How to Replace Steering Rack 92-95 Honda Civic - Power to Manual Conversion Swap
Vložit
- čas přidán 3. 03. 2017
- A complete walk through on how to remove your power steering rack & pinion and all of the associated lines and parts for your 1992-1995 Honda Civic and install a manual unit as a replacement. I used a manual rack from a 1994 Civic DX Hatchback. This hatchback is a 1995 Civic Si.
The only 2 parts you will need if buying a brand new rack and installing on your power steering equipped Civic already are the manual bracket and the spacer which holds the rubber grommet in place up against the top of the rack. The power steering rack does not have this piece.

So glad I bought a dx😎 factory manual Windows, manual mirrors, no sunroof, no abs, no power steering, no bullshit
No BS, I like that!!
+Jon Widmer my dad has got a stupid clean 92 ex with power steering and electric Windows, still stick though, but he's about that stock life and daily driver that's comfortable
Daniel Bargas what I hate about my dx model is it came with no tachometer so now I have to install one#thatdxstocklife
Everything Soccer true and no center console, I just put in a lx gauge cluster still easier then changing your rack and converting your windows to manual
AC and PS were options for the CX and DX models. You can find some with no AC and PS, no PS and AC, both or none at all 👍🏼
for anyone wondering on manual handling, the dx I have now came with a manual rack. I was planning to swap to power since that's what I've always run but after 6 months I have to say aside from parking, I really enjoy the direct feeling you get from the manual rack at speed, it's very analog and predictable. I'll be staying manual!
srarcade badass, thanks for the feedback srarcade!! Hope this is helpful to others!
srarcade stop fucking saying manual. It's not called manual handling. So FUCKin sickening and cringe.
@@iv4vro381 damn....dude was angry 🤣
@@iv4vro381 So, "manual fondling" instead? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
parking will tone those arms! lol
Everyone I asked if they knew how to replace my rack or can do the job same answer all the time “the engine has to be pulled to get to the rack “ which meant $$$$ thanks a lot man I watched your video before when I was curious. I don’t know why I never watch it all !
That'd be crazy! Glad you got it sorted out!
Great video and commentary, I’ll be doing a complete front suspension rebuild on my 95 Del Sol and your videos have given great information on how to go about the job... looking forward for more of your upcoming videos.
+BobGzDelSol awesome!! Glad to have helped!
Even after 3 years great vid and info to learn from thank you
Great video man, i appreciate your time for doing it. I´ll be doing the same to my car and your video puts me at ease to tackle the project. Thank you
Youre welcome! I hadn't seen any good videos for this process so when the time came to perform it for a good friend, I couldn't resist! It was a nice learning experience!
You can also use a front sway bar bracket for a 90-93 accord as a rack mounting bracket. Happens to fit perfectly
Excellent info, thanks for the add!
Do you still have to round off the rubber on the manual rack with this bracket
21mm or 23mm
more info to questions below?
Yup exactly what I bought from energy suspension lol
Good video I just did this swap into my 95 ex coupe I watched this video before I did It lots of help thank you for the great useful information

Awesome dude. Very inspirational tutorial!! Good vibes
Appreciate that!!
Ive been wanting to do this! Awesome video man, helped out alot 👌👌

Helped me a lot bro!... I have a 94 civic coupe with a leaking steering rack.
Gonna do it myself soon!

Whats up dude, i want to thank you for your video. helped me a bunch when i did my rack and pinion. unfortunately i couldnt find the bracket for the manual rack and pinion so i stayed with the power steering. i just needed the car fixed quick. Seriously thanks for investing the time on the video
You got it, thanks for the comment!!
Still the best video I could find on this
90-93 accord front sway bar bracket works also
And on clarifying the steering b joint

