    To everyone saying Star Wars didn't deserve the award, think about it. No one remembers those other costumes. Many were simply a recreation of of historical outfits (you don't need to be overly imaginative for that) and one was Airport 77 - gimme a break. The Star Wars costumes on the other hand are iconic. Half the people on the planet can probably recognize Darth Vader and they were all very original.

      This is something that I 100% have to agree with. Like... there isn't much of a creative process when you have to re-create something that already exists. However, I can guarantee you at least 99% of all the costumes have to be made from scratch and that is a hell of a lot of work. Oh... these were truly more civilized days for the Oscars

    After recently traveling through Tunisia and visiting the Star Wars film locations it's easy to see where the costume inspiration came from. Headscarves are common dessert wear as are hooded capes and long tunics. The real imagination is Vader, storm troopers and the many characters. The lightsaber was actually an upcycled piece of camera equipment, pure genius!

      Nobody talks about Annie Hall any more except for the film that won over Star Wars. Star Wars, on the other hand is as iconic Mickey Mouse....in lives on to this day. CLEARLY, Star Wars WAS the MUCH better picture. :)

    • @Wired4Life2
      @Wired4Life2 Před 8 lety +5

      +Sammy Jenkis I agree. Though we mustn't deny that, even if you *like* Annie Hall more (and those people *do* exist), Star Wars is by-far the most well-made film of 1977. But Annie Hall is pretty great nonetheless. (Only when it's standing next to Star Wars does it kinda pale in comparison, both in scope as well as in historical significance.)
      For those knowledgeable about the Oscars, the actual perceived frontrunner that year was actually the deservedly forgotten The Turning Point (which hilariously ended up leaving the ceremony like Chewbacca at the end of Star Wars-empty-handed, despite 11 nominations). Annie Hall was a *MAJOR* upset that year, and since Star Wars (let's face it) was never going to win the top awards anyway, we should be thankful one of Woody Allen's best films did instead. (And mind you, I'd vote Star Wars for Picture and Director *EASILY*, but Annie Hall would be my 2nd choice...well, for Picture, I'd vote The Goodbye Girl as my 2nd choice, and for Director...Spielberg was nominated for Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, so that would've been my 2nd choice...but Annie Hall would be firmly on the bronze podium.)
      In the end, let's just be thankful (I write this comment on Thanksgiving day.) it won 6 competitively (Score, Sound, Art Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing-haha, Lucas' ex-wife Marcia has an Oscar and he doesn't XD-and of course Visual FX) and 1 specially for Ben Burtt.
