The Haunting is a 1999 American supernatural horror film directed by Jan de Bont. The film is a remake of the psychological horror film of the same name. Critic there's a sequel to Scary God Mother! REVIEW IT PLEASE
Is it just me, or has there been more copyright claims lately than usual?
Do formula 51. I've never seen anyone do that movie.
Fun fact: I actually lived in the manor house that they used for the exterior shots in this movie while I was studying abroad in England. It’s actually a college for American students located in Grantham, England that is owned by an American university. And they have a huge poster for this film in the movie room.
Bones in the fireplace?
I was wondering if any graduate students who studied there at Harlaxton Manor would comment on the exterior film location. Is the inside of the Manor anything like the studio interiors apart from the extremely Gothic designs shown in the movie? I wonder if tourists can visit it .
Oh you lucky creature
My sister lived there for a bit as well, my family and I went to visit her there, it was a really beautiful place. Visitors there usually stay in the stable houses but I think the area my parents were supposed to stay in had some water damage so they got to stay in the presidential suite, it was huge and a really nice room.
@@frankcirrito6550 From what I can remember (it’s been about 13 years since I’ve seen it) it didn’t look much like the interior of the movies. It did have a bit of a gothic architecture from what I can remember, unfortunately I don’t think it’s open to tourists, it may be possible to tour it in the summer since it is owned by a university and there aren’t students living there in the summer.
The amount of copyright claims on youtube is "Reeaally creepy."

This film is awful, but I'd like to mention something. Changing it to a sleep study cover story is actually fairly accurate to modern day human study ethics. Providing a false study topic can provide more genuine data for the actual topic, since humans tend to alter their behavior depending on what results they think the researcher wants.
True, however it also means that the only group he has are insomniacs. So any results he gathers have no scientific value because it can easily be explained by the subjects being sleep deprived.
I disagree. I watched this movie as a kid and still do. Then I looked up the movie on the internet and found that apparently the general consensus is that movie is bad.
While it's true many studies conceal their true hypothesis, in order to be approved by the board, they have to demonstrate the subject will not be susceptible to any mental/pshysical harm. Any study on fear inherently means potential harm and informed consent must be enforced. In real life, this study might be approved but only with much more stringent precautions and after gaining as much information on the subject as possible. Eleanor would be passed over because of her recent loss increasing the potential for psychological harm. So to bring this to a close, no, this movie isn't scientifically valid. And it sucks.
Which could have *possibly* made the remake slightly intelligent sounding if it wasn't for the fact they completely failed to impliment any concept of the real or fake study into the movie whatsoever. The assistants were gone pretty much immediately, there were no data gathering instruments used at all and the "scientist" performing the study (either one) fucking *went to sleep* on the first night with everyone else.
It was quite literally thrown in for no reason at all and completely abandoned in the beginnings of the first act of the movie.
Jesse W nothing about your comment was scientifically valid, either. Calling the higher-ups “The Board” doesn’t make the nonsense you’re speaking any more valid.
Okay, the copyright claims are getting a little out of hand at this point.
+otakon17 Trust us, we know.
Agreed.
Sort of
They have money, they can just drive to a judge's or politicians house with a bag of money and be like "what fair use?"
Outlaw7263 but they're not making any money with this, or am I missing something? They simply cause parts of videos which have been watched anyway lose some audio or video snippets. It doesn't make any sense to me.
I've always laughed at the part where Eleanor tells the children she's listening, and as soon as they 'say' something she immediately freaks out. Guess she was only half listening.
The Haunting (1963) was the best adaptation of Shirley's novel until Mike Flanagan's The Haunting of Hill House appeared. That series is amazing and does something new with the novel while still keeping many things from the original novel and movie.
18:05 wow Daphne, fred, shaggy and Velma sure have changed in this version
cubbleshasreturned I don't know how Owen Wilson got to play fred, but it doesn't work, and Liam Neeson as Shaggy was weird, but sounds like a hilarious Funny Or Die or SNL skit.
Scooby is just fucking dead.
Catherine Zeta-Jones isn't a terrible choice for Daphne, Lili Taylor would be a good Velma and I can see Owen Wilson as Fred or Shaggy. But yeah, Liam Neeson doesn't fit whatsoever.

