Do you use primarily small wood or do you use coal ? I have a stove just like this that's dated in the late 1800s. I think it's 1885.

Ok so does this effectively just burn off the rust to stop it progressing? What is the differnce of doing this for exact same stove to say, using wire brush to remove rust and using stove polish?
It's called seasoning cast iron. The heat causes the iron to absorb the oils deep into it. As long as the oil is there, it will never rust again.
