Cockroach vs. Hydraulic Press: Who Wins? | Deep Look

  • Do cockroaches -- those daring, disgusting disease vectors -- have anything at all to offer us? Scientists think so. They compressed American roaches with a hydraulic press, subjecting them to the force of 900 times their body weight. Don't worry (or do): They survived! How exactly do they do it?

DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
Cockroaches can cause asthma and allergies as they spread their saliva and poop around your home. But scientists think these daring, disgusting disease vectors have something more to offer us than salmonella. American roaches are one of the fastest insects on the planet. They’re also talented athletes, compressing their bodies while scurrying through incredibly tight cracks. The American cockroach can withstand compressive forces totaling over 900 times their body weight! Researchers are using what they’ve learned about roaches to build robots the size of insects, which can squeeze into places humans can’t - like piles of rubble left by major earthquakes or hurricanes. And maybe down the line, much smaller versions of these robots could even enter our bodies to perform life-saving tasks!
    ---+ Spider legs inspire researchers!
Biomechanist and roboticist Kaushik Jayaram (@JayaramKaushik), who worked with us on our cockroach episode, also finds inspiration in the creepy, crawly spider! Specifically spider joints! Check out his work with spiders and robots in this paper: doi.org/10.1002/aisy.202300181
    ---+ Pesticide resistant roaches?
Professor of Urban Entomology Chow-Yang Lee (@chowyanglee), of the University of California, Riverside, studies many critters who cohabitate with humans. He’s been looking into how certain populations of German roaches (Blattella germanica) consistently evade our pesticides. Read more here: academic.oup.com/jee/article/...

      Hello!
How long can these roaches stay in a “squished” state for? Are there any lasting negative health effects for sustained periods of compression?
Thank you very much in advance!

GREAT question @@chillpill1359 ! I didn't learn about sustained compression for the piece! They were testing for the upper limit of their compression ability from what I understand, not for duration...What I can say is that the roaches emerged from these trials in great shape! E.g. for that black and white video where the roach runs full speed into the wall. I asked Prof. Jayaram how much damage the move had caused 'em and he said they weren't harmed!? Boggles the mind!

    • @mimischiffman626

HI @@bpdsweetheart8074 ! OH! The world of cockroaches is broadddd! There are more than four thousand species of roaches! I talked to Prof. Chow-Yang Lee about them generally when starting to write the script. Most species of roaches are out there doing great work as decomposers, breaking down leaves on the forest floor and helping with carbon recycling. Just now I did some light searching on the world wide web and it looks like the wood cockroach is a decomposer-type. But they do live in proximity to humans in firewood and under shingles. Cool to learn about them. Thanks for sharing!!!

Well thats a thumbnail to win awards! I personally love cocktoaches because i keep lots of insect eating pets. The type I raise is way better than keeping crickets ... they are silent, smell way less awful, dont suffer from any diseases, cant climb smooth surfaces, and breed very easily with basically whatever you feed them. Also as a tropical species if any do escape they die pretty fast and they cant breed below 80f instead of getting a cricket chirping in your house for days. Gotta respect there little fellas.
Edit: to anyone curious the species I raise are called Blaptica Dubia. If you've got insectivore pets, or raise chickens, I highly recommend starting a small colony. You can produce hundreds in a 3'x2' plastic shoebox tub with a small heating mat and some air holes.

i never killed roaches before but when i learned they play vital parts in the ecosystem i knew why they were important to keep around. cockroaches are detritivores, which means they eat the dead and rotting materials that nobody else eats, like a clean-up crew. it’s still a good idea to make sure there’s not too many roaches in your house because of the bacterias they can carry, so make sure to keep all food in secure places where critters can’t reach! be very careful if you use poisons or other things to kill or deter roaches though, since roaches that carry the poison can be eaten by bigger animals who then are poisoned, then are eaten by even bigger animals who also get poisoned and so on and so forth.

It's okay, I think the tardigrades are way out in front. But I'm betting on the ants and the roaches to be in the running.

it's really only a few dozen species that infest homes and spread disease, most other cockroach species are just out in the wild minding their buisiness. some roaches are also kept as pets because they are relatively clean and easy to take care of
