- Marilynne Robinson is the recipient of a 2012 National Humanities Medal, awarded by President Barack Obama, for “her grace and intelligence in writing.” She is the author of Gilead, winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award, Home, winner of the Orange Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and Lila, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her first novel, Housekeeping, won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award. Robinson’s nonfiction books include The Givenness of Things, When I Was a Child I Read Books, Absence of Mind, The Death of Adam, and Mother Country, which was nominated for a National Book Award. She teaches at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop and lives in Iowa City.

Ezekiel 13: 3
They saw vanity and lying divination. They say, The Lord hath said, and the Lord did not send them; yet they expect him to confirm their word. Have you not seen a vain vision, and have you not told a lying divination, since you say, The Lord said, when I did not speak? Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you have spoken vanity, and have seen a lie, therefore, behold, I am against you, says the Lord God.
Ezekiel 13: 6-8
And you, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people who prophesy with their own heart, and prophesy against them, and say: Thus says the Lord God: Woe to those who sew magic bandages for all hands , and they make magic veils for the heads of all ages, to hunt souls! Are you to hunt down the souls of my people, to maintain your own life? And will you desecrate me among my people by handfuls of barley and by pieces of bread, killing the people who should not die, and giving life to the people who should not live, lying to my people who listen to the lie? Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against your magic bandages, with which you hunt souls in flight; I will free them from your hands, and let the souls that you hunt by flying fly like birds. I will also tear your magic veils, and I will deliver my people from your hand, and they will no longer be as prey in your hand; and you will know that I am Jehovah. Because you have saddened with lies the heart of the righteous, whom I have not saddened, and have strengthened the hands of the wicked, so that he does not turn from his evil way, encouraging him, therefore you will see no more vain vision, nor will you practice any more divination; and I will deliver my people out of your hand, and you will know that I am the Lord.
