- Asterix from Konami is a legit amazing arcade beat em up based on the graphic novel by the same name. You know when you hear Konami and beat em up in the same sentence (TNMT, The Simpsons Arcade) you are in for some retro gaming goodness!

Hello and welcome to "The Unported Playlist"
So we decided to extend this playlist from 10 games to does it even matter what the count is anymore? lol it's a lot! But doesn't retrogaming deserve it?
On this episode of Unported Playlist we are taking a look at Asterix from Konami. It's a legit amazing 16 bit beat em up from one of the kings of the arcade beat em up genre. Retrogaming never had it so good as it did when Konami was making beat em ups!

As someone who grew up with the comics, my dad had them all and watching the animated movies I really enjoyed the Asterix franchise. Can recommend catching up on the stories if you enjoyed this. As a kid I had the Asterix games on the Sega Master System which where also really good. at the end of last year a new Asterix game in the beatemup genre was released: Asterix & Obelix - Slap them All! which was released on PC and all console platforms
I def need to check out the media behind the game as I am wholly unaware of the franchise outside of the games
I agree, the Asterix comics are very funny. It´s basically an underdog story where the Roman empire never can defeat the last village of Gaul. The villagers have a magical brew that makes them super strong and there is a lot of physical humor where the Gaul's nonchalantly defeat the chanceless Romans. The albums generally reflect different modern day subjects in an amusing way.
Like many comics from the era there are occasional racial stereotypes, very unfortunate and it´s done due to lack of understanding, not out of spite. I can certainly recommend stories like Asterix at the Olympics and Asterix And The Chieftain´s Shield. I also remember liking the 70´s animated The Twelve Tasks of Asterix, not sure if still holds up though.
They do sound pretty entertaining. I need to seek some out
Asterix is one the greatest comics ever made. I am speaking as an American who loves many things foreign.
Beat 'em Ups work well for Asterix, but I could also see Asterix being made into a point-and-click adventure game in the vein of classics such as the "Monkey Island" series, "Beneath a Steel Sky" or "Broken Sword".
Oh 100% it would make a great point and click. Also you have some good taste in adventure games :)
Loved that game. They had it at my local arcade next to my HS. I used to spend my allowance on it. Not sure what you mean when you mention inappropriate content. I replayed it and didnt see anything. Its French after all, not american. They allow themselves to make fun of absolutely everyone.
Great videos,thx
It has one depiction that probably would not be considered great today. But otherwise 10/10 game for sure
I never played any of the games but I remember the Asterix comics very well.
A lot of people are commenting today saying they know the comic but not the game. That’s interesting to me :)
LOL, dude 1CC is One Credit Clear... :P I think this might be the third video where you mess it up. I think you've learned it one way and your brain will never change again! Another good video!
Oh 100%. It’s one of those things I said wrong once and it’s branded into my brain. Video Game Esoterica quirks. My wife laughs at me because I quite often say “maintmints” vs “maintenance”
Asterix is an absolute comic classic in France. The small gallish dudes kicking roman's legion ass... Not historically correct but super fun, especially thanks to the great Goscinny.
Obelix (a pun on obelisk) is enormous because he fall in the druid's magic potion as a baby. He is very sensitive about his size and anyone calling him fat.
Asterix (another pun, an asterix is * in french) is the small one, no special power but cunning.
Both usually end up drinking the druid's magic potion 😅 while kicking roman's ass.
It looks like different the different chapters are taken from different comic books (Egypt, Falballa etc.) - so if you know the comics you get it. I'm surprised that Konami even released this, since the potential audience is probably not that big.
There were many horrible games made from this licence, in part thanks to Infogrames, ...but I didn't know this one. Looks really fun, maybe a similar engine as the Simpsons one?
Yes it's from Konami so it's probably based on the same if not a similar tool and development set as The Simpsons
@@VideoGameEsoterica It looks really fun and I had zero idea it even existed. Thanks!
Happy to introduce you to it! Now go play and report back what you think :)
I'm from Italy and Asterix here is quite population too, isn't it ironic that we've never heard of this game while, according to the comments, many Americans have played it on their local arcades?
I wonder if this was even ever imported in Europe. I used to read videogames magazines back in the days and I don't remember to have read about this game.
Yes Americans know if as a game and Europeans don’t seem to know this game is around? So odd
(One credit clear.)
