Persona 1 was not on the Game Boy, it was on the PS1. Also, not a spoiler, none of the Persona games are interconnected storywise except for 1 and 2 (Persona 2 is also split into two games, Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment), but thematically they are all connected (butterfly symbolism, Jungian psychology themes, similar play styles for 3, 4, and 5, the appearance of Igor and the Velvet Room, and some other things).

@@hiddenmaster6062 Not just that but each "world" is an allegory for the concept of the collective unconscious, another part of Jungian psychology. Persona 2 doesn't have a "world" but it does have the rumor system, where you can visit the Kuzunoha Detective Agency (from the Devil Summoner series, another part of the overall Megami Tensei series) to spread rumors that eventually come true. Maki's dream world represents, of course, what she imagines is a happier place for her to live instead of the real world, and the Sea of Souls located there is were every mind in the collective unconscious is located. Persona 2's rumor system is about how quickly rumors and half-truths run along in the public. Persona 3's Dark Hour is the general unawareness or denial of death as something that will happen to everyone. Persona 4's TV World is where people's Shadows are found, reflecting the parts of themselves that they do not want to show to others or do not accept as a part of who they are. Persona 5's Mataverse is where another form of Shadow comes into play, formed from one's own corruption of their heart.

It was on the Playstation 1 actually but yeah, it was from waaaay back XD
The writing for the Persona 1 and Persona 2 openings are quotes I believe. Not sure where the P2 one is from (I think it's some tragic play or romance novel or something) but the P1's 'I dreamt I was a butterfly' is from a famous Buddhist Koan (basically a 'riddle/poem designed to help others along the path to enlightenment') where the speaker questions that: If there is no functional difference between I and the butterfly in this dream then is there any functional difference between us in the waking world, between the waking world and the dream itself, and am I even 'I' to begin with?
Basically very 'What is reality?' kinda stuff. (Tempted to go into a full blah about how this meshes up with Buddhist philosophy as a whole but that's getting a bit off topic XD)
Anyway, said butterfly quote being famous in Japan is why a ton of anime and JRPGs use butterflies in association with dreams, illusions, enlightenment, etc as well as the more standard 'transformation' meaning they tend to symbolise everywhere.
And yeah, all those meanings fit with the Persona series really well so that's probably why the series loves to use butterfly motifs every game. The nature of the butterfly may shift per game (sometimes its a character, other times its just symbolism and one game it's pretty much just 'hi I'm a save point' but regardless its always there and always good to see~

Here is a brief explanation of what type of game Persona 3-5 and the spinoffs are.
So the first Persona 3 was first released for PS2 and they then upgraded it and re-launched it as Persona 3 Fes which has additional content and an extra story after about 3 months the game ended. Then came Persona 4 which is its own story unlike Persona 1 and 2. They then re-released Persona 3 and Persona 4 as portables for PSP, renamed Persona 3 Portable (P3P) and Persona 4 Golden, and added new features. P3P is the same story but they added a new route and main character which is the female protagonist (the mirror image of the opening symbolizes how it is the same story but different character routes and choices such as if you play the female character you can make social links and romance the male party members). Persona 4 Golden got the Persona 3 Fes treatment and got extra content and story. Then there were Persona Q and Persona Q2 which are chibified Persona characters in dungeon crawlers for the 3ds. Persona Q has the Persona 3 cast meet the Persona 4 cast or vice versa and you explore dungeons kinda like the Etrian Odyssey series. Persona Q2 is the Persona 5 cast meets the Persona 4, Persona 3 cast, and P3P female MC, also same gameplay as before. Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Ultimax are both Persona 4 turned into a fighting game like Street Fighter. Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight, Persona 4 Dancing All Night, and Persona 5 Dancing in Starlight are all dancing games with their respective remix soundtracks, gameplay is like the Miku games. Persona 5 was the long-awaited launch of the next Persona game and Persona 5 Royal is just like Persona 3 Fes and Persona 4 Golden, same game but additional new content. Persona 5 Scramble is a sequel story to Persona 5 but the gameplay was changed to a Dynasty Warrior gameplay. Persona 3 Reload is a complete remake of the Persona 3 game. Also finally, funny enough they left out Persona 5 Tactica which is the newest Persona 5 spinoff with its gameplay changed to a tactical RPG instead and the artwork changed to a more Western style.

