There are 1.5 million NGO's in this country, with another 500 thousand foundations, churches etc., so tell me what they do with all the fed funding, and donations they get? It doesn't seem like they are helping the homeless with the billions they take in here.

What about all the working homeless whose jobs don't pay enough to rent the crappiest apartment in the city where they work? DeSantis' plan is to round them up and move them to a location far from their job, far from public transportation, basically taking their ability to work from them. All homeless I know work.

The new law says that counties and cities MUST provide a designated place where the homeless can sleep, bathe, eat, and use the restroom and that place can not be on a bus bench, sidewalk, or under a bridge. Sounds like those who oppose the law would rather have the homeless be on the sidewalk, etc.,without those things.

@@xxxxMonkeyGirlxxxx I don't think it's a case of whether we want to pay more taxes or not. We WILL pay more taxes to have facilities for the homeless, among other, less humanitarian expenditures. We can't have it both ways. Either the homeless will be sleeping on the sidewalk in front of your house, or you will pay more in taxes to prevent them laying all over everywhere. It is not their fault. Most/many of them would much prefer to have stayed in their apartments, but can no longer afford even a room somewhere on disability or Social Security.

I donate monthly to our local charity that provides health care, clothing, food, Bible study and hair cuts for free. Provides counseling and assistance getting off drugs. But the homeless have chores and have to help out as well. They help them find housing and jobs. It’s sad but many of the ones that don’t utilize this just want to continue using drugs. Our mayor has banned panhandling at intersections bc so many accidents were occurring. I donate clothes also. We also have a tiny house village they are building for them.

Where are the churches, synagogues, houses of worship and pastors? We NO longer have leaders at churches that would step up and work with city governments to be a bridge to the homeless and also work with non-profits. We did not have this problem in the 50s 60s, 70s, 80s, yes housing has become expensive and rent, but at those times as well - because the Church was involved. Some churches provides meals, but what about a shelter with assistance form the cities. A true partnership to help those that REALLY want to help themselves. As @777sweet has noted there are several categories of homeless and I agree.
But is also the individual that is willing to MOVE out of this situation and note I can no longer live like this - I have seen many that JUST want to be VICTIMS and not get work, not get off the streets, ask for money, and some even have iPhones with a plan. It is NOT the government to solve your problems if for your to solve your own problems. Goverment is the last resort. There are some many resources in Florida I have seen them and use them for my elderly mother with no income and who is mentall ill. Some will refuse help and want to be homeless. I am not heartless for I know that other like the mental ill or the elderly might not be able to work and other accommodations need to be worked out. The problem can be solved if we work as a community but also the individual must say I need to put an effort to get out of this situation.

I mean there was always homeless but it does seem a lot worse than what it used to be. I mean we probably haven't seen homelessness like this quite some time. I wouldn't really know exactly the statistics but it seems like it's worse than it's been in decades.

In all fairness, many churches DO help in various ways in feeding, housing, outreach, vouchers, etc. as much as they can. They can only do what the congregation allows financially and helps plan for. Churches are just people. You and me. We don't need a church to help the homeless, and when greed is running rampant across our land, the churches are not exempt. Everyone looks for someone to blame, but it's the fault of business, industry, government, big and small landlords - everyone contributes to this. But even back in the day, there were homeless. There just were not as many. Get them big tents, and designate large areas for tent cities that are on a bus route to town. Have the tent cities serviced the same way we are serviced - with garbage/dumpster pickup, water sources, sanitation and safe food prep areas. People who have incomes can help pay their share, like rents. Just like campgrounds where campers pay to stay. I would like to see a "Homeless Sponsor Program" where individuals can be sponsored by anyone who wants to contribute monthly to their welfare. This money would go to the individual and some to the agency for needs. I would sponsor someone if there were such a program.

I have worked in homelessness for 25 years - I am liberal whatever the heck that means these days but practical and wise after years of working with homeless and homeless agencies- cities and states have the right to clamp down on street living. Living homeless has become a bit of a normative choice for many and a reason to not go back to family for others. There needs to be something to make it more difficult to living on the streets for long periods of time. There continues to be help in almost all counties in Florida - save some rural areas . No fan of DeSantis, but there is no unlimited right to sleep on the streets. I wish the article would report on how many vacancies at current shelters and programs there are - since they are typically 80% full - some more than others. Anyone that wants to get off the street can. Even the very mentally ill ones - there are programs. It is a county by county issue. Homelessness has and always will exist - but it need not be this crazy. There is so much the people and media and experts don't understand about homelessness. Most "homeless" are housed in housing called "shelters" which are little different than SRO or cramped SRO (single room only) - they get a lot of services but there have little privacy, so to speak, that is the real federal definition of homeless - housed without privacy. Talk to anyone's grandparents or parents about privacy, they will laugh. Only the last two generations and too many women (sorry but true) think unless you have your own bathroom - you should be defined as homeless.

Designate certain rest parking lots for overnight 8pm to 8am sleeping for those with cars that churches offer, set up case management tent city to help them set up care plan/progress etc away from public and helter skelter, set up separate program for families and singles. Theres options. Theres also cost effective appraoches. It does work.

What is insane about the U.S. government is that it’s so far in debt that every 100 days the interest payment on that debt is around 1.5 trillion. The government wants to enforce another 400 billion dollar in taxes in year 2025 will cause the official recession, higher unemployment, more evictions, poverty and homelessness. The government isn’t doing anything to fix the problems it’s responsible for.

Bottom line, its not up to the state or the public to care where the homeless go. It's not on the backs of tax payers to house them. That being said, Veterans are an exception to this rule to some degree. In the past law enforcement has always been the group left to manage law breakers. Somehow living in public spaces not built for living hasn't been illegal? Apply common sense...and do your job.

How ever it isn't burden to them when they alway get special preferences as they all do when breaking actual laws now they get to sleep without being seen by people that need a place to sleep.

Because I see a lot of people that are devoting these people toiletries that they would need and And blankets including food but they can't Really give them much else Like a shelter Cities need to start building more shelters than houses Apartment buildings and businesses Because I believe that the homeless shelter need is greater than that.