Great coverage of the obscure, and rare as always! I am consistently hyped when you drop a new video..
This game is obscure indeed. Despite Asterix being very popular In my country I've never seen this game on any arcade nor mentioned in any magazine, I was completely unaware of its existence.
Thanks! Makes me really happy :)
Wow really? Well now you know it exists...go play it!
Asterix has always been one of the biggest names in Europe, and also Germany especially where it is even way more popular than in its native France, alongside the other big names such as The Smurfs, Tintin and Lucky Luke. As one of France's biggest icons, there is also a theme park dedicated to it called the "Parc Asterix" located in Plaily. If the theme park does have the original arcade machine there as some other theme parks that I went to which have arcade machines, I can't really tell you, since I do live in Germany and it is very far away from where I am.
It's interesting that this is the one and only game, and the one and only entry in this massive European multimedia franchise that was not made in either France, or Germany, the UK or anywhere else in Europe, unlike everything else related to Asterix.
Being a Japanese-made game, I did check out the original Japanese version of the game out of curiousity, which, to my surprise, does not contain any Japanese speech or writing whatsoever, and like all the other versions, it's entirely in English and French (no German surprisingly despite Konami's European subsidiary being based entirely in (West) Germany, in which the game could have also had German text as well.).
Yes it’s interesting it’s clearly aimed at a western audience. Sometimes the Japanese versions of games are just the euro / American versions with diff title screens to denote what region they are for
Even as a kid I was into more serious stuff but I can tell Asterix was very popular for a while in Italy, with Christmas specials on TV and the likes. These days, I don't think so but I believe it's still very strong in French speaking countries. Last time I had heard about Asterix it was because somebody believed it had predicted Covid-19, lol. Pretty much like the Simpsons are told to have predicted everything.
LOL it predicted it? I have to Google this
Atari released the games Asterix and Obelix for the Atari 2600 in 1983 and both exist as NTSC games and were first party titles, so they weren't completely unknown in the USA.
I wonder where they were known. Like maybe regionally?
@@VideoGameEsoterica in the 80s, there were still quite a few regional TV channels that produced or simulcast their own programming. That is a strong possibility.
It’s funny how much the world has changed. There is basically no such thing as “regional entertainment” any more
The cut content: would it happen to be the black pirate?
It would be
I literally thought all asterix games were mediocre to bad. Never knew Konami did one and it looks better than them all. I used to get the comic books from my local library in England. Nice work, looking forward to the next one 😎
Yep there exists a GOOD Asterix game lol
Asterix on Master System is a decent game
I’ll have to check it out
@@zendar81 even better another to add to the list
My list is ever growing LOL
I remember Asterix the Gaul from when I was a little kid and our French teacher had us watch the animated movie and it was pretty old even then. Interesting that video games were made from that movie and comic series . I wonder how many people are familiar with it. This one looks like a lot of fun!
This one would def be deep cut status IMO
Some of the old animated movies have been remade in 3D. There are also live action movies (with Monica Bellucci in it).
I'm from Italy and here Asterix is quite popular, I've got the whole comic book series and every holiday season they air the movies on TV, they're considered classics.
I will have to check some out. I am curious just what they are about. Any one in particular youd recommend?
If you're talking about live movies, Astérix et Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre (2002) is considered the best.
The first one is also quite nice Astérix et Obélix contre César (1999). Note that it's Gerard Depardieu who plays Obelix.
And a new movie will be released in 2023 but with other actors.
If you're talking about animated movies, Les Douze travaux d'Astérix (1976), Astérix et Cléopâtre (1968), Astérix - Le Domaine des Dieux (2014) are classics.
I’ll check into them. Thanks for the list :)
It used to be a oretty popular IP here in the UK.
I used to read the books as a kid, And although I never saw this game back in the day I enjoyed playing it years later on MAME :D
Its funny...people in the US say they know the game but not the books. People this morning from Europe say they know the books...and not the game?! How did that even happen lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica god knows.
Licensing big wigs doing their finest work I guess 😂
LOL like the fact a special video I JUST uploaded for tomorrow got hit with a claim for 3 seconds of Mortal Kombat music, forcing me to rerender and re-upload. 3 seconds!
@@VideoGameEsoterica I dont miss that BS.
