    It’s wild to me that Kristi was considered primarily as an artistic skater who needed to catch up to Midori and Tonya. The reality is there is and was no athlete like Midori, who could do triple triple combinations when she was 12. But Kristi wasn’t no punk on the technical side. She was weirdly inconsistent on the triple salchow but by 1992, she was doing triple lutz triple toe, which is still an extremely tough combination today. She always had two lutzes in her programs, the flip was one of her strongest jumps. So she could reliably do 6 triples in her long programs. The only people who could match or beat that were Midori, Tonya and later Chen Lu. So it wasn’t fair to peg her primarily an artistic skater. She didn’t skate with nearly the power and speed Midori and Tonya did, but then again, no one did.

    • @jessicadebernard8210
      @jessicadebernard8210 Před 6 měsíci

      I wonder why Kristi didn’t just omit the salchow from her programs. She almost never landed it. I think ‘92 nationals was one of the only times (and a perfect performance, that one ). She could have easily just put in a second triple flip or loop and forgotten about the salchow and had consistently clean programs all the time.

      @nicholasp1096 Před 4 měsíci

      @@jessicadebernard8210 Skaters were starting to attempt and land the whole set of triples which was something new at that time. Ito really started that as she was really the only one being able to do all the triples. Yamaguchi knew she needed everything in her arsenal to win and she had that here, the miss on the salchow didnt cost her because Ito had a mini meltdown and Harding missed her salchow and triple toe combo too.

    • @ronaround74
      @ronaround74 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@jessicadebernard8210 Kristi probably didn't want to compete with only six planned triples vs. Ito's and Harding's seven (including the axel)... she couldn't have just subbed in a flip or loop for the salchow since she was already repeating the lutz and the toe loop.

      @@ronaround74 This competition was my favorite worlds because of the fact that Yamaguchi, Ito or Harding could all have legit won depending on who hit better. Kerrigan and Bonaly were fighting for bronze. It also introduced Chouinard and Chen on the world stage. 90 was a 2 horse race with Ito and Trenary, and the next years worlds was a thorough mess in both Sp and LPs outside of Kristi.

    Like Michelle, Kristi's program was designed to win if her competitors didn't land their big jumps/combos - it was the completeness of the package (jumps, spins, artistry/choreo) that made her special, not any single element

    • @Bnizzofashizzo
      @Bnizzofashizzo Před 19 dny +1

      Michelle did not have Yama’s Lutz/Toe , nor did she have a clean Lutz. Kristi only had one lady that could’ve beaten her theoretically and that would’ve been Midori. Otherwise, she was light years of ahead of everyone else.
      Michelle , was frequently vulnerable from the element standpoint, but like Christy, her artistry stood the test of time

    • @samdevil82

      I mentioned this on the video of the Canadian broadcast: Kristi skated with a floating, zen-like quality. Her technical components were fairly consistent and reliable. But the execution - the seamless integration of her jumps with the choreography - and the way her whole body consumed and processed the music, were both unique, then and now. I think having skated pairs gave her an edge, and she was a natural when it came to ballroom dancing (i.e. Dancing With the Stars).

      +Pascoe Braun I am gonna let the medals speak for themselves. In my opinion, Tonya, as good as a skater she is, was never a strong graceful and well-rounded skater like Kristi. True that Kristi had her fair share of mistakes, especially with her salchow, her well-roundedness was good enough to cover that. Tonya on the other hand had landed the triple axel. But even that jump was inconsistent. She is a great jumper, but was never well-rounded enough to cover her errors. When Tonya made her mistakes, they were more glaring, allowing for the well-rounded skaters like Kristi to rise.

      She's consistent but I find her kind of boring to watch. Tonya, Midori, Nancy, Yuka, Jill, Surya all had something unique at least during that time, something specific you could watch for when they skated. Kristi was a very balanced skater, and seemed to be very sweet and humble which was nice. But nothing ever really "wowed" me.

      Agree. She hit the big trick but let it go on the easier jumps and in the end, she had to beat Kristi on the technical mark without a shadow of a doubt. She had better speed, power and edges on her jumps , so that was in her corner. But she left the door open.

      Kristi did the triple lutz-triple toe combo at the 1992 Olympics. I think that was her only time she did so. I also agree that this program would do well now too. What happened to the ladies? How come more of them are not doing triple axels or even a quad? Miki Ando had a quad, Surya Bonaly tried one, and Sasha Cohen was practicing one too . The men have progressed the sport with more quads, but the ladies haven't progressed it as much in terms of jumps. Yes, I was thinking the same thing as Carlos that this program was as difficult as the ones today.

      @natew5694 Před 6 lety +3

      She did the 3LZ-3TOE again at 1992 worlds, so it was no fluke thankfully. It seems as though the top tier today is going with a second 3-3 combo rather than a quad or triple axel. But Daleman in Canada supposedly started hitting quad toes in practice recently, so we'll see. Mirai Nagasu keeps standing up on triple axels and just needs to complete the rotations more cleanly.

      Yeah, I heard that at Skate America about the quad. I'm not a big fan of Daleman because of her artistry is not really there. However, she is progressing the sport in the jumps and I hope she can do a quad toe. That would be better than Jason Brown. lol It's been impressive that Mirai continually stands up on the triple axel. Yeah, she needs to completely rotate to get the points for that much risk. She's one of the only women currently attempting it so good for her. Yeah, I couldn't remember if Kristi hit the 3lutz-3toe at 1992 Worlds. I knew she did it at the Olympics though.

