The island of Martinique is a piece of France in the Caribbean, between Florida and South America. And of course, Savoir-vivre applies just as it does on the other side of the Atlantic, between the English Channel and the Mediterranean.
Jacky Pascault is the first and only man to cultivate mushrooms in the Caribbean. Everywhere else, they grow on artificially fertilised soil, but Jacky's Champignons Tropicaux flourish on sugar cane fibres.
Nicole Vilo tailors hats and dresses out of coconut palms. Of course, the catwalk for the models wearing her first collection is one of the countless dream beaches. The Martiniquais sail on boats they call Yole, which have no keel and are therefore difficult to navigate. The crew members hang over the water in breakneck fashion on long wooden poles. Just the job for Yole-boss Max' "problem kids": they not only learn complicated handling, but also team spirit.

1. No, it’s not a colony.
It is part of France. It just happens to be an island in the Carribbean and KM away. Martinique 🇲🇶 is an integral part, of the French Republic, located in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea,
2. So they speak French obviously and Martinican Creole although the dialect was frowned upon for longest time. Even Les Françaises came to their senses.
3. Distinctly French, Martinique offers a seductive mix of magnificent beaches, dramatic mountains, tropical gardens, and fascinating history. Fort-de-France is the main city and capital. Here, you can explore architectural attractions and learn about the island's pre-Columbian and colonial past at the city's museums.

The official currency is the Euro.
5. Martinique was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Apart from being captured by the British for three short periods, Martinique has otherwise been under French rule since 1635
6. Part of the archipelago of the Antilles, Martinique is located in the Caribbean Sea about 450 km (280 mi) northeast of the coast of South America-and about 700 km (435 mi) southeast of the Dominican Republic. It is directly north of St. Lucia, northwest of Barbados and south of Dominica.
7. Its economy is heavily dependent on tourism, limited agricultural production, and grant aid from mainland France. Historically, Martinique's economy relied on agriculture, notably sugar and bananas, but by the beginning of the 21st century this sector had dwindled considerably. Sugar production has declined, with most of the sugarcane now used for the production of rum.
8. Martinique is The “certified” rum capital of the world. Martinique has the best rum ever and we are not the only ones to know that! Martinique rums have been awarded the prestigious French designation “Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée”. It means that rums are carefully made in accordance with the highest standards of the AOC, the governing rules for rhum agricole production.
9. Tourism has become more important than agricultural exports as a source of foreign exchange. Most visitors come from mainland France, Canada and the USA. Roughly 16% of the total businesses on the island (some 6,000 companies) provide tourist-related services.
10. In 1887, the artist Paul Gauguin lived in Martinique. Gauguin painted the tropical landscape and the native women. The Paul Gauguin Interpretation Centre (former Gauguin Museum) is dedicated to his stay on the island.
11. Various films have been set or filmed on Martinique, notably To Have and Have Not (Bogart Becall) the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair,Concorde Affaire '79 and Sugar Cane Alley.

14. The northern end of the island catches most of the rainfall and is heavily forested, featuring species such as bamboo, mahogany, rosewood and locust.
The south is drier and because it is easier to travel to, and due to the many beaches and food facilities throughout this region, the south receives the bulk of the tourist traffic. The beaches from Pointe de Bout, through Diamant (which features right off the coast of Roche de Diamant), St. Luce, the department of St. Anne and down to Les Salines are popular.

@Liveral Studies Materials i think i know what you are asking, although Free Doc Nature didn't seem to! the main industry appears to be tourism, but the locals seem to have cornered that market. A place like this has such a small population, economy etc that its probably best to go there for a visit first, to see if your skills and background would fit with whatever vacancies they have. Hotels can be a great way to enter into an international travel worklife. You really have to do some research on this one!

I think the narrator is trying to make Martinique way way more french than it is really as if this island does not have it’s own culture coming from there and else where but France. Also Martinique is not a department of France but a Oversea Territorial Collectivity of the French Republic.
I am not sure about the island having the best beaches in the Whole of the Caribbean but a few are for sure in the top 5. As for women, Well I must agree 😀
Y MK- Martinique is a French Overseas Department, code is 97-2. It is entirely french! The people of the island has exactly the same rights like any other french citizen. And french culture is a blend of many, Brittany is different from Alsace, Corsica has nothing to do with north France...etc...and the creole culture of Martinique is part of the french culture.
The video does not show much about the island, if you want to know more you should do some researches.

I am not sure what you mean by "entirely french”. It is indeed part of the French Republic and does not govern itself but only administrate its budget as per French Law. Now my point was that the culture of Martinique isn’t just french but a mix of cultures from around the globe with a very Caribbean and french feel to it! I can’t see how it could be compared to Brittany, Alsace or Corsica.
French Guiana for example has got over 21 languages spoken by the population which has varied cultures and ethnicities from South America, The West Indies, Asia, Africa and Europe... These places are melting pots of ethnicities and cultures.

The french islands creole is made of more than 95% of french words, mostly words from the 17th and 18th centuries while no french speaker would understand not even one sentence from the Brittany or the "Basques" languages!😂😂😂!
Martinique and Guadeloupe were part of the french kingdom long before many other provinces in mainland France, It is entirely French so while you`re babbling about things that are light years from your reality even the french far right wing don`t deny that.
