  • Philadelphia (colloquially known simply as Philly) is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the United States. It is the sixth-most-populous city in the United States and the most populous city in the state of Pennsylvania, with a 2020 population of 1,603,797.[6] It is also the second-most populous city in the Northeastern United States, behind New York City. Since 1854, the city has had the same geographic boundaries as Philadelphia County, the most-populous county in Pennsylvania and the urban core of the eighth-largest U.S. metropolitan statistical area, with over 6 million residents as of 2017.[9] Philadelphia is also the economic and cultural center of the greater Delaware Valley along the lower Delaware and Schuylkill rivers within the Northeast megalopolis. The Delaware Valley's 2019 estimated population of 7.21 million makes it the ninth-largest combined statistical area in the United States.[10]
Philadelphia is one of the oldest municipalities in the United States. William Penn, an English Quaker, founded the city in 1682 to serve as capital of the Pennsylvania Colony.[4][11] Philadelphia played an instrumental role in the American Revolution as a meeting place for the Founding Fathers of the United States, who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 at the Second Continental Congress, and the Constitution at the Philadelphia Convention of 1787. Several other key events occurred in Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War including the First Continental Congress, the preservation of the Liberty Bell, the Battle of Germantown, and the Siege of Fort Mifflin. Philadelphia remained the nation's largest city until being overtaken by New York City in 1790; the city was also one of the nation's capitals during the revolution, serving as temporary U.S. capital while Washington, D.C. was under construction.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Philadelphia became a major industrial center and a railroad hub. The city grew due to an influx of European immigrants, most of whom initially came from Ireland and Germany-the two largest reported ancestry groups in the city as of 2015. Later immigrant groups in the 20th century came from Italy (Italian being the third largest European ethnic ancestry currently reported in Philadelphia) and other Southern European and Eastern European countries.[12] In the early 20th century, Philadelphia became a prime destination for African Americans during the Great Migration after the Civil War.[13] Puerto Ricans began moving to the city in large numbers in the period between World War I and II, and in even greater numbers in the post-war period.[14] The city's population doubled from one million to two million people between 1890 and 1950.
The Philadelphia area's many universities and colleges make it a top study destination, as the city has evolved into an educational and economic hub.[15][16] As of 2019, the Philadelphia metropolitan area is estimated to produce a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of $490 billion.[17] Philadelphia is the center of economic activity in Pennsylvania and is home to five Fortune 1000 companies. The Philadelphia skyline is expanding, with a market of almost 81,900 commercial properties in 2016,[18] including several nationally prominent skyscrapers.[19] Philadelphia has more outdoor sculptures and murals than any other American city.[20][21] Fairmount Park, when combined with the adjacent Wissahickon Valley Park in the same watershed, is one of the largest contiguous urban park areas in the United States.[22] The city is known for its arts, culture, cuisine, and colonial history, attracting 42 million domestic tourists in 2016 who spent $6.8 billion, generating an estimated $11 billion in total economic impact in the city and surrounding four counties of Pennsylvania.[23] Philadelphia is also a biotechnology hub.[24]
Philadelphia is the home of many U.S. firsts, including the nation's first library (1731),[25] hospital (1751),[25] medical school (1765),[26] national capital (1774),[27] university (by some accounts) (1779),[28] stock exchange (1790),[25] zoo (1874),[29] and business school (1881).[30] Philadelphia contains 67 National Historic Landmarks and the World Heritage Site of Independence Hall.[31] The city became a member of the Organization of World Heritage Cities in 2015,[32] as the first World Heritage City in the United States.[16]

@@GEVINCHYGAMEZ 😂😂🤣🤣🤣 Atlanta!?? Sorry but that was the dumbest comment I've read this year. No sensible person would place Atlanta's skyline among the best skylines in the U.S! Sprawling is not good if it lacks density. Atlanta's skyline has a bunch of buildings that are widespread and almost looks miles apart. This is why it's not mentioned among the best skylines because what all great skylines have is DENSITY and Atlanta's skyline have NONE! Thanks for the laugh though! Philadelphia skyline is widely considered one of the best skylines to people with working eyes because it's not only easy to identify but it's very dense, probably one of the most dense in the country. The Schuylkill, Ben Franklin bridge, and 1600 European Architecture add it it's appeal too. NYC has density, but it's too widespread with a bunch of skinny tall ugly buildings. What makes Chicago the best is it's not just dense, but has the perfect amount of width which is necessary to give it a city look. A tall dense center core surrounded by smaller less dense buildings is what makes the perfect skyline. Atlanta doesn't have that, neither does NYC. Chicago and Philly does.🤦‍♀

A city that is considered a night sky friendly city? I really fail to see it. Quite much light pollution all over the city. Not that bad as in many other places, but night-friendly where light pollution is reduced to minimum as Pittsburgh always says? Nope, there is still a long fight to reduce all these excessive light.
11.41 PM here and 60 percent of the lights are totally useless. Too bad Pittburgh has got too many white LED streetlights. All the researches say that white and bluish LED (3200 K and plus) hovewer shileded they are are extremelly bad for light pollution by creating a LED bluish smog all over the city. A HPS lamp creates 4 times less pollution as one LED streetlights.
There is also useless light signage all over the city (OK in the evning, but totally useless after 10-11 PM) and too much building illumination. And all these light on top of many skyscrapers are extremely bad because it creates too much light pollution seen from every part of the city and also creates an LED light smog.
If Pittsburgh wants to be a certified night friendly city it should do at least 3 following steps.
    1. Minimizing cold color (4000K and plus) LED streetlighting. Major streets are 2700-3000 K LED and minor streets and residential areas 1800-2200K. Cold colors are no more than 10-15 percent of the totqal amount of street lights only because for diversity's sake and totally shielded and dimmed so that it doesn't blind.
2 Requiring buisnesses to turn off their light signage somewhat after 11 PM. Many European cities do it right now. This signage (totally useless because the buisness with this light signage on is almost close during this time.
3 Minimizing (or better getting rid altogether) of the buidling illumination, especially the tops of skyscrapers. They create a huge deal of light pollution. And also minimizing (or better also totally getting rid of of buidling illumination that is not static like rain drops and others (example at 10.52 which shows the time) and extremely pernicious building illumination (like that white beam all the heaight of a skyscaper at 5.25 at the right side). These roof illumination creates a huge deal of smoke.
Overall, I understand that some decorative lighting should be kept, but cannot we keep on until 10 mayb 11 PM (10 PM is better) and then just to switch it off for the night? The difference will be tremendous. And yes, Pittsburgh can keep excessive lighting all night long during public holidays and festive events.
I am so sick and tired of this extreme light pollution that the LED technology has broguth to the US and the whole world. Night as it used to be becomes a luxury and it's almost impossible to find even a semblance of night in any major US city because of extreme light pollution. There are a lot of reseraches that say that excessive light causes a whole bunch of diseases, but it's amazing that the US government does absolutely nothing to mitigate the perncious effects of light pollutions. It seems that all these articles and reseraches are in vain.
