefully don't need to resort to tape!

    the best mod you can do for your DD1 is the SRM base side emulator and then move to a better QR (NRG) zero play and super solid. I was gonna get an SC2 Pro as a upgrade but after this mod.. a lot of the shortcomings are resolved and the best part is no more need of the podium hub saving you an easy 200 bucks a wheel on the QR alone.

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Před 5 měsíci

      Hi there, I was very interested in that product since it released but ultimately it would render my Formula V2 unusable unless I convert it to USB and that in itself is more money out - but yes a very nice solution to consider!
      Do you have experience with the NRG branded quick release combined with the Simagic branded QRs?

    • @blacknovella
      @blacknovella Před 5 měsíci

      I actually did the conversion on my v2 wheel also to usb. and it works perfectly. i have the NRG branded actual real life 70mm pcd one on the base side and im using simagic ones on my wheels. they work flawlessly@@DrAlanQuan

    • @akpanjennings
      @akpanjennings Před 5 měsíci

      No need. Just get QR2 there is no flex. For 3rd party wheels just get the emulator QR2 from Leoxz; it’s the same size and appearance as a fanatec QR2 and about the same cost

      Hi Jedi... Um... Beasticles
      I'm still testing my design, I've gone through countless iterations and I have good blueprints to produce excellent fitting and functional front and rear grips - I'm now tweaking the comfort in hand, as of the most current version it's super comfortable everywhere except the tips of my pinkies - I want this to be perfect before I release it, but not long now!

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Not at all! My DD1 is set to under 6Nm 99.9% of the time.
      Considering the wheel came bundled with a 20Nm base I figured that was quite safe. I'm generally quite careful with my equipment, but stuff like this happens I guess

  • @agusv6661

    Hello, I had the same exact problem on my wheel, cracked on the same places and then was quite unestable. I wrote to fanatec and they send me new grips without charge and I changed them with the help of pinaple grips explanations

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Před 5 měsíci

      Glad they looked after you! I'm pretty happy with the path I'm going down - improving the rim with the stiffer handles than standard.
      How long was your wheel in service when you discovered the breakage?

      Where are you located?
      You can download the files and 3D print them yourself, but if you're local to me I may be able to print a set for you
      cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/fanatec-formula-grip-upgrade-complete-collection

    • @DrAlanQuan
      @DrAlanQuan  Před 2 měsíci

      For the price of my print plus postage, you could get yourself a nice kit from Pineapple Grips who is local to you.
      You could always use this as an opportunity to learn 3D printing though, and if you download my files you can print all sorts of different designs in different sizes and really nail down what you want your wheel to be.
      I find the process of building and installing the grips to be great fun, you might enjoy it too
