  • Today, we're going to review my favorite automatic knife ever, the Protech Magic (or 'Whiskers'), a knife with a fancy release mechanism, but which is really a simple thing done well.

    They listen to u evidently! I just got mine today and they took the white writing off the back n put it on the side of the handle by the blade which is way cleaner! They changed their warranty as well. Keep up the great work as always!

  • @The4cp
    @The4cp Před 6 lety +4

    The Buck 110 auto is just as like that. No one expects it to be an auto and it doesn't have to look like one. Add the back lock and it's a super enjoyable take on a classic.

    Such a well designed mechanism. It does my heart good.

  • @k-ozdragon
    @k-ozdragon Před 6 lety +5

    I hope you realize that automatic knives must be a certain thickness to make room for the spring mechanism. The spring sits in a cup inside the blade, so the blade has to be made a certain thickness to withstand this. Also, this particular knife is not very thick by comparison to other knives. Thinner stock is a also a moot point when considering the grind on this knife thins the blade down considerably from spine to edge. Also, ALL knife companies have warranties that state that disassembly voids the warranty. They do this to discourage people from taking apart the knife, which is a hassle. Trust me, I know. Worked at a knife shop for many years and constantly got knives in that customers took home, took apart, and couldn't put back together correctly. It's a massive pain in the ass and strain on resources for companies to reassemble knives that shipped with zero problems. lol also get use to that "chalky aluminum" feeling, cuz that's what hard coat anodizing feels like. Other companies who use thinner, cheaper anodizing will have smooth handles, but it's a thinner coating that's more easily scratched. Anodizing is making the aluminum porous. The more porous, the rougher it gets, but also the more scratch resistant.

  • @panzerfaust5119
    @panzerfaust5119 Před 6 lety

    Protechs are some of the best action switchblades out there.They fire hard and fast and they use great springs that are tough as nails.I owned a few and they were awesome.Thanks Nick for another great show.

  • @franksalem8580
    @franksalem8580 Před 6 lety +2

    I own two of these. One is as shown and the other in gray and they both give me a great deal of pleasure. You had me worried, Nick, when you spoke of the bad and the ugly but your final analysis was beautiful. I may be wrong but I don't think Protech would consider removing that plate to adjust the pivot as voiding the warranty. Great disassembly video and final review video. BTW, The Whiskers 2 is not a larger version of this knife but a remake of the original Whiskers knife with a scissors action scale release on the opposite end of the knife.

    If you push the bolster from the bottom, thumb is way to close to the blade, which is the way it deploys best. If you push on the bolster it squeezes the pivot and does not deploy as smooth or fast.

  • @thomaslanders1162
    @thomaslanders1162 Před 6 lety

    Protech makes some great designs, nice and simple..I love the blade and handle shape..Nitpicky on the negatives...
    In Boston, we have a 2.5" blade limit and no autos.. In a moment of insanity, I bought a foolish $400 BM LE OTF Infedel..
    I think the Protech is easily worth the $190.. Aluminum is lighter then titanium and plenty strong..I'm kicking myself again, thinking I could have bought 2 of these instead of the Infedel..
    Great review...

  • @alittleolder
    @alittleolder Před 6 lety

    I would be allowed to carry it since I live in Austria. Which is I think the only European country where autos are allowed but it's so hard to get US companies to ship them because they think it's illegal everywhere. This knife seems really nice and reasonably cheap. I will keep a look out for it. Thanks for the great review.
