  • In this video we will learn how to breathe the most efficient way possible for trombone playing.
    Even though this is for the trombone, it really can be applied to any wind or brass instrument or even singing.
    The main thing is to be relaxed and understand how our body works.
    We call that understanding body mapping. When we know how it works, we can use our body to its fullest potential on how to breathe properly
    The book I am talking about that helped me learn how to breathe better is called "The science of breath".
    Not only did this teach me how to breathe in real life better, this really helped me on how to breathe for the trombone.
    The amazing thing about breathing is that we can practice this on and off the instrument.
    If you are ever driving around, watching television or standing in line, you can practice these breathing techniques on how to breathe from your diaphragm.

      ABO_ HS7 no I won’t , you will value it more if you do some side work and save up for one. As a result of this disciple, it will actually make you a better musician. There are many rental programs out there and ways for you to make this happen

    Playing trombone saved my life! I'm an amateur and play lead in our community band. I play in a few other venues. A couple months ago during my annual physical my doctor mentioned how clear my lungs sounded at 65. A few weeks later I felt I'll and sure enough I was diagnosed with Covid. I really feel playing trombone has helped me avoid any major breathing issues. Only two days did I have a a little difficulty breathing. I'm still recovering but no major breathing issues.

      Saved my life too. I was super depressed, and the trombone was the only thing keeping me going. Then, joined the community band, which set me on the right path.

    Paul, thank you for posting this series of videos. I've been teaching multiple instruments for 42 years and your wisdom is definitely far beyond your chronological years. Especially your emphasis and the way you present proper breathing technique. It's identical to the style of martial arts that I've studied for many years, and although it is only a guess, your demeanor reminds me of someone who is studied the esoteric principles of the martial arts. There is such a tremendous parallel between music and martial arts, and most of it is all about breathing. Thank you, God bless you, and I look forward to more of your videos. Keep doing what you do, the world needs more instructors who put their soul into it the way you do.

    I've mistakenly thought that it's all about developing the upper range. My teacher (and yes I am on old guy!) pointed me towards filling my notes more. I've been working on music that uses more of the low register and the failures on my breathing have become strongly apparent. This video underlines the importance of getting the fundamentals right!

    I've been breathing exactly like this but I still can barely last 4 bars at 120bpm. And I'm a bass trombone player so it's even worse cause I need more air.

    I can’t hold notes for that long, how can I hold the notes for longer? I pretty much just run out of air too fast, and when I take another breath, it takes me too long to get a good breath.

    Take breath through the nose only, through the mouth only, or simultaneously? Or does it depend on the situation?

    • @keanadair
      @keanadair Před 4 lety +1

      Pb 207.2 I’ve always heard to breath threw the mouth because its much more efficient

    • @Pb-ij4ip
      @Pb-ij4ip Před 4 lety

      Kean Adair when I play that’s what I do instinctively but I’ve had someone else tell me to always breathe through the nose. From what I can gather, through the nose will help in maintaining the embouchure, but as you say, the mouth is much more efficient. At any rate I’ve become more comfortable with drawing air through the mouth.

    • @keanadair
      @keanadair Před 4 lety

      Pb 207.2 Yeah trust me all pros I’ve seen breathe from the mouth. The only time I’ve heard of breathing through the nose is when I was at a masterclass and they said that breathing from the nose is very relaxed and should be the same feel when you breathe from the mouth
