What a priceless piece of history. Thank you so very much for sharing this.
I think what she is trying to communicate is "Hey is this all you silly humans think I'm worth...I'll show YOU!"....and she has.... Thank God Dottie Shirreffs and her son recognized how special she is. God only knows how much I love her! This is a must-see for all her loyal adoring fans.

As I see it, Ruffian was the previous queen of racing, with Zenyatta being the current reining queen. Once a queen, always a queen, but like every hierarchy the torch gets passed down. Eventually there will be a new queen of racing added, but it doesn't take away the titles from the previous queens.

He said something to the effect that it was like a light bulb going off over her head, and from then on she had positive associations with the crowd giving her attention. She used to get very bothered and upset before her races but now channels that energy into her pre-race flirtation with the crowd. :)

What a gorgeous horse and what tremendous races she gave us I had no idea she sold for $60,000 cash at the auction untill i saw this video and for her to be sold for $60,000 at the auction was a steal. because the last I remember she earned over $2,700,000.00 Plus on the race track. I know she made her owners proud. I believe she was undefeated her 1st 19 races straight in a row. and the first race that she lost she lost it by a nose or a head and she won the Breeders cup classic in 2009 and the ladies breeders cup classic in 2008 as well on top of that she was the only filly to accomplish and win the Breeders cup classic she was in a league of her own all by herself !!!!!!! WHAT A REMARKABLE STORY AND HISTORY AND LEGACY!!! I hope that will encourage other horse owners and trainers to look and buy these horses that go for a cheaper price we would have never known her capabilities if she would have never been bought and given a chance to prove herself , And the greatness she had in-store fir us her FAN'S!! she is a true champion and up there in the ranks with Secretariat and American pharoah she is most definitely in the top three best horses ever to step on a race track in horse racing history she will forever be the queen that ever stepped onto the race track thank you Zenyatta for all of the races that you gave us and your wonderful career you are the best and may you enjoy your retirement to the upmost!! AND MAY YOU ENJOY AND LIVE A LONG AND HEALTHY LIFE!!!!! AND A VERY HAPPY RETIREMENT THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!! It is so sad to watch the races now day's and you not be part of them any longer but I enjoyed every single one of your races and I won a lot of money off of your races through out your career and that's why I made a $110,369.69 donation in your name and this was 3 years ago!! Because of your greatness and competitiveness and you're winning streak you allowed me to actually win over $1,000,000.00 throughout your career and your races and yes I paid my taxes for those that are wondering it was all legal and I had some side bets with trainers and other horse owners but yes I made and won a million dollars plus total. a little bit over $1,000,000.00 it was $1,010,369.69 to be exact and that's why I donated $110,369.69 in your name Zenyatta!! You will always be our Queen and no other Filly or Mare will come near your achievements and Records that you put in place in your legacy throughout your racing career!! Because you were always on🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 and you are always very happy the way that you PRANCED and danced and showed off before each race what's remarkable you knew that all eyes where are you and you always stole the show and you love the attention that you always receive from your fans and you accepted our cheers and applauses and you knew we were cheering and Applause Ian for you and happy in our hands for you and you let us know that you knew that by prancing and dancing and being a big and flirty Philly!!

She was still about 3 months away from having the Bernardini foal at the time. What physical specimen this mare is to see up close and personal. Looked like she could've saddled up that day and went out and won the Hollywood Gold Cup or Pacific Classic. As big as any colt or gelding. The tour manager told me that day she dwarfs most of their stallions.

Both of Zenyatta's colts are descendants of Secretariat. One of Secretariat's most important descendants, AP Indy, is the son of Seattle Slew and Secretariat's daughter Weekend Surprise. The sire of Zenyatta's 2012 colt is Bernardini, who is the son of AP Indy and thus Secretariat's great grandson. Her 2013 colt is sired by Tapit, who is a grandson of AP Indy and thus the great-great grandson of Secretariat.

@pitzforlife74, the sale took place at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. The Keeneland complex includes a beautiful racetrack, the usual backside facilities, and a sales facility. The sale occurred in September 2005. The September sale is one of the most important sales of yearlings in the world. It attracts some of the best-bred stock and some of the richest bidders. Curlin and Rags to Riches were also sold at the 2005 Keeneland sale. Curlin was a $55K bargain.

  • @LauraJdogmom
    @LauraJdogmom Před 13 lety +2

@lilchi721 No, that's not true. Lane's End is a commercial boarding facility. Yes, they own mares, but Zenyatta is not one of them. The Mosses are still her owners; they pay Lane's End big bucks to take care of her. This is common practice in the Thoroughbred industry. The Mosses own Zenyatta, so therefore they own her foal.

@rgarric2000 Zenyatta is a BIG filly/mare. Often is takes the larger ones more time to grow into their frame and for their muscles to catch up. Zenyatta's owners and trainers did the right thing by the filly by waiting and allowing her to mature. We'd have sounder horses and less traumatic injuries were all horses allowed to mature until 2-years before training to race at 3 and holding major stakes for 4-year-old and up only.

I agree, a steal. But the greatest deal of all, IMHO, was Seattle Slew for $17,500. Although it was 1975, adjusted for inflation it comes out to about the same as Zenyatta. But Seattle Slew became only the 10th horse to win the triple crown, and since he was a male, was syndicated for $14 million in 1979 (later siring A.P. Indy), which would be about $50 million in today's dollars!

She didn't race until age 4 because she had owners and a trainer who knew what was best for her, letting her grow up some before asking her to run.

@barboro1 I highly doubt the Mosses would ever consider selling her.

@TicinoParadise Yes, he was. When I mentioned Curlin, I meant horses sold at this particular sale. Skip Away was a great horse. Did you know that he is going to be reburied at Old Friends? They are starting a cemetery for Hall of Fame horses. He will rest beside another great, *Noor.. Seattle Slew was another bargain at $17,500. Of current horses, IIRC, Blind Luck was an $8000 yearling. I love it when "cheap" horses make good.

We mere mortals flinch at not spending 60,000 for her and I understand that considering her record! Lordy it's a different world when you're a billionaire....the horses we could buy would be amazing for breeding purposes. She was so impressive to me, wish I could have seen this. I can only watch Keeneland from home but I still enjoy it.

@WhiteCamry , yup...but she may not have had the appropiate handling as the Moss' and Sherriffs. :)

I wish she wasn't retiring. John Henry won Horse of the Year when he was 9. I just feel Z can show us more if she's given the chance.

She achieved greatness because the right people bought her: Trainer John Sheriffs didn't push her too early, let her grow up some and develop, then let her show what she had.

Where did you find this? It's so amazing to see footage of the Queen when she was a Princess. She was an absolutely beautiful yearling. I wonder if the people who decided not to outbid the Mosses are regretting that decision now.

It seems like all the best horses only sell for a few grand, The horse who just won the $1,500,000 Hambletonian, Market Share, was a $16,000 yearling.
