When our one of our 8 granddaughters, got married this Summer, I gave them a Lemon tree and told them the story of how a lemon tree, is very much like a Relationship.
    Here’s what I told them:
“Make some lemonade to drink, sit down and talk out your problems. The Lemon tree has beautiful sweet flowers, long sharpe thorns and healthy fruits. Just like EVERY relationship.. just remember to take care of it.”
That lemon tree I grew for them, was big hit that day, with the added in STORY... I now I find this old song... PERFECT!

Me and my brothers grew up most of our very young years living with my mom at our grandmother's house.. She had a big beautiful lemon tree that I used to climb and hang out in as a kid.. We used to make fresh lemonade with freshly grown mint year after year from that beautiful tree.. After my grandmother passed away some gardeners over- pruned that lemon tree. It was so bad that it withered and died and when I found out it broke my heart remembering my grandmother's homemade Lemon Cake that she used to make from the lemons of that tree and all the memories.. This song is from back then in that era.. I loved it as a child and now it has even more meaning..

He had a CD with it and a few other classics on it, and every once in a while i remember it and come back to feel that sense of calm and nostalgia. Being half asleep, watching snow fly past the window while holding a cold pillow, not having any worries or stresses.. i miss being a child

My father used to have the vinyl with this song on it. I asked him to play this song so much. I was 5ish and liked the lemon tree part without realizing what the rest of the lyrics meant. Now, as an adult, Peter, Paul and Mary are favorites of mine because the worth and value of many of their lyrics and because of memories with my father. I cannot have natural children but my husband and I want to adopt and hope one day to sing and play these songs for our children. Hubby likes Peter, Paul and Mary, also.

There was an expression in the British Army of being lemoned. It meant being had over. You’ve been lemoned! I had a PP&M album with this song on it and it became a sort of anthem for us at 2 Sqn, 1 Div Signal Regiment as we seemed to have become lemoned on a regular basis. My PP&M greatest hits album was always on the turntable of my music centre even when not in the room.

…just finished picking all the lemons off our tree, then,we washed, halved and juiced them. We got a lot of juice! You have to add a sweetener to the juice so you can drink it. That’s when I remembered this song. I forgot the parallel in the song’s theme. But, yes, after all these years,it’s amazing how the brain can connect objects in our lives with art(songs) that we experience. Such a mellow tune out of the sixty’s, no auto tune or over production, just Peter Paul and Mary.

Lemon Tree is NOT an anti-Vietnam war song. First, the tune itself was written well before PPM's 1962 version. Second, in 1962 the Vietnam war had just begun for the USA. Third, PPM's tunes were simply great folk songs. They could not have predicted the war's horrific future.
Returning to the lesson of Lemon Tree. I was taken to a live PPM concert by my mother in 1962. I was mortified. Elvis Presley was singing tunes on KCBQ such as "Return to Sender" and I was in some folk singers' audience? Love never comes easy.

I have to say first hearing it now, I didn't like it. But I played it several more times and it's grown on me. Also the Trini Lopez version is good too. What led me to look up Lemon Tree was a reference in a Seinfeld episode 😀

My wife inspired me to this site and to play the song for our son. It was his first time to here Peter, Paul, and Mary. Meanwhile, I am formulating recipes for lemon custard ice cream, lemon pound cake, and lemon candies using fresh lemons my father-in-law grew and my wife and planning to plant numerous lemon trees around our home, though I may be able to interject a plum, a peach, or a satsuma in the midst of them all.

Music like this moves us, in ways that cleanse our souls and hearts. It was written out of passion, and love for humanity. No wonder why as I listen to it… I get shivers

If worldly knowledge is deemed to be worshipful, then study the Ancient Greek Philosophers...Know thyself

"Know thyself" (Greek: Γνῶθι σαυτόν, gnōthi sauton)[a] is a philosophical maxim which was inscribed upon the Temple of Apollo in the ancient Greek precinct of Delphi. The most well-known of the Delphic maxims, it has been quoted and analyzed by numerous authors throughout history, and has been given many different applications. Although traditionally attributed to the Seven Sages of Greece, or to the god Apollo himself, the inscription likely had its origin in a popular proverb.
Ion of Chios makes the earliest explicit allusion to the maxim in a fragment dating to the 5th century BC, though the philosopher Heraclitus, active towards the end of the previous century, may also have made reference to the maxim in his works. The principal meaning of the phrase in its original application was "know your limits" - either in the sense of knowing the extent of one's abilities, knowing one's place in the social scale, or knowing oneself to be mortal. In the 4th century BC, however, the maxim was drastically re-interpreted by Plato, who understood it to mean, broadly speaking, "know your soul".
In later writings on the subject, one common theme was that one could acquire knowledge of the self by studying the universe, or knowledge of the universe by studying the self. This was often explained in terms of the microcosm-macrocosm analogy, the idea that a human being is structurally similar to the cosmos. Another theme, which can be traced back to the Platonic Alcibiades I, is that one can only know oneself by observing other people.
Christian, Jewish and Islamic authors found various scriptural equivalents for the maxim, allowing them to discuss the topic of self-knowledge without reference to the pagan inscription. By the time of the Protestant Reformation, Christian theologians generally understood the maxim to enjoin, firstly, knowledge of the soul's origin in God, and secondly, knowledge of the sinfulness of human nature. In secular writings of the period, several new meanings emerged; among them, that "know thyself" was a command to study the physical properties of the human body.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, the maxim acquired several new associations. It was frequently quoted in German philosophy and literature, by authors such as Kant, Hegel and Goethe; it was cited as an analogue of "tat tvam asi" ("that thou art"), one of the "Great Sayings" of Hinduism; and it took on an important role in the developing discipline of psychoanalysis, where it was interpreted as an injunction to understand the unconscious mind. ..
