    If you don't like cleaning, mopping and buffing( you'll learn), you won't like military lol. For most part if you joined the military because you Wanted to and not as a last resort, then the military will be the best thing you ever experience in your life and you will love it. I'll be leaving for BCT after I graduate college in a few months. I think that with the right mindset I can really make the most of my time in the military and gain a lot of great skills and behavioral habits. If it sucks, I'll embrace it and I'll be better for it. I think it all comes down to having/maintaining the right attitude.

    • @Wenchlock123
      @Wenchlock123 Před rokem

      Spent 8 years in two enlistments in the Army and probably did the whole mopping/buffing thing about as many times as I have fingers. You keep your personal area straight, make your bed and clean up after yourself and you'll be just fine. The myth of slaving on your hands and knees cleaning for all the years of your enlistment is greatly exaggerated. By the time you graduate your AIT, it is very much another job, with very cool benefits. And if you were smart and lucky and chose a good job specialty (MOS), the benefits start as soon as you graduate Basic and start AIT.

  • @Yellowshirtmann
    @Yellowshirtmann Před 3 lety +14

    It will especially be rough and a struggle if you are generally more introverted and anti-social as you'll be in situtations where you are heavily pressured to make friends and build bonds. This seems obvious as you need to be a team leader and communicate to each other but some people will go in wanting to be independent and solo lone wolfing their assignments but it won't work out like they prefer. It does get you out of your comfort zone and changes your personality a little bit and if you rather not be around people with your privacy out the window then the military will be a headache. Not to mention constant hazing if you arent much of a talker and keep to yourself. Being quiet is interpreted as a sign of disrespect even if that is not your intent.

    • @edgarhernandez4529
      @edgarhernandez4529 Před 2 lety +1

    You for got a very important one. Someone that is very big on family and family time. My husband hates the army. He missed our daughters birth, 1st halloween, 1st birthday etc. He is always gone on some kind of training like the field or even ntc. He has missed out on so much and is counting the days for his contract to end. He knows many other soldiers that hate it for the same reason and just aren't making it.

      In my experience, people who tried to have families in the military aged quickly and died young. I've already outlived several of my sergeants and peers. Sorry, but I 've seen it happen too many times. Some people say if you are an introvert you will have a tough time in the military. My observation is that the exact opposite is true.

  • @derekbanks453

    • @Wenchlock123
      @Wenchlock123 Před rokem

      The Army is what you make it. Making it in the Army is knowing how to make the best of whatever situation you are in. Some people hated duty A. I loved duty A. The difference? State of mind and attitude. Making it is completely up to you, not your duty station and "the leadership."

    Been in the 82nd Airborne since august 2020. Lots of motivation from these videos; quit smoking, started running more, keeping a steady 200 lbs (73”, 24 yrs) got lucky being on the line with great leadership and a great squad (mortars, so 6 dudes) sit ups are easy, running is getting hugely better, push-ups still suck, barely squared away but getting better. This damn intro brings back some memories 😂

    The greatest leaders are also the greatest followers. You are as strong as your weakest link. No greater feeling in the army as having the best squad, platoon, company, etc. A individual award is one tiny award an award for everyone success can add up to technically hundreds of awards in one because you’ve all prevailed. I remember when everyday was the best day of my life because I was one day closer to being the greatest version of myself.

I'm the opposite of these things now, but they definitely described me in the past. Its important to work on yourself and grow to become a better person, makes life a lot better for you and those around you. Its not about where you started but about where you end up and what you accomplished along the way.

      Combat arms train harder than POG jobs physically, as you might imagine. It can be difficult to stay in good shape after that long and avoid any serious injuries that would force you to retire, but it's definitely possible, and although statistically rare, there's still a lot of men and women that have worn the uniform for that long.

      hugo sanchez first of all, I graduated from basic a little more than a month ago and I was at ft sill, and depending on the battery you get, you time there will be fun, or, like mine, really really boring. On the language thing, if you are fluent enough, like you can hold a conversation, then you’ll be absolutely fine. You’ll find that a lot of soldiers aren’t native speakers and many cadre members aren’t native either. Even if you’re joining as a specialist it won’t matter much in IET anyway. Hope this helps :)

    The only thing which summarizes long term military career issues is three words, "Problems with authority". Selfishness and physical fitness are not main causes. However, one reality which is often unspoken once a person becomes the "person in charge" they will realize the military is not what seems to be. Hence, the "retirement cliff" at 20 years.

    Anyone who cares about themselves even _as_ much as the group, let alone more than the group, is the bane of everyone else's existence. Especially in Basic where it's most common for everyone to be punished because of what one guy did, who got caught before anyone could stop him. Never mind how much that hurts unit cohesion and teamwork on deployment, where he'll probably get someone else hurt or killed. You _have_ to be able to make the well-being of the guy next to you a higher priority than your own, and it makes them more liable to do the same in return.

      @@no-yq7ns The only people I saw go from Basic to E-5 where Kuwait students studying in California back when Iraq invaded Kuwait in '90-'91. US Army needed Arabic translators so these students who were studying abroad in the States joined the Army and did about two weeks of very basic-Basic and were immediately promoted to E-5.
      They were then assigned to Military Intelligence units and assisted interrogators (me) with interrogating Iraqi prisoners of war during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
      That was obviously a special situation. You don't just go straight to E-5 from basic by getting a good score on ASVAB. Hell, you can go to E-3 (private first class) if you have 30 college credits under your belt. That's about it.

      I wasnt in basic but I've know alot of Army guys like that. I've known 2 idiots who were in Strykers who would constantly kick doors down if they were locked. 1 of them had his landlord less then 5 minutes away and kicked his front door down when he locked his keys in rather then ask for the spare, then inexpertly rehung the door. The other guy I think was either discharged for it or nearly discharged after he got drunk and couldnt find his house in a neighborhood with identical houses so he kept opening doors and if they were locked he kicked them down. Both idiots were the "Delta Force wannabe" types.

    People overthink the military. For me it was just another job, that was more than another job. It was a job that provided free room and board, and a type of education that cannot be found anywhere else. It also provided a home and experiences overseas in Asia and Europe. And when the order came down to put my life on line and serve in war, that in my mind was time for my payback. Gladly done.
    Selfishness/Selflessness has nothing to do with succeeding in the military. When I joined I was 18, and being a typical 18-year-old, I only cared about two things: Myself, and getting myself laid.
    If you want to succeed you have to be able to go into "soldier mode" and take and follow orders. You have to be able to throw that mental switch and do whatever that sergeant or officer tells you, no matter what kind of POS that person is.
    If you can follow orders, you'll be just fine in the military. You don't have to be some kind of "patriot."