do u have a link for this bracket?
thank you for this video. I needed this so much. I will be doing this Soon.
Sweet, glad to help!!
Thank you for this video 🙏
Boutta do this on my 95 dx and nobody on forums knows what they're talking about
Lol
Had a manual rack on my 93 EG dx (d13), With some honda access shocks and springs it was literally the best feeling little car ever. Real fun to drive, not heavy at all and easy to park too :)
so having manual is more fun than having power steering?
@@balloney2175 Absolutely!!
You can feel the road SO much better, the steering feels very analogue/manual (not sure how to better phrase it), and the car feels more "glued" in turns (probably from the additional feedback and being able to feel the effort being put into different turns). If a loss of traction is starting to occur you can feel it a lot better too, including when driving surfaces change.
Plus, a tiny bit less weight and one less thing for typically low-torque engines to turn.
People complain about parking but it really isn't a big deal in cars this light, I've never understood why people are opposed; the moment the car is rolling just 1-2mph it's easy to turn again, while feeling amazing at higher speeds.
@@hybrid.but.human.official All the while I am thinking of replacing my already 280,000 miles Honda Coupe 97 from manual to power steering.

Great video as usual!
I usually lock the steering wheel by using the seat belt. That way you don't damage the clock spring by accident after removing the steering column coupler.
That's awesome, never thought of that but smart as shit!!
I used energy suspension sway bar bushings for my manual rack in EK. They are slotted so they work perfect!
Energy suspension
Part # 9.5106G
3/4 stab bush
Thanks for that tip! 👍
Your welcome! I found it from another video and thought I'd share since I just did the manual swap in my ek
👍
I have never used the manual rack bushings nor have I ever had an issue with binding using them and never had to open any bolt holes what so ever what I did do was order the energy bushing kit obviously in urithane and cut the lip off the edges and used 3m windshield adhesive and bonded the original manual rack bushing to the urithane one and squished it together and let it dry for two days (one day is sufficient ) just to be on the safe side and had no issue with alignment
Thanks for the info/experience
hope you can help me. My 95 Civic has a bit more "play" in the wheel than I think it should be. Do you know how to adjust this? on the rack or on steering column? thank you in advanced.
Thanks for the help! Do you know where I can get the spacer for manual rack?
Jon, tomorrow I am picking up an ED6! Your great library of videos here has been a mega inspiration.
Do you have a video that digs into the front hub/knuckles situation for EFs? Seems like you cant buy hubs new anymore!
Awesome David, welcome to the family!! Check out this video, I completely rebuilt the front hubs/bearings/ball joints on the front knuckles for my wagon!
czcams.com/video/_V8sBGy0BAU/video.html
I've seen knuckles available from NAPA, they are pricey though.
Loved the video, but I can not find that extra boot adapter piece! What is it called?
good brother video; One question: later what happens with the speed sensor connections? thanks, sorry for the translator. Greetings from Peru
Thanks! You leave them alone. They were not touched when doing this swap.
I did this swap on my 96 ek coupe I pulled the power rack out and installed the manual rack and the u joint that connects the steering wheel to the rack was bigger on a power rack I had to hunt down and find a manual rack u joint. it was harder doing this than the swapping of the racks.. 1 guy on Ebay had a used u joint, he was in California and it cost me $90.00 !!! I had to buy it so I could get my car back together. I was so mad because the regular u joints for power steering are like $30-$40.. the dude knew what he had and I had to buy it lol
Lol.
U couldn’t find one at a local junk yard? I have a k swapped 95 civic with integra power rack. I have ps all hooked up but the steering feels really loose. I have all new bushings, Inner and outer tie rods, everything! I can’t figure out why it feels like that. I think I’m gonna go to manual steering because I want my hood to actually close properly and not have fat gaps and what not. If anybody can help me with some info I would very much appreciate it
Hey Jon, I see you are probably using the 5mil light blue gloves from Harbor Freight.
Try the 7mil. They last MUCH longer per use as they dont tear so easily. So worth it, try them!
I'll definitely try those next! Those suckers do rip pretty easy!
Awesome video. Was jw, once the rack is removed from the car, how do you know if the steering wheel is center before reinstalling the new rack?
You'll need to get a professional alignment once attempting this because it'll be off no matter what. You're better off trying to center it as much as possible just to help your alignment guy out and to not destroy the cable reel.
best trick i've learned actually is to remove both inner tie-rod to remove the rack and istall it ou have way more space that way
Absolutely! I like showing this just to know it's possible.
Hey jon i was wondering if you could do a video on a rear disc conversion for the ef civic si.
jessie M I'm planning on it! My friend and I should be picking up a set tomorrow night for his EF from a 1990 Integra. I hope to have those installed soon for him.
I was wondering where to get the spacer that sit between the rack and the rubber ?
I have 3 years will move to fidraulisko corner. You're doing the opposite. Strange! But thank you for the information in the opposite direction !!!!!
lol, nice!
Great video wanted to find out do you have to do anything with the electronics that you disconnect from the line does it cause you to have a check engine light do you have to jump them out somehow
Nothing at all.
Damn I'm gonna replace the rack when the motors out lol.
Definitely a lot easier.
This was a great opportunity video. Thanks for taking the trouble to make it. The original rack on my 94 lx is leaking a bit. Has 300k miles on it. Iwas thinking about going to manual since reputable manufacturers don't seem to make this rack anymore. It's all reman out there! I am thinking about using stop leak on it or getting a rebuild kit and put it all back together to buy some time while I plan the switch to the manual. Do you know if stop leak works? Does using a rebuild kit work?
It's just a band aid. If it's leaking then the seals are worn out. I don't know how long the stop leak would work or if it would even work at all but it's probably not very expensive to just try it out if you want to. *And a rebuild kit works*
I just bought a brand new rack for my car, and a conversion bracket to take it from power steering to non power steering. Yes, I spent nearly $100.00 extra, but at least I know it should be done right without having to cut anything.
Nice, will you add the link as a comment so other people may see it too?
@@GarageBuiltHondas Here is the link: onlinetsm.com/nrgtech-billet-power-to-manual-conversion-steering-rack-bracket/ It is an NRG part, and likely can be found else where for cheaper, but in this case I just used the first link that popped up for the part to actually buy it.
Carstuff111 so I’m planning to buy that bracket for my integra is there any bushing inside of the bracket that’s needed and if so what bushing eg civic or integra bushing etc