I think her modern fans were too young to remember this period, and watched that dumb movie and think they know everything about FS and Tonya. Truthfully, she was not a complete skater nor consistent enough with her jumps to even really be legend in that arena (like Midori). Tonya had a solid 1991, but it was downhill after that. Her own fault too- none of that blaming the judges, society, blah blah crap. She could win when she tried (and actually trained and kept her weight down).

The crash into the camera pit injured her ribs and did rattle her when she tried to do the triple Lutz in the Long Program the next day. With Ito have a very sub par Long, Kerrigan skated a stronger program than expected, despite the fall on the triple Salchow because she landed a 3toe-3toe combination, which was not done at the 91 Nationals a month earlier.

    @Parker528 Also, since the change to the IJS scoring system, it's difficult for a country to sweep the medals now. However, there was talk that at 2010 Vancouver, Belbin & Agosto were hung out to dry by the judges because there was belief that there was no way that the judges would let North America take the Top 3 in an event that was once dominated by Russian/Soviets.
    BTW, where you spread the wealth only increases popularity in the medaling country. 2008 Worlds in Ladies was a good example

    @Parker528 Lastly, Russia went 1 & 2 in both Pairs and Ice Dancing at the 2011 World Jrs., while at the 2011 Europeans, France was 1 & 2 in the Men's. And if it weren't for Savchenko & Szolkowy of Germany, Russia would have swept the medals in Pairs.
    Had the 2011 Worlds taken place, most likely Japan would have won 2 medals in the Ladies' event, while there was a shot for the Japanese Men to sweep the medals.

    Consider how Ito's technical merit was (and still is) the benchmark, Kristi coped pretty well. Her complex entrance to the jumps (footwork, ina bauer, and split jumps) would've gotten more credit under the rules today. I also find her to be technically better than Harding. Sure, Harding's got the height in her jumps, but her jumps are often off-axis, and she was also inconsistent and sloppy.

    • @vistaprime
      @vistaprime Před 5 lety +1

      I don't' think Ito was any more consistent than Harding. Ito had nerves, Harding didn't train as she should. I never cared for Kristi's basic skating skills, in that department both women had her beat.

    @Parker528 NO SUCH THING. It's only an informal preference as the ISU believe that it's better to spread the wealth with the medals so that audiences from other countries don't feel shut out of a chance at a medal. But there have been instances since this where a single country has swept the medals. The former Soviet Union swept the Pairs and Ice Dancing medals at the 1992 Europeans, Russia swept the Ice Dancing medals at the 1993 Worlds.

Also,Karl Schäfer was a multiple Gold Medalist in the Men's Event in the 1930s, therefore, the Karl Schäfer Memorial aka Vienna Cup is a non-Grand Prix event competed each year in October. i don't understand the 5.6 for such a strong program. 2 triple lutzes, a triple triple, and all triples landed aside from a popped salchow, and she had no other skaters to leave room for, and she did more than every other skater. Yet she got a 5.6. That's gotta be one of the most bogus scores ever. Tonya had powerful jumps, but she wasn't that great at jumping. She was inconsistent and never landed a 3x after 1991, and just flopped around in her performances after 91. Midori was a brilliant jumper.

    • @intldawn
      @intldawn Před 9 lety +8

      Absolutely a bogus score. Even if you boil it down to the most rudimentary metric, Kristi did six triples (including a 3-3 combination) while Tonya only did four of her planned seven, even though that includes the triple axel. There's no way that if Tonya's performance merited 5.8's and 5.9's for technical that Kristi should be below that. Tonya popping her 3-3 combo was the killer. I think that had she landed that, she would have won, but it would have been close. Tonya had faster, more powerful spins which rightfully earned her points, but Kristi was the clear winner in my mind.

There seemed to be more grace and flow to KY's plus when she hit her triple lutz/triple toe and triple flip-half turn triple toe in difft competitions it is more difficult than Kwans triple toe/triple toe. Agreed. I enjoyed MK's skating but prefer KY's by a pretty substantial margin. You put it very nicely, it's not something I can quite explain... I simply find KY to be the complete FS, despite her jumps being somewhat small in height. She's very clean technically (although one could argue her Lutz edge I guess). But also beautiful beautiful to watch. Something about MK fell a little flat for me, maybe she lacked KY's charisma. Anyway I preferred MK by a large margin to TL. 98 OG was hard to watch.

      Exactly. But that's why it must be realized that this championships meant more to Tonya, as in a life situation. People such as Kristi had access to lots of things including her family, and some finances, so she doesn't have much to lose. Tonya really needed the win here to help her career, finances and of course, possibly freeing herself from her husband Jeff. That's why Tonya was and is a totally different situation on the ice.

    Michelle‘s coach, Frank Carroll, should‘ve incorporated a triple-triple jump combination into her program while he had the chance. Michelle could only do a triple-double jump combo in her programs. She lost to Tara at Nagano Olympics 98 bc Tara pulled a triple-triple jump combo in her LP.
    Michelle‘s team played it too safe. This was a coaching error. They should‘ve sensed skating was heading in a jump-oriented direction.

      shihlin1 I totally agreed. While I was and still am one of MK’s biggest fans, the fact that she didn’t try and compete something harder than a 3toe-3toe was probably one of her downfalls when it came to the Olympic Games. I definitely wished she had also worked a little more with a spin doctor. As beautiful as her basic spins were, by the time the CoP came around, it was even more obvious where her weak spins came into light. But what Michelle did, she did well; I guess she relied on her tried and true elements too much. :(