‘And I killed Owen Wilson too!’”
3:33 Thing is though, it's a pretty common practice for psychology researchers not to tell test subjects the true nature of some experiments and tests in order to minimize bias. So yeah, that kind of deception is one part that's actually fairly realistic.
But perhaps it was a mistake to make zero connections between the surface meaning of the experiment, the secret meaning of the experiment, and the actual premise of the movie.
And yet the doctor doesn’t follow any other realistic proceedings, like having a control group, or actually doing research
@LadyGaGa is hot actual good movies tend to follow through on their premise regardless of being just a movie. This movie didn't even bother trying to follow through on the whole psych study concept in any way shape or form.
Tricking research subjects? Sounds unethical.
An Owen Wilson "wow" makes every movie worth watching. And we get two epic ones in The Haunting.
"Silence!! I kill you!!" That one had me on the floor laughing.
Same! It really took it out.
You sure NC didn't kidnap Achmed just for that one joke?
Owen Wilson had a rough time back in 1999, first he was decapitated in the fireplace by the fireplace flue in the remake of the Haunting. Later that same year Wilson gets his space helmet busted open on impact in Armageddon.
Yeah and two year prior to that he got eaten by a giant snake. Anaconda (1997)
Armageddon was 98.
Not to drag down the mood, but Owen Wilson has also struggled with suicidal depression and even attempted suicide at one point but thankfully got some psychological help and luckily is still with us today. He really has had a rough time of it in the past. He may not be the very best actor, but he seems like a good guy.
For what he lacks in acting chops he makes up for with a genuine and easy-going demeanor. I've always found him to be rather charming in his own unique way. Regardless, I'm just glad that he hasn't given in completely to his struggles. As someone who battles with that same condition for my own reasons, I know it can be tough.

@@dr.altoclef9255 Yeah true there are some unanswered plot points but I love the Lore of this movie lol wish there was more or a prequel made
This story has been remade again recently in the form of the “haunting of hill house” Netflix series but ironically its one of the only adaptations that actually bears the original name of the story but is the farthest from it in actual plot. This and most other adaptations usually try to adapt Jackson’s actual plot more accurately. It’s such a prevalent story in horror pop culture although it’s much more of a subtle fame. Scary Movie 2 was, for the most part, a spoof of this story with Tim curry taking on the dr. Montague character. Hill house sojourns for better or worse and always it seems it always will. Shirley Jackson is such an underrated author imo. She had so much to do with the modern conception of the haunted house. Without her and, the amytiville horror and poltergeist the contemporary archetypal haunted house story would not exist or would probably be unrecognizably different.

