    Time for dad to get to work!! Make sure you have a great income BEFORE you have kids, it's ten times harder to go back to school etc with kids to care for.

    Stay at home Dad or Mom with a ton of debt? There are graveyard shift jobs that will help you out of debt. One spouse works at night and the other in the day.

    The caller doesn't seem too clear about the facts. . . he also doesn't seem too clear about his OWN responsibility and contribution to the mess. That, in turn, will affect his behavior moving forward, and in turn, his future. He doesn't seem to get it. So tragic with little ones in the house. Hopefully, he will find a way to change his habits and learn from Dave. At least for the sake of his children. . .

    When our kids were young, we worked different shifts to save on childcare costs. If forces you to work harder on your relationship but it’s worth it in the long run.

    Why people do this to themselves is beyond me. I'm no rich guy and believe me I've made my fair share of mistakes, but listening to some of these calls makes me feel good about my financial situation. Really sad people get this far gone before they start tackling the issues.

    I would advise anyone who is planning to go to Financial Peace to try to do so in person. Having attended one and helped with two others, having REAL people tell REAL stories helps. Also, one is not as likely to drift off in a real class and miss something.

    Another problem with this guy is he doesn’t listen. He keeps talking over Dave, trying to explain his situation. Perhaps it’s the phone delay but the guy needs to dig deep, man up and get a graveyard job while he continues to “figure this out.” I’m a dad of two and I work 60 hours a week. Be a man, a husband and father and take ownership. Stop overthinking homeboy.

      He knows. He’s embarrassed about it and trying to get ahead of the criticism. I agree though. Just work nights or evenings doing something and get out of debt asap. Figure out the rest after the debt is gone.

      I listened carefully after reading your comment. Maybe you should go back and listen again. No offense bro, but I don't think he was trying to talk over Dave. It probably is the delay.
      There's several times where he's being quiet and just listening.
      This is a very difficult situation that he's gotten himself into but, if he will attend Financial Peace University they will help him see the light at the end of the tunnel. I pray that he will.
      And for anyone else who hasn't been through, I highly recommend it. My wife and I have taught it twice and it is a wonderful experience both for the students and the teachers. Life-changing.

      Financially I have always made quite a bit more than my husband and neither of us could care less. It's not a competition, it's a marriage. But I do agree this guy should do much more, given their circumstances.

    Put three year old in day care and work 11am-7pm shift till he’s in school you can sleep in day wake up after their school and be a full time dad. Or be home in the day with three year old and wait tables 4-11pm once mom gets home.

    Discover is predatory.
    I had autopay full balance. They changed the due date to before the direct deposit was sent to them each month with no notice then started charging late fees EVERY month.
    100% purposeful abuse of a 20 year cardholder.
    I called them up and told them they weren't getting another dime, closed my bank account that had been autopaying and cut up the card. Never heard from them again (16 years ago)

    Normally I would side with a parent staying home and raising the children. But in this case they’ve dug too many holes. The children no doubt are feeling the stress. It would be healthier for the children if he went to work. Double their income and they can get out of it quicker. The only other option would be if they have enough equity in their home to pay off their debts. Sell it and start fresh.

      That aside, most women won’t admit this openly but we tend to have trouble respecting men that put us in the position of having to be the breadwinner. It’s kind of ingrained. We are biologically programmed to want to nurture our kids in a way that dads are not, so when the question of “who is going to stay at home with the kids” comes up, most women want the be in a relationship where it can be her.

      He probably was making 20-30k and got the judgment that was going to do wage garnishment so quit the working bc would not make anything by time paid childcare and got 25% garnished. Sounds like he is doing side hustles most likely for cash now to save from the garnishment.

    Seemed like a "no big deal" call at first. Collections on that old Discover Card debt with a tax "refund" didn't seem all too serious. But then the rest came out toward the end. They have car loans, mortgage? Worst of all... they have student loans? Geez. Good luck man.

      @@JV-uo7zz That's depends. I was stay at home landlord mom to my 3rd daughter. I had to work when my oldest 2 children were born because I was broke. I've worked 7 days a week to take care of my family. What was missing was income from dad.
      Families have to juggle what's best for the family and like Dave said, they need income. Would I have like to stay home with my babies? Definitely! But dad went from a spending issue to contributing nothing. This dad needs to find work....ASAP!! The kids can go to school. Here there are headstart programs for 3 year olds. All of my kids loved it. That frees up dad's time to go out and be the breadwinner that God intended him to be.

    The Great Dave Ramsey is wrong. Buffalo actually IS a cheap place to live. Plus they live in an even cheaper area outside the city. I do agree with Dave though that overall, it is an income problem and the husband needs to make more money.

      @@clarifyingquestions It’s both. The husband needs to make more money regardless, but it does help that they live in a cheap place to live. The average cost of living in the US is 100, while the cost of living in Buffalo is much lower, only 79.5. Dave erroneously said that Buffalo wasn’t a cheap place to live.

      You could fix your debt but he has an income problem not a spending problem. Fixing his income part may allow him to fix the debt over time but in his case cutting back will likely not help much.

    The roles have switched in their situation traditionally. This situation effects a lot because now he is at home taking care of the kids while his wife works. This could be a marriage issue as well. I have a friend going through this right now and I can’t help but to think your wife will slowly lose attraction to you because your not handling your business as a man.

      Depends on how you can leverage that loan. If YOU KNOW you can take out a loan on a car and be able to pay off that loan within a year of getting a job, THAT would be a good idea. If it is your first car, I am sure there is some wiggle room.

      Check out whiteboard finance on how to finance a car if you need a loan. But in general, you should always pay cash for a vehicle. Then save money to upgrade later down the road. Check out Car Wizard to determine which old car is a good buy. Avoid scammers, have the car inspected by a reputable mechanic before buying a car in 2022.

    I am all about moms staying home with kids, but in general am very skeptical of stay at home dads. I have just never known any men with any dignity that would even consider it, and the men I’ve known who have said they would consider it are the sort who would spend all day playing video games and leave all the housework for their wife to do when she gets home from her job. Obviously some SAHM are like this too, but in general women are much more conditioned from a young age to feel responsible for intensively nurturing kids and doing housework than men are.

      That's sexist and while it's in the minority, there are SAHDs who rock it and women who love being in the workforce AND are great parents. The problem with this caller is they're in so much debt that SAH is a luxury and a folly. Both parents need to be working to dig out of the hole they've dug. Keep your outdated theories to yourself.
