    Many Magic the Gathering Players ask the question: "Why is it that Pokemon has alt-art full foil ultra rares in regular packs... and available to buy in collector sets... and WHAAAAAAAT, textured cards!?"

    • @ty_sylicus

      Pokemon TCG full art Ultra Rares are just amazing to look at and to hold. They have a lovely tactile texture and seem to have a weight to them. I still have some of my old cards from before I left the game. Goundon is boss.

    I play MTG and my son is getting into Pokémon now, and when I go to my LGS looking at the similar products like the fatpacks/bundles I can’t believe Pokémon offers stuff like card sleeves, dice, token markers and playmats already inside the box usually at the same cost! When on a budget all the Pokémon stuff seems like such a better deal than MTG stuff. Not always but more so than not to be fair.

  • @pinballwitch5256
    @pinballwitch5256 Před 5 lety +162

    I liked this comparison video. It showed how different companies are handling special product, and that's something neat to see.
    As a mostly casual player who does keep up on what's powerful and what's "not great" I actually like when they make product for ppl like myself. I like all 5 of the promo cards, and have decks already built most of them would fit in as fun cards to play in 3 and 4 person casual planechase games (my favorite format). I will def be looking to get a copy of the mtg gift pack.
    That said, I do think it could be better in the ways you've pointed out. I think the pokemon set is really neat and comes with lots of cool stuff. A bit too pricey for myself if I were more into the game (currently I only play with pre-constructed decks occasionally with my girlfriend.)
    I like that both come with the codes, tho I wish the magic packs also started coming with codes the way the pokemon packs do. I also appreciate that you give away the codes when you review these products. I have never tried to use one myself, as I'm slow and not likely to get on before someone else has, but it's a nice touch on your part and I like that.
    Over all, while I understand when you're discussing the need for magic to be made more affordable for the major formats, and I totally agree, I do like sometimes these products are made for casual players like myself. I have got almost every planeswalker deck that's been made and they're super fun for a simple, causal time to just bust out and not have to think about being super strong against each other. That's just my take. I like these products, and think they should keep making them, in addition to making better products to help get needed reprints out there (cause the masters sets aren't good enough, especially at their costs.)

Objectively speaking, the Pokemon product is just amazing, but the mtg one does fall flat. It's as if WoTC doesnt really listen to feedback, and while its better than last year's, it'd be nice to maybe see a gift box thats guilds of ravnica themed with one foil rare from each guild, like assassin's trophy, swiftblade vindicator, niv mizzet parun, connive//concoct, and camaraderie alongside the packs and the basics (each themed like the guild kits).

    I think that designing cards to be underwhelming on purpose is straight silly. They keep evaluating cards by power level or target audience and because of that they are facing the "problem" with the wrong mindset. If they would aim for flavor and play style on each of their cards..we would not need for all of them to be good in the competitive arena, we would just enjoy the cards that match our fantasy....for example if i liked strategies centered in graveyard recursion...there are still tons of unexplored ways to do that, i would hunt for each and every common or uncommon i need of that type to include it in a recursion EDH or casual deck, and i would never ever complain that they are not rares, or spiky, or even foil....
    Simply put: i don't need more cards, i need more cards to fall in love with.

I think this kind of comparison is important to understanding why certain corporate decisions ultimately work or fail. As consumers it helps us understand what kind of standard we should be holding the creators and manufacturers of our own games to.

    Tapu Lele had already gone down in price quite a bit before this product was announced, and was no longer as expensive as you said here... That said, the promo *did* indeed still bring down the price further... though not as much as it would have if the box itself wasn't $50. Many Pokémon players (couldn't help myself) think that the box is priced too high and that the fact that half the booster packs in it are no longer in standard (with Ancient Origins not having *been* in standard for nearly a year and a half now) makes the whole thing a lot less appealing than it otherwise would...
    But I still think it's a good thing that they made this. Tapu Lele *needed* to be made more easily available. Just a shame that they released it around the same time that the Lost Thunder Alolan Ninetales popped up, and might just be even *more* powerful and is sure to rise to similarly ridiculous prices due to how hard it is to get *anything* from that particular set...

    Prof, if WOTC were to label their packaged products that are appropriate for beginners/casual/kitchen tables as such ON THE BOX (Planeswalker decks, Gift Packs, Deckbuilder kits) and likewise label products for tournament play and collectors (Masters sets, theoretical booster packs of just uncommons and rares) and products that have overlap between both audiences (Bundles, regular boosters), would that change your grading criteria for these packaged items?

    I stopped playing pokemon tcg to get into MTG earlier this year, but I've been wanting to get back into pokemon and I think this tapu lele gx box sold me on coming back. Still love magic and I'm gonna continue playing but even without playing standard pokemon ik tapu lele gx lol and seeing it get a reprint like this is awesome, it shows that pokemon understands it's player base. I love both games and I hope Wizards sees not only how well pokemon premium boxes are selling but also this video, and they start making better choices and products for the players who love the game and are the very reason they get to keep making it. Here's to hoping lol

    If I could make a suggestion for these product comparisons, would it be possible to add an extra line on the summary shots (e.g. at 10:38 of the video) that shows how much net value one could get from a product? Maybe something like: Total Value - MSRP = Net Value. Or have: (Total Value)/MSRP = Net Value %.

I know they recently released a preconstructed Heroes and Villains deck, and it sounds like really good value with full playsets of the games' mythic equivalent cards. It sounds like it is about equivalent to a mtg dual deck.

