  • Today Taylor from Jones Trolling Motors and Electronics talks about why he prefers to use an old school SD card to update Garmin units vs using the Garmin Active Captain system. Then he shows us how to update everything including the Live Scope system. Plus Michael Yoder walks us through some used inventory they have including Humminbird Hellix, Garmin and some Lowrance head units and lots of transducers and accessories.

    Nailed it! The EXACT reason I never use Active Captain. Download updates to an SD card and if you loose internet connectivity, no biggie you can scrap the download and start over, no harm done.

    Just updated using ActiveCaptain ,no issues. If i had seen this video sooner i probably would have used a sdcard but all good.

    Glad you did this video.
    Just ordered a new Phoenix and it’s loaded down with all Garmin. It’s what we have in our airplanes.
    Seems like Garmin updating is the simplest I have seen thus far.

      @@KenSmithFishing no sir. Our pilots haven’t come to us with any concerns.
      I think it’s just another thing the major airlines are using as a blame game rather than stating and addressing the obvious failures they and the government have created.

    Nice update. Maybe a video of your camera and editing process/software? That would be very interesting also

    Good video. I traveled to a new body of water and thought I had map issues so I did an active captain update that lasted hours and burned all the battery on my phone and the update failed. They did revert to the old version and worked. I got home called Garmin support and was able to do it in my driveway but have Wi-Fi at home Next time I’ll check before I travel and update as needed.

    Garmin"s update release system is not consumer friendly. When you download the series you need it includes the entire series of units. The update package is very large at > 3gb. Then you have to run an executable file to load the update to an sd card. Between the size of the file and running the executable it requires a good internet connection and some experience with exactable files. Their solution to the problems this presents is updating through active captain. The video touched on the challenges this can present.
    This is a carry over from the salt water market where you may have a boat running 4-6 units with some of them in remote locations, such as a fly bridge. It's a very dealer friendly system and works well but from a freshwater consumer market it's not the best.

    • @KenSmithFishing
      @KenSmithFishing  Před 2 lety

      Sounds like we need to do a part 1 to the video

    • @jamesw5836
      @jamesw5836 Před 2 lety

      You would need two "Part 1" videos since the Mac and PC file are handled in different ways 🙂
      I see why they do updates this way but for the average freshwater fisherman they don't have multiple units, on two different decks, that need updating. Most large boat owners also have their dealer maintain the boat and electronic systems. It would be much easier for most folks to download individual files for the units they have.

    After your done updating do you take out the SD card and erase update so card can be used for the next update?

    • @KenSmithFishing
      @KenSmithFishing  Před 2 lety

      Fred i reformat them all the time since I use same for GoPros, so yes they get erased

    Ken, I think you have to have an sd card, even when you are using active captain.