But when I grew up and learned that most really good horror movies were black and white, I was excited to learn that there was a better and more frightening version. When seeing the beginning of the movie in this review I thought huh this doesn't seem terrible but somehow it just continued to get worst and worst
I thought the scene with her sister and brother-in-law was acted better by the minor characters than the original, but that is all. The scene was made a great deal more harsh; her sister's family were horrid--that change didn't bother me too much, but it just kept getting worse, and ever more stupid.
It's about family, and that's what's really powerful about it.
Let's also add the power of friendshit too ?
Hey, your username sounds familiar. Oh well.
Should be familiar. He made those Harry Potter youtube poops!
It’s about family, and family is a verb.
A FAMily picCHA!
NO IT'S NOT!
“When you get down to it, what’s the Haunting about? ‘It’s about family’ NO ITS NOT”
*looks at Netflix series and laughs awkwardly*
“Oh no you don’t, you’re gonna pay for Clash of the Titans!”
“Say you’re not doing the sequel!”
Neeèver!
As much as I know that's a x files parody intro
That music fits very well
NOSTALGIA-WEEB
That was a typo
I'm leaving it in
5:45 I think when the original Haunting was made, they couldn't outright say if a character was anything but straight. So, writers had to work around that.
If all of the man's children died, how could Eleanor be his great grandchild?
Liz Biehn, good next time iam just gonna ask a girl "Are you Liz Biehn?"
ok i love you truly i do but the point of the participants not knowing about the haunted house is too make them question their own sanity and make them more afraid! once over the doctor doesn't think the place is REALLY haunted just creepy enough to scare people into believing it was haunted for science!! so in the end, most of them die from the doctors lies and negligence and Eleanor just thinking she's going crazy :v but otherwise i love your review of this!!
13:41 - after all this years, I still laugh my ass off every single time this scene plays
19:10 actually, I always saw it as Elenor being pulled out of bed by one of the kid-ghosts, making the evil ghost of Hugh Crane miss her with his evil gaze-attack or whatever it was. In that way, the line "who was holding my hand (just now)" works. I think seeing a remake qwithout having seen the original makes you interpret the movie in a slightly more unbiased way, opening up your mind to more options allowing for a better viewing.
Fitting that during Nostalgia Ween we bring back old reviews from the dead
Also Plz do Beetle Juice
EpicsBroFlame why do Beetlejuice it’s a good movie
@@willcarroll3712 He doesn't do just bad movies...
He kinda does, actually. Hence his tagline "so you don't have to". Its rare that he reviews something he personally likes a lot. Hook comes to mind. @@shadows_star
He does films like "Jurassic Park", and he LOVES that one. He just doesn't deny that it has problems like all films do. I'd like to see how he handles Beetlejuice myself.
unrelated but i asked him to at a con in 2011. his response was, i quote, "no way, hah, i love beetlejuice!"
The writing for gay people in the media hasn’t got much better, most of those characters still define themselves solely by their gayness, I wish we’d just get to the point where everyone realizes that gay isn’t a personality
I'm honestly not sure if it'll ever happen. We still get movies with characters defined by their blackness
Ben McDonald No kidding. It’s pretty bad when My Little Pony can write gay characters better than most movies. Yes, there really is a gay couple in the show, and no, it isn’t shoved in your face.
@@Double-R-Nothing interesting but I'm not motivated to watch mlp to find out.
Jude Ceant That’s totally fine. Besides, there’s more to the show than subtly gay characters. Me, I got into it for the comedy and the drama. Yeah, there’s drama in a frigging My Little Pony show. But it’s not for everyone, I understand.
Inner Brony: *KILL JUDE, IT HAS DISRESPECTED US*
Me: quiet, you.
@@Double-R-Nothing I know my friend says it's his guilty pleasure to watch it but I've never seen the appeal and even more I'm not even sure where you guys go to watch it. Cause I don't see it anywhere on TV either.
Nothing can beat the original released in 1963
Well Mr.Critic, your video made me want to watch the original The Haunting. And I gotta say, this is one of the best horror movie, and even movie, I have ever seen in my life. I thought the TV show "The Haunting of Hill House" by Mike Flanagan was good (which it is), but after watching the original, I gotta say, it definitely takes the cake. It's so subtitle, creepy and disturbing, you never know what is her imagination and what is not, or if there are even any ghosts at all. The atmosphere is so creepy, the actors are awesome, and it haven't aged one bit. To anyone who could read this comment, go watch it if you haven't yet, it's a masterpiece. And thank you Nostalgia Critic for making me discover one of the greatest creation the 7th Art has given us. Black and white movies rock.
PS : The remake is an insult to the original and every copy of it should be burning in the fire of Hell.
Among other films Robert Wise has under his belt: The Body Snatcher (1945), a wonderfully atmospheric horror drama featuring what might be Boris Karloff's best performance. So Wise, heaven bless him, showed some serious horror movie chops right out of the gate. Jan de Bont really had no IDEA whom he was messing with.
About to reread The Haunting of Hill House, the novel that both this film and the original The Haunting are based off. Thanks Nostalgia Critic for introducing me to one of my favorite Halloween reads!!!!!

The 2019 Lion King remake in a nutshell
Critic's Jan de Bont impersonation/freakout at the end will never cease to amaze.
I actually liked the Haunting it was a good thriller and I might be partial to my huge girl crush on Catherine Zeta Jones.....
Oh and side note there was actually supposed to be a love scene between Nell and Theo but got cut because they wanted to keep a PG-13 rating
Damn.
“black bloated beethoven bitch bucket” might just be the funniest thing Doug has ever said lol
Imagine if Critic found himself in a different world where this movie is played everywhere.
He'd go on a rampage...
I never saw the original because this came out when I was three years old but I loved this movie. I took it as Eleanor being isolated from society so long she never actually fully developed. She acts like a child at times and that creeped me out. She is awkward with sensuality or dating using Cleo as a sort of representation. She gets excited with being the center of attention and likes the house at some point. The professor is more like the sense of reason because she is clearly losing it. She sees scary stuff in the dark like the face in the room similar to when kids get scared in the dark. The Rembrandt concept was kinda cool but needed more exploring. Luke was literally comedic relief and shows Eleanor her version of "what men what." The group really didn't know that it was supernatural because they were skeptical since Eleanor is clearing not mentally well. The ending takes a strange turn and I can't explain that. But it seemed to be more about Eleanor confronting her demons since she was a passive, naive, socially awkward person. She stands up to ghost and becomes assertive but the ending was so strange. I feel like if they wanted to say Eleanor was the descendant then they needed more clues because it came out randomly. Also, if they played with Eleanor thinking the professor called her personally more that would have been cool. Like how the fuck would the professor have found Eleanor? She was a shut in taking care of her mother and she did not find that sus (like a child being too trusting with someone offering them candy). Anyway my rant is over and Catherine Zeta Jones was my first crush so I looked over the movie and also loved Entrapment too