Please always lock the steering whelle in the middle when disconnecting the rack from the column or else you risk to damage the clockspring on your steering wheel(controls the airbag and horn).
That's a great tip!
grate video and explanations plus trick to get it out easier. hey man i have a ? my civic when i pres the clutch make a little noise when i let up it goes away i think is the throw out bearing am i corret
Possibly the input shaft bearing inside the transmission. Those tend to make a lot of noise as most of these transmissions are old. Ever change the clutch?
Ok thanks. btw is the manual better than the power rack
Not on this model, the Si has a better ratio from lock to lock, but not really a big deal on a daily driven car. So may argue otherwise but the ratio is still fine.
Hey man! Hopefully you read this because I am curious. Can I do this to my 1990 Civic Hatch. I've got the wonderful D15b2 and an automatic if it makes a difference. I hate power steering. I am assuming yes as long as I find that spacer and the manual bracket correct? Keep up the good videos my friend. They help a lot :) Let me know!
Yes. You only need a manual rack from any other Civic/crx and then a bigger spacer for the rack bushing.
great video, but what year model manual rack did you get it from and what year model eg did you install it on
need info on this
Great video, I just had one question.what exactly did you need to install this on the drivers side? Just that plastic spacer?
It bolted up directly. The spacer is part of the manual setup and is needed to help keep moisture out.
Thank God my ED6 is manual steering from factory, still have to take out the ac
Good stuff! You should work on a DA integra. It does look a lot cleaner with out PS.
Francisco Torres I used to have one that I miss. It's the only car I ever regret selling.
Jon Widmer 👍🏻 I sold mine and a year later bought it back from the same guy.I have a small walk around clip of it on my channel check it out!
Looks real good, I like it!!
Ej/dc racks are much more difficult than ed's :( the 5th gen civic racks mount vertically, and the 4th gens get mount horizontal upside down and they basically fall right out then easily slides right out. Only upside to the ej/dc it seems more of a solid design a bit more beafy
👍🏻
I have a 96 Integra (manual trans) could this be done? And what is needed..cool video..🌟
I'm not 100% sure. Did they make a 94-01 Integra that had non power steering? If so, then you'll need that rack and pinion for your car.
Where do I buy the spacer? For the steering colum?
It’s a long shot that it’s the same as here, or that you’ll see this, but my 2000 civic has a bad power steering rack, and I’m considering going manual to clean up my bay (plus slight workout at low speeds lol) and I’m wondering if it should be the same, or if the “eg” is going to be totally different.
You'll need a manual rack and subframe from any 96-00 Civic. I believe only the CX (hatchback) came this way?
Garage Built Hondas that’s too bad, guess I’m just going to replace mine with another power rack. If I was to depower the rack I can still remove the pump and a bunch of lines for a cleaner engine bay correct?
Yes, you can loop it also. I've heard, but never done one.
Question. I heard the EF wagons have a quicker steering ratio than say a hatch. But, the wagons have power steering. What could someone do, if they wanted to swap in a wagon steering rack, but keep it non-power steering? Are the insides of the racks swappable? Or is it safe to run a powered rack as non powered (either loop or cap the line ports on the rack?).
Swap all the parts over.
No.
Supposedly it is.
I went to the junk yard to get a manual bracket for a civic 93. Ended up getting a 97 civic del sol non manual bracket. It looks smaller than my civic's bracket, I think its going to fit. I will seen next week to see if it will fit.
Keepe updated, would love to hear if it works!
Unfortunately, it did not fit even though it is smaller than mine, it still needs to be much smaller.
Darn
Im starting to think mines is not even OEM lol. My bracket needs to be 1 inch and 1/4. Is yours that size? Im going to find out.
I don't know man. This was on a friend's car. I haven't seen him in a little bit. If I do I'll try to check it out.
I've got a 92 cx hatch witch already had a manual rack, but the turn radius isn't as tight as I'd like it to be. Is there a manual quick ratio rack available for my eg?
Possibly. I'd google it and see what comes up.
Mostly 1994 honda civic dx will have power steering right? but why will have a manual steering rack?
I even cant find any clue
But I got a RHD manual steering rack front eg
Do you guys know which model or spec of the car will have a manual steering rack for eg? If its for RHD will be the best
I have no idea being that we don't have RHD suppliers here. I'd look around online, keep searching. That's you best option.
a old trick is to pull out all the power steering parts and put a line from in and out and fill it with fluid but this would save some weight for sure doing a whole rack but good vid even if your just changing racks
