This is one of my favorite songs by Don, great job! There's a reason he's in the song writers Hall Of Fame. Isn't it wonderful each person can get different messages from the same song. I get the feeling that he's tired of trying to chase the riches of wealth and he's bowing out; he can't live in the life of wealth and privilege's those striving for the castle leads him to despair he wants the simpler country life. That's what I love about music how it can hit each person differently!!

Yes it was. But he slowed down the arrangement and turned it into a much better song. Don McLean's also on the short list of artists who've actually covered themselves.
This is simply another of his spine-tingling compositions that leave me craving for more. "Vincent" is my absolute favorite Don McLean tune. But, this comes in a close second. Nice analysis, Miss Dani.

What a way to start 2022! Don's original version of this song in his Tapestry album is more upbeat and has a completely different feel to it. And yes, you got it right that he is always seeking a sort of fantasy and romance in life. All of his lesser known songs in his early albums, Tapestry, Don McLean and American Pie are masterful pieces of song-writing (he writes and arranges all his early songs) and singing. So more McLean reactions please😃 Happy New Year, Dani!

I just subscribed to your channel. Don McLean has been a favorite of mine for many years. One song n particular, ''Empty Chairs'', is a sad but beautiful song & I indulged my sadness by listening to it incessantly after the failure of my marriage. Now, years later, I can listen to it for the appreciation of the heartfelt lyrics & lovely melody, without the bittersweet memories.
jUst stumbled on this and I loved your insight into his "everlasting pain." This and "Vincent" are my favorites of his.

The castles in the air he refers to must be skyscrapers. The song seems to clearly be about getting out of the city. That was a far stronger yearning back in the hippie era.
The implied woman of the song turns out to be the city.

Hi Dani! Happy New Year! I woke up this morning and you were the first thing that I watched on the internet. I was thrilled to see your reaction to Don McLean‘s Castles in the Air. That’s when I hit the subscribe button. I enjoyed what you said about it. The lyrics are beautiful and smart, which I find with so many of Don McLean‘s originals. I wish I could find more reactions to his songs. Can you please react to Empty Chairs? There are so many of his songs that I think you would really enjoy. His 1970 debut album, Tapestry, has so many good songs with interesting lyrics. He also sang other peoples songs. He had a big hit with Roy Orbison’s Crying. It’s a 3 1/2 octave song and really showed off his vocal range. Try to find the live version for that one. It’s just great to watch him perform. Keep doing what you’re doing and have fun doing it! This is a great song and he has a soft and soothing voice and can execute a vibrato on a descending note which I seldom ever hear. I thing Billy Boyd did a touch of it in his Hobbit anthem "The Last Goodbye" a great song with a great video, a must for music fans or Tolkein fans. Loveyoubunches

Happy New Year Dani. I been doing alot if things lately so I haven't been on CZcams. I never got to wish you a Merry Christmas. I missed some holidays. Love me some Don McLean. I'm only familiar with only his song American Pie and maybe one more. There's a performance of American Pie love ve on BBC I think and his performance is one of the most amazing things I ever saw. A song of his you should react to which I don't believe anyone else has requested is Dreidel. It's one of his songs that goes under the radar. Most people think American Pie, Vincent, Crying and Empty Chairs, but Dreidel was always one of my favourites of his.

Always loved this version! Don McLean has been a favorite of mine for a long, long time. Loved hearing your views of this very much. You should check out Tom Rush's "No Regrets" on his Circle Game LP. Several covers of Joni Mitchell songs also wonderfully done .

Yes hello it's me again hey there yep everybody knows American Pie thank is from 72 I think was the number one song Back Then depends on what paper you're looking at but anyhow I don't think I've heard this song before but it sounds okay I think it can grow on me and Don Mclain he was good so I like the video I guess I'll have the hair too few times to get it into my system other than that I'm Christmas day thing at 1 whatever happened and it's Den dealt with I guess you'll be here a lot of crying just have to get that baby bottle out and everybody has to take Karen to go for a ride but some to Sleepy Hollow it all works congratulations on that again and it's nice that has the album slept like you have an Elvis so that could be assigned who knows good anyhow it's 6:39 I just stumbled upon your video cuz my ringer doesn't go off so I'll let you go and have a great night say hi to your family Carl Supertramp Garnett God bless you stay safe
There are two different versions of Don McClean's song here. He redid it for a single release several years later, but the original was on his first album before the American Pie Album. the album was called Tapestry and re-released after American Pie to cash in on American Pie fame. the original version is a lot faster and in a different key. czcams.com/video/RVvq_f83g3M/video.html

This doesn't sound like the original recording.. I wish they would leave the originals alone. This has been redone with Autotune....I am so glad I have my originals from my era. These autotuned remastered crap removes the vibrato in the singers voice. and then becomes just computer generated. just awful.
Autotuned remastered and cuts out the guitar and his vibrato in his voice....
