- Initially I didn’t rlly like Mickbell cuz of his moral dubiousness but honestly I find his pettiness kinda funny so he’s growing on me.

Mickbell is basically a morally dubious, but naive teenager while Chilchuck is a grouchy, shrewd middle aged-man that has become bitter due to his poor choices in the past and the resulting rumors that hang over him.
He may look and behave like he'd kick you off a cliff to save his one life, but deep down he cares.
The problem is, he’s not a teenager, but like a grownup 30s man if he’s a tallman.
Mickbell isn't a teenager either. She's probably in mid 20s if she's a human. She's more shrewd and willing to do illegal things to get things for free.

i mean think about meeting chilchuck while youre a half foot in this situation though. to most non-half foots, he's just a little guy, but amongst half foots he's like a 6'5 beanpole in his 40s always insisting on contracts and being paid in advance for his work, plus he's a sociopolitically significant union man. he's gotta be intimidating as hell amongst them

Nah. It's true that their relationship isn't completely healthy and equal. Mick has abandoned issues and is afraid Kuro might leave him if he becomes too self reliant, and he seems to only pay him with or very small wages. But he really did save him from a slaver when they met and never expected him to follow or anything else in return. And part of the reason why he is being so stingy is because he's saving up to buy a house in the town's best district for the two of them.
EDIT: Now compare that to Izutsumi, who was only property for most of her life (Even during her time with Shuro's family), until she joined up with the main characters.

Because Union's aren't good for a freelancer. They take up authority positions in the market and enforce their existence. So say you want to get work for yourself at cheaper rates or try establish your own union since you don't like current one. The old union will force you out or punish you for trying to get into their market space. Unions don't = Good for workers either. Sucking up portion of wages to go back to sustaining union making less profit.
Which is what Mickbell and other Halflings think Chicchuck was doing. Making sure he get a portion of gold from all future Halfling workers, they think hes being greedy. When Chicchuck saw no other way to stop the abusive Halfling work conditions.

Half foots are the ultimate haters in the Dungeon Meshi universe. All of them bond over their mutual enjoyment of talking shit about other races. It’s even funnier when you consider they invented the word “Troll” because it originally meant anyone who is taller than them.

Chilchuck is legit a community leader and a Union Man among Half Foots.
My guess is that since their lifespan is so short, half-foots tend to get money from doing illegal things because it's faster to get money that way compared to Tall-Men normal work span. So Chilchuck having union and actually doing things that more akin to Tall-Men or Elves is weird and unsustainable.

No, the drive towards criminality is because all other races infantalize half-foots, making them easy marks. The naturally short lifespan of a half-foot is even more shortened because other races also see them as disposable, using them as siren lures or as fodder for magical experimentation. It's the latter in particular that drove Chil to create a union.

@@kos2919 No Tall men life expectancy is about 60 in this series. Half foot life expectancy is around 50. This includes magic helping both races. Chilchuck even mentions that some half foots make it to 100 but that’s rare.

Chilchuck almost got scammed once and almost died for it. Casuing him to had the rule of pay first.
And after that, he became the guild leader of the halfings. That's also Laos learn about him, because his old teammate introduce him.

I feel like there's some evidence in the extra comics that Kuro does have some idea of what's going on. He knows, maybe not as much as he should know, that mick is trying to trick him. But he knows that mick relies on him, and he likes the company.
It's more than that, Mickbell freed Kuro from slavery and insisted on accompanying Mick afterwards. There's no trickery involved

I really like how you cant hate or dislike any character in the series. Mickbell scene gossiping with Chilchuck really clear it that the group doesnt dislike laios group anymore (since kabru already told them that laios doesnt do anything that he feel guilty rom reading laios expression). Hell cant event dislike the antagonist crazy mage since he is doing all that coz traumatized by his prev master dead

Half-foots are kind of like if humans just kept on existing without going through puberty, so it makes sense that male and female half-foots look similar. Just look at Chilchuck as a tall man from the changeling episodes.

Even if the unions dont do anything, then the law makes them worth "something" because at least in theory an union always has some meanings and options.

Apparently the official manga translations confused him for a girl too. I guess he looks & sounds that girly to the point that even official media confuses it.
I mean, a lot of prepubescent boys in anime are voiced by women, and half-foots as a race are kind of like humans who never go through puberty, so it makes sense that it's easy to confuse Mick for a girl and that he's voiced by a female VA.
His VA in Japanese is also a woman but like many women VA voice male characters…
Ok, out of context here: Is a kobold a dogman, a lizardman, or both? I thought it was both, then I saw them as what goblins are to orcs and kobolds are to lizardmen. But then eastern depictions of kobolds are dogmen, so I'm just confused man...
It’s a weird thing. TLDR: Lizard kobolds are more popular in the states and dog kobolds are more popular in Japan
History lesson time, from what I remember the kobold was first described as having a muzzle(like the protruding mouth of dogs/lizards, not the flat face of humans) and “doglike vocalisations” while also being somewhat goblin-esque.
In the States, DnD was a big hit and its handbook illustrations focused a bit more on the goblin aspect and then it evolved to be more lizard like (to differentiate from actual goblins)
In Japan, a video game called Wizardry was a big hit and its portrayal of kobolds took the “dog like vocalisations” as them being furry like a dog.
In fact the author of Dunmeshi cited Wizardry as a source of inspiration that got into her Manga.
Wizardry was very popular in Japan, and it's where this specific type of fantasy was born. Wizardry takes a lot from early editions of d&d (1e and 2e), which is when orcs were more pig like and kobolds more dog like. Their designs diverged at that point and evolved to be very different from one another
In old legends kobolds are goblins that use magic to disguise themselves as dogs. DnD changed them to reptilian because they wanted a race of creatures that serve dragons.
To be honest I prefer Dogman version. Lizardman is already taken by.... lizard men. Why have both lizard men and Kobolds as lizards anyway
