  • Bloodhound is a large scent-hound, originally bred for hunting deer, wild boar, and, since the Middle Ages, for tracking people. Believed to be descended from hounds once kept at the Abbey of Saint-Hubert, Belgium, it is known to French speakers as le chien de Saint-Hubert.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Bloodhound that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Hound Dogs
    Weight: 80 to 110 pounds
Height: 23 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder
    Life Expectancy: 11-15 years
The Bloodhound belongs to a group of dogs that hunt together by scent, known as Sagaces, from the Latin, which is the same root as the word "sagacious," referring to the qualities of keen discernment and sound judgment. Those words are certainly descriptive of the Bloodhound's powers of scent.
This wrinkled hound is gentle and affectionate, but he's far from lazy. He can follow a scent trail for miles and will always prefer that to sleeping on the sun porch. Expect to commit to long walks every day if you live with a Bloodhound.
Originally used in medieval Europe to trail boar and deer, modern-day Bloodhounds have found careers as mantrailers for police departments and search and rescue organizations. So skillful are they that their "testimony" is considered admissible in a court of law. He can be a family dog, too, but he requires a high level of care.
It's not everyone who can live with a large dog who slings slobber, exudes a distinctive houndy odor, wants nothing more than to follow his nose, wreaks destruction in puppyhood, has endless energy and endurance, and is the definition of the word stubborn. If you can, you'll find the Bloodhound to be kind, sensitive, and tolerant of children and other animals. With the right family, he's a dog of great character who brings much joy and laughter.

I'm 75!. Our first Bloodhound, "Brutus", ( The Hermiage Hammurabi), became a Champion @ an early age & went to Westminister @ about 1974 or 5?. He came in 4th out of seven in his class.I've owned Fourteen dogs, four Bloodhounds, & they are w/o a doubt my favorite Breed! They react to Kindness & Gentleness as that is their demeanor! Love them, cherish them, THEY ARE SPECIAL! We recently rescued "ANNIE" from a Canine Concentration Camp in East Texas. Her storey would bring tears to Adolf Hitler's Eyes! She has pulled or knocked me down several times! She HATES other dogs & people with Ski Poles( I'm sure she was beaten!), but I'll NOT give up on her!!! She has that intrinsic goodness of the Bloodhounds in her soul, & we will be partners forever!

i know this is late but bloodhounds definitely respond best to positive reinforcement. when it comes to unwanted behaviors, it’s best to reward them for not doing the unwanted and stuff and introduce what you do want them to do and reward them for it as well, that way they’ll adopt the new behaviors

This is Gunny, pictured here. He's a Bloodhound and Black Lab mix. He was born with three brothers and four sisters; all solid black with a white patch on their chest. This character came out tiger striped brindle, however, with a white wishbone on his chest. He's grown up to be a monsterous 150 lb. Goofball and steals the hearts of everyone he meets. He's never been penned or leash trained but stays by my side always. I cannot state enough how loving, loyal and smartaleck these dogs are. Every day is a game of who can outsmart who and he usually wins. One other thing is that these guys are very tenderhearted and must never be scolded. With a face like that, I can't imagine why anyone would.

Oh my gosh, my hubby and I just adopted a rescue puppy 1 month ago. He has a brindle coat too, with a white fur wishbone on his chest, too, a dark face, droopy ears, and HUGE webbed feet. Our vet thinks this puppy, now weighing over 40 pounds, will grow to 125 pounds. This dog has a noise and scents like a blood hound. The rescue said he was "Labrador Mix" including they believe, Hound. 😉

@@marinegunny826 our puppy and I started the local SPCA's new puppy training, once per week for one hour. It is wonderful! Our puppy is SO smart. He is also extremely loving. He loves all people, including children, even small ones, such as 1 and 2-year olds. He is happy to let them pet him and he licks them and often, lies down next to them. Our puppy loves people of every age, other dogs, and is very easy to leash train. He is a very even- keeled puppy. I do walk him a lot - at least 2.5 miles every morning and 2.5 every afternoon or early evening. I also am working with him throughout each day on training exercises. Very interestingly, each time we meet a nice new dog who our dog plays with, our puppy always remembers the house where the other dog lives after just one time, and our puppy tries to lead me to the other dog's house, or if we are walking by in the same street as the othet house again, tries to get me to stop there. Our puppy will lead me there! This is the same for houses that are miles apart where there are dogs our puppy had enjoyed playing with before. It's an extraordinary thing, his memory and sensitive nose.

