    Most of those on Southern are the ones that were used on Silverlink for decades. Those lines their top speed were 45mph. They have since been used on Southern at their top speed of 75mph. As the traction motors are very old and they were used to travelling at such a slow line speed, their traction motors apparently keep burning out. They are quickly running out of parts to replace them. They weren't built to travel so fast on the third rail. All of their journeys at high speed have been on the overhead cable.

    I'm doubtful about them leaving this December. For years, even way before the northern ones got withdrawn, I've been thinking that if they get the most positive upgrades, they could be in service until as late as 2029. However, let's not be ungrateful. These are aged now and they have been treated with honour. I'm sure they will be missed.

      Whatever happens, they will be short, so far as I can see… the rumour is that the Southeastern 377s will transfer to Southern when the remaining 12 707s move over from SWR. But this is only 20 - 30 units which doesn’t fully replace the 455s, let alone the 313s. Additionally it is rumoured that the 379s could go to GWR and 387s to Southern but I’m not sure how much substance there is in that rumour.

    It is sad, but...If they do get new units, send a mix of 377/1s and 4s to the coast and use the newer units to connect the city and coast..(i hope it wont be boring aventras maybe CAF ,stadler or some alternitive alstom product that looks retro designed to look like a classic UK train...like a mk3 317 or networker ..something more appealing to the uk train crowd 🙂). Or have southeastern give back the 377/5s
    It means they can bring some of their 465/2s back into service to share the Gillingham services with the /9s and or Ashford services. It can also give southeastern a reason to have the class 707s fitted with toilets so the can go down to Ashford too free up some 465s for metro/suburban journeys too. So they have a nice mix of trains.

    The issue I think will be a shortage of rolling stock - they’re already down 40 or so units from the 455 retirement, unless they do get the 377s from Southeastern or 387s which have been displaced by 379s or something like that, the removal of so many units seems incredibly short sighted.

    • @EM-yk1dw

      The 379s will end going for scrap, like the 365s, outrageous.

    • @AnthonyFurnival
      @AnthonyFurnival Před rokem +1

      @@EM-yk1dw looks that way - there were plans last summer (and may still be) for GWR to take them on but I don’t see it happening myself. They’ve put out a tender for 30 units to go at 110mph to boost the London - south wales capacity. It’s been suggested the 379s could be used for that… issue is they are 100mph ops which would suggest either they are used to displace 387s from the Newbury/ Didcot routes or they are upgraded to match the 387s. Alternatively they could go to GN to free off 387s from there… but I’m thinking it’ll all fall by the wayside and like you say, they could be scrapped which would be a travesty.

    • @EM-yk1dw
      @EM-yk1dw Před rokem +1

      @@AnthonyFurnival Indeed there is no planning in today’s railway, just wasting money, for example look at the GWR 769 farce. The Southern 455s were withdrawn with no replacement and I gather there have short forms and overcrowding ever since.

    • @AnthonyFurnival
      @AnthonyFurnival Před rokem +1

      @@EM-yk1dw Yep - I think the assumption was that they’d get the 377s from SE, but SE won’t release anything until they get the 707s from SWR, and in turn they won’t release them until the 701s care in service. It’s farcical - I hate to say it but renationalised railways and a sensible fleet rationalisation plan is the only real way forward now.

      @EM-yk1dw Před rokem +1

      @@AnthonyFurnival I agree Anthony, I did hear or read about the Class 377s being sought after by Southern as replacements for their 455s but as you quite rightly say it all depends on the 707s being released to SE for them to release anything in return, and as for the SWR Class 701 debacle…well the less about that the better I’d say!

    Can't say I'll be sorry to see them go. Never found them particularly comfortable to ride in when they were used for a while on the Tonbridge-Redhill services some years ago. But then passenger comfort is not something that Southern/Thameslink pay much attention to these days. The 'ironing board' seats are alright for a journey of a few stops, but travelling from Brighton to London or further north is not a particularly comfortable experience.