    MTG had these in the form of Duel decks. They were a mixed bag after a few batches and that was designed that way on purpose sadly. Some were amazing (like Jace vs Chandra) while some were pure garbage fire (like most of non PW ones). I think they should scale up the PW decks a bit more. They can add more boosters to "boost" value if they refuse to reprint obviously expensive cards there (sometimes they miss it and print value like Pia and Kiran, but they really aim for no value allowed). I think they should forget the whole Standard legal deal with those PW decks. They should print whatever. It's hard to add Carnage Tyrants and kill the EV of standard boxes (which is bad for stores as well, they are the biggest box openers after all), so they should be able to reprint older cards with some value but bad fit for master sets or Core sets. This would be the best instead of just randomly creating line of products and see which one sticks. They could legitimately make new PW decks every once 3 months (well they are doing it with those piss poor ones we have now). So if they need to make a Battlebond or Planeschase, they actually give more time to develop them instead of making them annual or semestral products.
    Also, they could spice up it with crazy foil styles like Pokemon or every other collectable. Dunno if the card stock won't allow for special holo effects (hey they had some cool ones in the past in the form of test prints and Japanese promos), but those cards aren't meant for tournament staples anyway, so at least make them extra shiny and textured. I know they wanna cut the cost of production (like the assured very bad quality in precons since 2015 and the disaster with Amonkhet and Ixalan paper stock), so improving the quality isn't on their list of priorities. However, this is a collectable item, so they should improve the quality. They could increase the price in this case. They aren't smash hit sellers anyway, so at least increase the quality while increasing the price. It is meant to attract more casual players and collectors which quality products would matter more.

    Here's a key difference between the two markets: I can pretty easily buy the Pokemon set at a random target (I've seen it more than once recently). If the MTG set has Trophy and Phoenix it I can guarantee I'd never see it at retail ever. The mark up would be instant and huge. MTG, at least in my area, has a much more significant singles market than Pokemon. While WOTC says they don't monitor the secondary market, they know better at some point. Demand for MTG will always be bigger than Pokemon and that impacts what can be reasonably reprinted. The selesnya deck in my area is gone at retail as an example.

      David Martin I don’t think people are demanding wotc give us the most recently released, high demand standard/modern playable cards in gift packs. But there are other usable cards that are not among the current foremost chase cards such as those you mentioned that can be put into a gift box. I’d imagine it would sell at least as well as a gift box filled with unusable cards.

  • @BunBros

    I believe the dilemma of the exclusive standard playable cards there should be a middle ground. Nothing super breaking but maybe like a "copy" of a standard deck building staple. I won't lie the Johnny in me wants to build around it but I really would like Timmy cards too like just big beefy bombs that are highly inefficient to pull off in a high competitive format but flashy and exciting to see nonetheless. I believe like playing Child of Alara as an example or Progenitous. They were big bombs when they hit the field but the trick was trying to find a way and that I would like.

    The one thing I think Pokemon does better with supplementary packages is that they're almost always worth the money. Most of them include booster packs (sometimes even exclusive packs like Generations of 2016 or Shining Legends of 2018) as well as coins, pins, jumbo cards, exclusive special printings of cards... they just add a lot of value to their fancy packages. They command a higher price tag, sure, but I think WotC has something to learn from TPCI here.

  • @DanteTCW
    @DanteTCW Před 5 lety

    Brilliant video as always, Professor. I have to say that while I share your dislike of the unplayable, I think the reasoning is that should a planeswalker deck or other non-random sealed product contain a card that sees top tier play, that product will be next to unavailable for the casual crowd as the tournament level players will scoop them up with people only looking to see that chase cards on eBay and such grabbing the rest.
    I remember back in the olden days of Kamigawa that the precon decks for betrayers of Kamigawa, one of the decks were always out of stock at game-stores, the other ones were in great supply- The one that was out of stock without exception was always the "rat's nest" deck. Why? Well it came with a copy of Umezawa's Jitte. I recall one of my back then three local games stores made the decision to limit purchases of that deck to one per customer.
    Sadly in order to keep product available for the casual crowd, precons have to be kept fairly mediocre or the people they were intended for won't be able to get hold of them as tournament level players or "shit-heel" scalpers will go to great lengths to get cards for their decks or just to sell on at inflated prices.
    The way I see it, WotC has a hard time winning with precon product no matter what they do.

    While it's true the exclusive MTG cards are unlikely to break the meta, some are fairly decent options for budget/mid-power decks. The Vampire is decent lifegain on a removal, even if the timing is weird. Brontodon is imo the most playable, because it is very good at closing games. If you land ramp into it, this is a 14/14 Trample for 7 manas. Even with dorks, this is likely a 2 shot at worst.

(None of those even encroach on Ravnica cards.)

    The five exclusive cards are decent in commander, you just have to have an alike deck. The angel would go good in a Mentor deck, the turtle would go good in a "butt swinger" Arcades decks, the vampire would go in the Whisper deck, the phoenix would go good in a Naya Revolt deck and the brontodon would be good in a Windgrace deck. There is potential in any card as long as you're open minded.

    Not that it makes is much better, but I did have decks that would make good use of three of the 5 Magic rares. They are Commander decks, sure, and not 'competitive' in the traditional sense, but they are fun decks that will enjoy these new cards. Even then, though, I think that might barely push it to a C-, given that I have two cards with no home and no idea what to do with them. Just my two cents, at least, for anyone wondering if its worth it for the cards if you have use for them. Also, some of them might find a home in my Singleton decks on Arena... but I'm not holding my breath.