Thank you! If they get good direction and almost constant attention as pups they can be pretty good on a leash. We go out and find antlers and it’s rewarding for us both!

A couple of things you might want to know about St. Huberts hounds. Kept as inside dogs, unlike any other breed I have every known, they will not crap anywhere near your home . They establish their own little graveyard as far from your house as possible and do their business there. No need to watch where you are walking in the back yard as long as you respect their sacred land. Secondly, the slobber that they sling onto your walls is mostly an indication of an ear problem. They get an itchy ear because of a fungus, the only way they have to scratch it is to fling their head back and forth, thereby slinging slobber in all direction. Keep their ears clean and fungus free, and the slobber slinging will be minimal. A strange and hard to believe fact that I have noticed over the last 30 years of bloodhound ownership is that when a deed tick gets on my dog, it will always travel to her forehead, and come to the surface of her head where, if you are looking will be easy to spot, remove and kill. After a walk, look at her head about every three minutes for about a half an hour, and you can kill every deer tick on you Bloodhound. Strange but true.

Ralph is 6 1/2. He is a large barrel of fun. -But- The allergies are really challenging. Allergy testing has revealed that he is essentially allergic to everything, including humans. We battle allergy issues all year long with allergy shots and other maintenance, but the spring, right now, care is especially intense. Daily ear cleaning, hourly eye wipes. Despite all this, Ralph is his usual happy self which is wonderful; I would be miserable. He's a hero. I can't think of a more personable dog I've ever owned. He is also one of the best non-verbal communicators I've ever owned. He may not be able to talk, but he can argue! Lol

Bloodhound is 1 of my favourite dog breeds I would absolutely love to have 1 but I already have a nearly 9 year old mastiff Bella who had all the same traits u just described lol, she would eat anything even if it wasn't edible she ate it, thankfully she never had to have any ops tho, but she didn't stop chewing till she was around 4, I also have a nearly 3 year old chihuahua called nala, she don't have any of the chihuahua traits, she hardly barks she's so friendly when we take a walk she has to run over to say hi to everyone we see along the way lol, she's great with other dogs to but what she loves most is playing with kids, especially my sisters coz they absolutely spoil her rotten lol, I wish I could have a Bloodhound they are my dream dog, I used to have a alaskan malamute they are my other favourite breed, nanook had to be put to sleep just before he was 13 years old a few years ago now nala was actually born the day i lost him so i saw that as a sign, I've had 1 of my dream dogs and really want the other 1 day

She has been really awesome with people but with other dogs very territorial. She gets down low, howls and barks VERY big loud arks. It’s improved a lot but we are hoping to wean her of the habit completely. Also we live in an apartment but she does not howl or bark at neighbors often and has responded really well to all trainings. Any ideas on how to help her be more chill with dogs? I’d love to be able to bring her to the dog park etc. Also any idea if bloodhounds have a job at farms? Protecting chickens ? LOL thanks. We love our bloodhound.

You are correct. Bloodhounds cannot run 45mph. That is the top speed of a greyhound. Bloodhounds max out at 20mph.

Bloodhounds definitely can't run 45 mph!
    That's the greyhound
Bloodhound tops out at like 25-28
They are known for ability to keep up a steady jog for ridiculously long distances
    Not sprinting
They can go longer than any handler at walking pace but they definitely can't run 45 mph

    • @ifoundasquirrelwildliferescue
      @ifoundasquirrelwildliferescue Před rokem

And considering only one dog can reach that speed running 45mph definitely isn't a requirement of hound varieties...
Only one breed reaches that and it is literally their top speed of best runner...

blood hounds were used in the slaveholding southern states to terrorize enslaved and non-enslaved black Americans. They were bred explicitly for that purpose. So, no. the claims made about the breed being vicious were absolutely warranted. They were trained to hunt and maim black people. As society rejected that kind of brutality and enslavement of black people... bloodhounds became a natural enemy. Again, this just makes sense.

@@valley2thebay319 ... can't imagine you don't understand this, but let's pretend. I'm clearly responding to the comment that was made in the video about the bloodhound's reputation. AGAIN, The dogs were trained to track and permanently disfigure or scar people that wanted to escape slavery or were just in the wrong place. Obviously the breed has not been used for that purpose in a century, however this is why the breed has a poor or at least not good reputation in our culture. Our cultural memory is longer than the lifetime of any human so the negativity associated with bloodhounds comes from that time.
