Lol tell me about it. I saw a lot of late 2000s anime and game characters, since they were probably all made during the height of Mugen's popularity. Old gundam, Umineko, Magika Madoka, Ytp Mario, the giant orange cat from Azumanga Diaoh, the OVA Jojo, and other memes were all really popular around that time.

I would love to have a real mugen tournament with balanced characters, something like, you present yourself with your character, it gets tested and you can enter the tournament...
That would be really dope to be honest...similarly to how every individual copy of mugen is personalized, every local will have their own personalized version of mugen that gets slowly updated by the comunity with characters they want in that aren't overly broken/cheap!

The flock of falling father figures is one of the best things I've ever seen. From the amazing name, to the reference, to the mechanics, it's just hilarious and absolutely perfect.

The excitement and comradery during the tourney is something I miss seeing. I feel like you don't see stuff like this anymore because tourneys/speedrunning events are so commercialized now.
I was just thinking the same thing. Most tournaments now are broadcast around the world and have a ton of standards and they try to be sterile. I miss seeing a bunch of people get together for some good ole speedrunning races, but now they're all sponsored and they all have a big in-person crowd that has to be entertained. It's like everything is an extension of Twitch chat now
It's a consequence of getting bigger, I guess.
I just wish this didn't have to die.
Even if there was something like a "fun only speedrun event" it'd become directly controversial to go there because they don't have an HR/PR department to constantly hassle them over pronouns and microaggressions. Then participants wouldn't be allowed at AGDQ/SGDQ.

That interlude about saya no uta let me down a very deep rabbit hole... but at least I finally found something that like...terrified me for once in my life.
Like... I was one of those weird kids that watched cartel executions because I liked talking about it with people (I think im making this sound way more common then it actually is) so like...gore horror is just something that I find interesting and not really scary. But for some reason, saya no uta did it. For some reason when I just saw some of the stuff in saya no uta it actually terrified me. Extremly weird feeling, imagine being a young adult that never really had that feeling before and for some reason this random ass game gave me that feeling even if it was just for like 10-15 minutes while doing some research on it.
SAME MAN, it's one of those games that are stuck in your head from the first sight, I eventually read it for some cool gore and mystery, only to end up disturbed for weeks by one of the few good lovecraftian horror stories I've ever experienced.
there's this one masterfully-executed bit where, like
the MC goes and checks on Saya, and the progress on their attempt to paint the house in colors that don't look like meat to him, and he goes out for an errand
and then his best friend comes to check on him, and finds the door unlocked
and she sees that the entire house is covered in rotting meat
and then she looks _up,_ and she starts _screaming_ as some *_THING_* descends upon her
and then when the MC gets back he finds Saya sitting in the hallway munching on something, and he's like "oh, that looks delicious, can I try some?"