I de-monetised my channel 😂
LOL I need the $$ from ads to cover the amount I spend on the channel. Otherwise I’d be in a sea of red
The comics are easy to like they're very funny and the arts gorgeous. They've sold 380m+ books so it's far from an obscure licence it was the only comic I could get in libraries as a kid along with Tin Tin and maybe Lucky Luke.
380 million? DAMN
It's pretty obscure in the US (where franco-belgian comics never had much of a foothold), not so much in Canada though.
@@VideoGameEsoterica there's even an asterix theme park in france.
So funny how things are obscure in just certain spots
Great game! And if I remember correctly it's one of the cheaper arcade pcb's I own.
It’s def not nearly as coveted as the rest of Konami’s beat em up output and I’m sure the price reflects that (or at least used to. Everything is dumb expensive these days in retro gaming it seems)
1CC = 1 Credit Clear, btw. I think you've tended to say "1 Credit Continue"
And I always will Lolol. You know when you misremember something and say it incorrectly the rest of your life? That’s me with 1CC
I have this game in my collection. it’s one of funny’s game to play 😊
Nice. A rarer board too
@@VideoGameEsoterica yeah indeed
Def never sell it!
@@VideoGameEsoterica I collect allot of things 🙉 the problem is I don’t sell anything 🤣
hahaha you sound JUST like me
Hi, i liked to watch this one.
This is the Asterix EAD ?
EAD? sorry not sure what you mean
@@VideoGameEsoterica its a version of this game
Oh the region code. I see
😍
:)
French language, but Belgian in origin.
Fun lineage
No it's French, created in 1959 by French screenwriter René Goscinny and French cartoonist Albert Uderzo.
Where’s my shout out! Lol
LOL Thursday. You don’t get a shout out on non-MiSter video! And it’s a good shout out too...I thought long and hard about the joke
@@VideoGameEsoterica dude! Sounds awesome , can’t wait 😛
Haha you can’t be mad at me whatever I say ;)
@@VideoGameEsoterica lol I’m sure it’ll be clean and wholesome !
Oh you know it
What's with beating around the SJW bush? Tell us what you don't like. Do you find comedic stereotypes racist? Was animated Falbala to sexy for your taste? Was it "trans-phobia" or other imaginary non-problem? Obelix thought all non-Gauls are dumb, mocking typical french chauvinism. Asterix comic books were sneaking political and social satire constantly, most nations got their fair share of visual commentary. Animated movies were slightly more tamed but still funny. The german judoka from "Twelve Tasks" is such a perfect poke at their efficiency cliche, even thinking about it makes me chuckle every time.
I want people who watch my channel to feel welcome. On occasion there is a piece of content I think may make people feel uncomfortable. It’s rare but it happens. I’m here to help people have fun and I don’t want anything to get n the way of that :)
@@VideoGameEsoterica ignore the haters. Im gonna DL this! Never heard about it.
LOL don’t worry, doesn’t bother me. Nothing does really
Sometimes it's easier just leave these things out rather than have to pick a side of an argument that might be better addressed by someone else. The comic started in the 50's. They've tweaked the black slave caricatures to a degree in the newer print editions while not trying to pretend it didn't exist in the first place so there's probably a compromise and middle ground in there somewhere.
I guess to me if I cut a piece of content because of this reason I feel the need to own up to cutting it as I made the decision. It’s rare I even consider this as this is maybe just the second time in four years I’ve done it
Hey dude, did you delete my comment? if so...why??
What comment? I rarely if ever delete anything
@@VideoGameEsoterica I cant even quote my comment to you...i guess it's youtube auto deletion. Ridiculous!
Yes unless you said something terrible (which id remember LOL) it’s just the filter getting things. It does that
@@VideoGameEsoterica No I did not even use profanity. I just argued for leaving stuff in the video and giving context to the art depicted (i.e. explaining it was created in another era). I just think censoring art is always a bad idea.
And that’s fair. I’d agree with you 99% of the time. I’ll take a look at held comments later when I am in my office. Like I said the only comments I delete are ones that are horrible or ones that are spam (like actual spam. I get a lot haha)
Cool video. I wish you'd speak more clearly as I find it difficult to understand what you're saying
Sorry...just kinda the way I talk to be honest
@@VideoGameEsoterica i know man, it can be so difficult to change. But you seem to care about your videos, maybe that'll change in time too. Don't worry though, it was still a fun video!
that is me talking slower too lol. Just my thought process