    Persona game info:
Persona 1 and the two Persona 2 games (Innocent Sin and its sequel Eternal Punishment) I haven't played so I don't know a lot (apparently P2 is about the destructiveness of rumors? And the girl with chest hearts becomes the protagonist in Eternal Punishment?) but both of them are very Shin Megami Tensei-esc as the Persona series was still carving out its own identity when they were made, and virtually everyone I've met who's played them swears by the two Persona 2 games being some of the best stories in the series.
I believe they both were originally on the PS1 though there are remakes on the Portable. Kinda hoping they'll be remade again sometime shortly after P3 Reload sells well though before I play them myself.
Persona 3 was originally on the PS2 but it's had sooo many remakes now:
Persona 3 FES (also on the PS2), Persona 3 Portable (duh) and Persona 3 Reload coming out nowish.
In general P3 is centered around the themes of death, depression, and learning what makes life matter, with that great hip hop/rap alternating with pop music style.
    - *FES* specifically had a postgame bonus story called The Answer which starred Aigis (the blonde robot girl) and was very much themed around grief. Was very hit and miss with fans (personally I loved it and am sad it's not being included in Reload but ah well)
    - *P3P* specifically had a Girl MC mode and so far is the only Persona game where choosing a gender is a thing. Also some of the changed 'who you can befriend/date as a result of being a girl' options were extremely popular (and one very specific one could prevent the death of a fan favorite character) so again, sadness Reload isn't bring that back.
*Reload* is obviously the one to play since it's the newest and all but would highly recommend after playing it to check out the P3 stuff it doesn't have since well, never wrong to see more of characters you love right? Also might be fun to compare how the cutscenes hold up (not sure but from what I've seen it looks like Reload prefers to use CGI modeling for its Cutscenes as opposed to the original's anime ones and idk might be cool to compare which ones fit the tone more or something XD).
Persona 4 (also PS2) had its remake Persona 4 Golden come out on the PSP (I think you can play it on Steam now though). It's a little dated now but damn if it wasn't a great starting point for a lot of people.
P4's general themes are truth, lies, how media distorts stuff and acceptance. Also has murder mystery elements leading many fans to joke how it's the 'happiest game about murder they've ever played' XD
Persona 5 came on on the PS3 and its remake Persona 5 Royal is on a ton of consoles (and also Steam?) now. Royal heavily recommended over the original even if the original is still incredibly solid in its own right.
P5's themes are authority, corruption, justice and rebellion, with something of a phantom thief/noir aesthetic (the stealing makes total sense in context but is nigh impossible to explain easily outside of it X'D).
    And now Spin Off info!
Persona Q and Q2 are crossovers between Persona games (Q being between P3 and P4, while Q2 has the casts of 3, 4 and 5 all hanging out). PQ came out on the Nintendo DS I think and PQ2 was like, the VERY last game on the 3DS.
They're kinda notorious for the chibi art style, some unlucky characters being heavily flanderized for dubious comedy reasons and being 'minimally canon' (the plots take place 'out of time' and all the characters have their memories of the events erased afterwards to prevent continuity errors) but they do have a lot of really great character interactions you'd otherwise never see, the original plots are actually pretty good (if very focused on the 'characters of the day'), they periodically play up the 'if only these two could have met and helped each other' stuff and I'm like 90% sure that Rei of Persona Q is implied in Persona 4 Arena to be the unnamed 'mother' of the Anti Shadow Suppression Units (aka major niche lore!) so even if they're not 'required playing' I dearly love these games a ton and believe they are heavily undervalued by most fans.
-Also the HIKARI cutscene in PQ2 is the most bizaar bop and I wish more people I knew were as crazy about it as me-

The P4 Arena games are fighting game sequels to Persona 4 (both on the PS3) set roughly a year later and have them meeting some of the now older and wiser P3 cast for real this time.
They have solid plots actually (with Ultimax being Arena's sequel set the day after Arena's events) but they are tragically overlooked by fans, probably because they're a little old now and P4 Arena does that really annoying fighting game thing of having none of the routes being full canon so you have to play all of them to get bits of what is confirmed canon by the sequel (P4 Arena Ultimax on the other hand, thankfully just goes for 'P4 route' and 'P3 route' story modes with the P4 one being the official 'true ending', and the P3 one mostly being a really cool alternative scenario that shows off some really great character interactions XD).
Persona 4 Dancing was on either the Vita or the Portable (can't remember) and it had an alright plot that was let down a bit reused cutscenes and imagery.
The other Persona Dancing games are both mostly plotless fanservice and are on the PS4 and Vita.
Persona 5 Scramble is a 'Warriors style Hack and Slash' game for the Nintendo Switch that acts as a sequel to Persona 5 set about a year later and it's basically 'P5 cast have a fun road trip holiday around Japan and casually save the world (again) in the process'.
Very fun though much lighter in tone than the original Persona 5 and the music is an utter bop~ XD
And er, one game (and opening) you missed is Persona 5 Tactica on the Switch, another P5 sequel spinoff with strategy game mechanics. P5T is very much like the Q games in that it's all set within a central 'otherworld' location, the plot is all about the character of the day, and it has a very chibi art style but unlike the Q games there is no crossover, time travel, or memory erasure stuff so um. It's full canon as far as I know and while it doesn't bring a whole lot new to the table regarding the P5 cast or the series as a whole, the character of the day and the plot is VERY well written so. I like it! It's probably the most 'average/forgettable' Person spinoff for most people though~ XD
And yeah. That all was a lot but hope it helps you work out a fair bit more of what games to look out for and where to start. And thanks again for the fun reaction vid

Any ope ing with those three primary colors will be linked to the corresponding game. The newer looking Persona 1 and 2 openings are from those remakes.

About the Persona JoJo comparison, while Persona has some things kind of sort of like JoJo(if you squint), Persona is actually more based on Psychology. More specifically Doctor Jung Yung's Psychological Studies. That's where concepts like Personas, Shadows, the Collective Unconscious, the Archetypes ect. all came from. These are very prominent concepts in the Persona series.

    • @Ghostel3591

Hilariously it is still a valid comparison as Persona creator did admit he took inspiration from JoJo... And this similarity is the whole reason WHY Lotus Juice jumped on board with P3 because he LOVED how similar two are (and which in turn earned him a ticket to write music for anime adaptation of JoJo pt2 Battle Tendency)

These videos always miss out on Persona 5 Tactica! It's newer than the compilation video used, but not as new as Persona 3 Reload.
Also, given when Stands were introduced in Jojo, it's more accurate to say that Stands are like Personas rather than the other way around. Also funny that you paused trying to read Queen's name from the graffiti behind her when it shows the word "Queen" in a way more legible font like two frames later.
And, in case anyone cares: an android is a machine designed to look like a human (like Data from Star Trek). A cyborg is created using both robotic and organic parts (like in the Deus Ex video games) and may or may not look human.
