    Thank you much, Using PPK really helps because the NSRS points i have access to are out in the meddle of nowhere and people have had their bases get stolen. The secure locations typically have their LOS obstructed to where i need the rover to be. This will help a great deal, its so handy to have someone step though it for a sanity check.

    Hi Rami, thanks for taking the time to do this video, it saved me hours of trial and error. 1 question I have from your video: I do surveys in very remote areas in Africa where I have no known point for my base coordinates and no internet. How would you aproach this?
    should I just do a Point Averaging and use those coordinates for the base? Or not bother to fill in the base coordinates?
    Thanks a lot, love your channel

    My questions:
    1. Do you need to know the absolute position of the base station before hand (x, y and z) or you can place it anywhere?
    2. Do you need to place the base station at the same position for subsequent measurements?

    That's interesting to watch but there's something to keep in mind: RTK measures are not a reference to check same PPK measures precision. Both types of measures are using the same calculations, the only difference is when it happens (Real Time or Post Process). In the end, you did not find an error, but just a difference between 2 same measures.

    Great video! How would you deal with a situation in which you have no access to a 'known' point to set the base over, however? Assuming there's no NTRIP, internet nor a CORS network anywhere near.
    Obviously you could create a high absolute accuracy known point by logging and processing 12-24 hours worth of raw data. But this is obviously far from ideal nor practical during a project.
    Would you, for example, suggest to log the base location for a shorter period of time (1-2 hours) and therefore accept a reduced absolute accuracy instead (relative accuracy between base and rover should still be in the cm-range, correct)? Or would you for example input a 0,0,0 for the base's long/lat/height (or XYZ resp.) to create a local reference network for the rover instead. Assuming you'd set the base over the exact same point during future projects and provide with the same 0,0,0 base coordinates you'd expect to be able to create a relative accuracy between different data acquisition rounds in the order of a few centimeters too, right?

  • @itsjared
    @itsjared Před 2 lety +5

    Hey Rami, great vid. I know how much a pain it is to shoot these yourself. Had a question about logging the Base, you showed to log the base as a kinematic solution b/c the rover is moving... I thought, you'd want the base in static and the rover itself in kinematic.

    • @RamiTamimi
      @RamiTamimi  Před 2 lety +1

      Good question, this could be an entire lecture but I’ll try my best to explain it. Static observation only allows for a single receiver solution since we are logging data to achieve one position. Whereas kinematic observations are understood to be a dual receiver solution. Even through the base is stationary, it is known to be used for corrections, so we don’t need the additional utilities to have a static solution.

  • @Millsy.g
    @Millsy.g Před 2 lety

    So my only comment on this is your setup of the base. You had it set to kinematic mode. Which is fine for the rover. But you will see greater accuracy on the base with it set to static. Since it's not moving, the corrections will be able to know for sure that the 'movement' it calculates is wrong, and can more easily filter it out.

    There's something I still don't understand about PPK. When you captured the 3 points, you collected them for 10 seconds each. Are 10 seconds related to the proximity to the base? Is there a rule on how long I should manage each point depending on the distance between base and rover?

    Hi Rami, thanks for your video. If I am understanding. We have two options to make PPK. The first, is when we place the base in a unknown point, in this case, we configured the base in STATIC and CORRECTION OUTPUT ON, and 5hz. The rover, we configured in KINEMATIC, and CORRECTION OUTPUT OFF, AND CORRECTION INPUT ON. Right now I have saw your video, I know a new way to PPK but WIHT A KNOWN BASE, only for compare with RTK.
    Is it correct??
    I am a little confused in post process with Emlid Studio.
    When I make PPK with an unknown base, I post process as rover my base logs, and as base my cors logs (previously download), in static mode, and I obtain an unique point (my base) corrected. Finally, I go to Stop ang go and correct the others points.
    But, make sense process only my base in unknown point wiht my rover?? It is right??

    Between the RTK corrected #s and the PPK corrected #s, do we know for certain WHICH are more accurate? I'm a noob but am reading that PPK results are generally more precise than RTK when both are done correctly. Is this true? Thank you Professor!

    • @RamiTamimi
      @RamiTamimi  Před 2 lety

      Generally speaking, PPK is considered to have a higher accuracy because we have full control of the corrections. Now that’s not to say that RTK isn’t accurate, if a shot is fixed and has lower standard deviations, then it can be accepted as a baseline measurement to compare other measurements to it, just like we did here in this video.

  • @Chriscam2you
    @Chriscam2you Před 2 lety

    How do you proceed with PPK process if you don’t have a known point over which to set the base? Does this mean you can only achieve cm level accuracy relative to the base but inaccurate relative to the actual ground? Or is there an easy way to create an accurate known point in the field to then set the base over?

    • @Chriscam2you
      @Chriscam2you Před 2 lety +1

      I think I've answered this question for myself, Precise Point Positioning (PPP). I'm speaking hypothetically here about working in a remote location with no network connection, and no known point over which to setup the base. How can you establish an accurate known point to set the base over so that you can then proceed with your PPK survey and achieve absolute rather than relative accuracy? This link docs.emlid.com/reach/quickstart/ppp-logging/ explains how to record logs for Precise Point Positioning (PPP) and download them from Reach for working with your data in the PPP service such as NrCan CSRS-PPP service: webapp.csrs-scrs.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/geod/tools-outils/ppp.php To measure a PPP, you have to let the base log for several hours, at least 4, maybe as much as 24, but if there is no other 'known point' alternative and relative accuracy won't cut it, this is an option.

  • @skydeploy
    @skydeploy Před 2 lety +1

    Great video. Got a question for you.. I’m a drone data collection remote pilot, The company I work for wanted me to get a heap of random gcp over an area where we were doing lidar and photogrammetry.
    We used a topcon base and rover.
    My question is that topcon says to measure the length of one of the legs of the tripod to the base rather than the vertical height like you have. How would this work out it’s height? Over a known permanent survey marker?
    One leg could be sitting 1m underwater for all it knows. Have you seen this before?

      I honestly never heard of this. The instrument height is always the shortest point from the bottom of the device to the point it is occupying.

      @@RamiTamimi that was my thoughts as well. In the end they sent us the incorrect settings and didn’t have line of sight to the base so couldn’t collect any points.

      If you measure the length of a tripod leg and then apply Pythagoras, you will get the height of the tripod baseplate, but not the required antenna height. I would never do that. I keep a 2-metre dressmaker's tape with me to measure the antenna height directly if I need to [the antenna plane is usually marked on most units]. For field work, I have a tripod for the base station and a telescopic monopod for the rover, and I have their heights permanently entered into their respective GPS units. I long ago gave up using a surveyor's bipod; they are much too unwieldy in field situations.

      @@mjmcb1 ok, seems like a hassle to use Pythagoras when i could’ve just plumbed a measurement down.

      @@kizzjd9578 Sure is. It makes no sense to me. Either measure it directly with a tape or have the heights of base and rover permanently encoded in your GPS units.

    Hello sir,
    Height of PPK is ellipsoid height or Geoid ? Please Describe plz

      Any GNSS regardless of solution captures vertical data in ellipsoid height