Yes, the looping of the fluid lines. I've seen it and even some with a breather setup too. I was paid to do the work and this is what he wanted. I would've probably done the same if it was my car also.
yea make the customer happy is key but i bet the manual one is lighter aswell did u get a chance to compare weight?
bang bang I didn't compare, but you could tell, my guess would be 6-8 lbs lighter.
At 22:15 where do I find that spacer? Closest u-pull is 20miles from me, anywhere I can just order it?
Check hondapartsunlimited.com
Can someone tell me how to loop the fluid lines within the reservoir? My power steering stopped working and I don't want to fix it. But, I need to loop the fluid lines so the rack stays lubricated. I don't have the skills to loop the lines at the rack. Thanks.
Good question. I've never seen it routed up there, only at the rack. Google some info online, you may see some old posts about it
did you get that spacer off of the power rack? I just got a manual rack from the junk yard, and it looks like i have everything I need except the spacer that goes on the pinion. I don't want to start the job until I have the spacer or know i can pull it off the power rack. Thanks
The spacer was from the manual rack. The power rack doesnt have it if I remember the video correctly.
HELP!!! can you remove the steering rack without moving exhaust manifold? i recently got a new exhaust and its welded is their any way if i fought hard enough that i could bypass the exaust issue?
Maybe, but seems unlikely. You'll probably need to remove the header/manifold and lower it all together as one piece.
does it make noise like a ripped cvboot does? mines just ripped not sure to replace it or just fix the boot
Replace the axle and save yourself the headache.
how does the manual steering rack bind when using the power steering bracket? Aren't all the moving parts contained within the body/tube besides the inner tie rods?
The angle at which the rack is held to the subframe will be different and throw the geometry of slightly, therefore it can wear out/cause binding in a short amount of time. I read on a few forums of this happening to more than one person. Seemed to be a common issue.
@@GarageBuiltHondas Im going to find out for myself. Ive already installed mine before I saw this video. If it wears out, Ill try it this way I guess.
Let me know how it works out, hopefully no issues!
@@GarageBuiltHondas What forums did you learn about the binding from? I never came across that in my research.
When I was approached with this job I did some research and came across a thread on hondatech. This car hadn't had any issues at all and it's driven at the track every year. You can try it otherwise, but we've had excellent results with how I set it up.
What size are the long bolts
What would be the reason to do this conversion, I've always been curious. Great video btw
Not really an upgrade in terms of the steering ratio, but cleanliness of the engine bay and not having any power steering fluid leaking making a mess.
Jon Widmer does the manual 94-01 integra rack have a better ratio and does it fit?
Is the process similar on an ek? I have a 96 civic I have been wanting to this on.
Yes, identical. Maybe a few different spots for the bolts but all the lines and accessories will be very similar.
i heard inserting the power steering bushing over top the manual one eliminates that problem and where did u get ur spacer from I'm getting ready to install mine now
Doing that would still leave the rack at a slight angle on the passenger side because of the extra bushing. I wouldn't do that to my car, you may create the binding issues and then when you align it, it might still pull in one way more than the other because of the incorrect angle. Which spacer?
How did it work out putting the bushing on top
What's the line with the 14mm nut (the 3rd one on the right)? Is that the high pressure line coming from the pump? The line in my del Sol is leaking. Is it hard to replace just that line?
I don't recall which is high pressure but it's not too difficult to replace.
@@GarageBuiltHondas Thanks!
You reckon it is similar on a 1997 Honda del sol si? My ps rack is bad and I would much rather have a manual steering rack
Yes, might be exactly the same. I doubt there is much difference but would look around online and cross reference parts #'s with the EG's and Del Sol.
Holy fuck those brackets are expensive. The accord sway bar brackets have been mostly discontinued too so they're nearly as much if you can't find at a junk yard
You said in the video that some people were having issues with the output shaft on the rack being too small and that's the issue I'm having now, do you have any input on what I could do to make it work?
Billy, I cannot recall, but are you talking about the u-joint which joins the column to the rack?
Yes. The part of the u joint that connects to the rack and pinion is to big for the out put shaft. so when its completely installed the rack wont turn with the wheel.
You'll need a manual u-joint then.
Mantapppppp!!!!!

