I am assuming the " reached out to Disney" comment was probably more about them trying to see if Disney would take any legal action. Actually, the censored game isn't Doki Doki Panic. The character-select screen for Doki Doki Panic resembles a book. The stage-like one with the curtains was a SMB2 addition.
My guess is that it is not actually Doki Doki panic. It is probably one of the old ROM hacks that was made purely to be edgy and offensive like The Jungle Book ROM hack that was shown.

I've seen way worse images on the news and that wasn't censored at all, but look out, a pixel lol. Media can be weird sometimes. I am however European, so I am not sure if the censorship here is a little more different to let's say America in terms of television or 35 year old videogames. Lol I used to have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 . It was one of their smallest tablets. Like 8 inches. A lot of people thought it was a big phone.😅 And a lot of people think that Samsung and Pixel are the only Android devices. The Kindle is also an Android device. Just with a modified skin.
@@9Tailsfan mine wasn't a Kindle Fire, it was a Kindle 4, the only thing it did was read books. No backlight, no color, and a barely functioning "OS"... At some point apparently Amazon "updated" and made it so I couldn't even put books on it so it just became a somewhat more expensive glorified paper weight.

It’s really ridiculous how unknowingly parents and grandparents will get knockoff stuff. My mother (slightly older than the mom in this video) picked up a DVD case from the bargain bin at Big Lots (which was clearly a foreign knockoff) and confidently told me and my sisters, “hey look, Tarzan!”

Just last month I picked up an SNES mini from a Goodwill for $4.99. It didn't have the power cord or the controller, but I use the USB adapter for my Genesis mini and one of my Wii pro controllers with it and it works great. That was a heck of a find.

It looks like you can still get the official controllers at a decent price. Heck, if you manage to find an NES Mini for a similar price at a Goodwill, you can use those same controllers, even if it might ruin the "authenticity" a little.

Honestly it's easy to forget that the way the gaming industry works isn't common knowledge to non-gamers.
I worked at Walmart's electronics section for a while, and I still remember this one time an adult man came in to try and get a copy of GTA V for his OG XBox.
Back in 2018, I was in a Gamestop, someone came in asking for Dreamcast games and a Mario game on Xbox 360. In all fairness though, the person was in a wheelchair and was mentally handicapped I think. The people working there responded the best way I think to that person and suggesting Rayman as a close game to Mario on Xbox....

Well, I can give credit for a news article being made for the local news because it is a way to get Grandma and folks who aren't super tech savvy who watch the news to at least be aware that these sort of things exist. They may not fully understand, but at least they will be more careful around these sorts of things.

I get the feeling she's the type of person who did play videogames but kinda moved on with other hobbies, and thus isn't super knowledgeable on how to buy retro stuff on the internet.

40+ year old here.
Here's what happened. Younger x/older milennial women (80s kids) may have actually played these games when they were under 12. But keep in mind there was no internet yet, or any sense of what exactly was changed with some of these games. Most american children probably had never seen an untranslated japanese game. They didn't even really show those in gaming magazines at the time.
When these girls grew a little older, they met Chad in middle/high school and games were for nerds. Maybe they still played tetris occasionally. Later, in their LATE 20s (tick tick) they magically decided that gaming was cool again. Which is why everyone expects these "girl gamerz" to know all this stuff, and they often don't.
Anyway, that's why women like this one knew what Super Mario 2 was, but didn't get the memo about even comically low barrier of entry trivia like "mario 2 (us) -> doki doki panic (japan)." I don't think she was faking her knowledge of Mario 2. It's just deeper localization knowledge was something you'd only learn later in life post internet if you still had a personal interest in gaming as a hobby. So pre internet adolescence was her cut off for gaming knowledge from first hand experience.
I can't speak for the other generations, nor (disclaimer) am I talking 100% about every last x/mil woman (please don't @ me). The observation generally holds as a rule, and any genuine exceptions only serve to prove it by being exceptional. But sure, mileage may vary. Usually does.

No one in this news segment seems to be duped. The only confusion is the lady who came to the conclusion that SMB2 was altered to be more offensive but that's understandable given the number of other titles on the machine were. But you have to remember that grandma and grandpa are their target audience.

40+ guy here. I actually bought a knock-off NES Mini a couple years back from a pawn shop for $20. When I realized my mistake, I lmao'd and began going through the "640" games it had.
While the console wasn't in a box, a closer examination would have made it clear it wasn't an NES Mini. That's not going to be the case for everyone, especially considering how widespread the knock-off gaming market is these days. It's easy to assume adults of a certain age shouldn't fall for it, but that's also assuming that adults of a certain age were invested enough in games to know the difference. Imma cut this mom some slack on the purchase; the news report was a bit much, but she's right to be concerned about the content.
We don't even know if she was the one who had actually bought it since it said it was gifted to the kid. Someone else in the family could have bought it.
I don't think it was mentioned where it came from. She could have been scammed by an online seller if she bought it online and they had used the official product images to trick people into thinking they were getting the real thing.
And yeah. I think she wasn't wrong to be concerned about the content of the games. It feels like kids in the comments want an excuse to bash on an adult.

My parents bought knock off stuff before on Amazon for my nieces and nephew usually LEGO and action figure knockoffs and i have to constantly warn them about the stuff. A lot of it is targeting people who are doing last minute holiday shopping. Luckily they haven't done it with videogames.

My brother bought me one by accident for Christmas. I felt really bad for him because he was excited to get me something he thought I would truly enjoy, only to find out it was a knockoff product. Who buys videos game consoles on the street off of a table on a sidewalk? In the middle of winter.
IDK the mother seemed very reasonable, sure she bought a product the was obviously the wrong thing, but I don’t think she was angry at any one thing, more so trying to spread awareness to other parents considering buying Mini SNES for their kids, despite the fact that this is something the parents should’ve already been aware of.
To be less reactionary (hence why I don't have a a big social media presence). I think the presence of adult theamed ROM Hacks vs the original ones is probably the biggest thing I think not everyone will pick up on. I think most people know it is knockoff product, but being sold on official channels via Amazon and Walmart does mean there should had been some basic quality control and review.