Jon Widmer does the manual 94-01 integra rack have a better ratio and does it fit?
luvyourmomspie not sure. The ratio may be better from the Integra though. You might be able to swap the entire rear subframe but I'm not sure. I've seen some info online but didn't pay too much attention as I wasn't doing any of those rack swaps before.

Hey this is unrelated but how much time do you estimate it would take to drop a transmission from a 95 rs integra automatic and replace a 94 integra
Aaron o.o Depends, is it your first time? For someone with experience, maybe complete the whole job in 6-7 hours. If it's your first time, might take a few hours more. I can usually drop a transmission in about 1.5 hours now, give or take 30 mins.
Question! Did the spacer that goes on top of the rack come off the power one?
No. Everything was from the parts car.
Where’d you get the adapter? And did you have to do anything to the Ujoint?
All the parts were from the parts car. No

Check the fuse under the steering column on the fuse box. That fuse might be blown.
Same thing happened to my 90, Never did figure it out.
Maybe the ground wire from the headlight wiring to the ground plug, if you follow it, all of the wires for the lights go to the same ground in the engine bay. If that wire is broken then the headlight will never work.

i'm kind of confused on this. if you switch from power steering to manual rack, where do you connect the leftover steering hose lines to? I don't quite understand how my Honda Civic DX (manual rack) is connected with steering fluid? Is there such thing as a manual rack gearbox?
Jay M there are no lines for a manual steering rack. There is no gearbox either but there is an adjustment nut in the bottom.
+Garage Built Hondas thanks. 1 more question: there's a steering fluid reservoir. where does that lead/connect to?
Jay M so you have a power steering rack, correct?
