Would you please do a reaction video to Geoff Castallucci.cover of Sound Of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel. Geoff really knows how to reach deep down into your soul.
@@marshayoung9387 I cannot second this enough. Geoff's cover of Sound of Silence remains one of my absolute favorite songs.
@@marshayoung9387 This one is on my list for the future!
Cesar doesn't need a guitar. He IS the guitar
So happy you spoke on the “Mea Culpa” part, such a powerful and beautifully-choral excerpt, and explained the Latin words and meaning. I think you’re the only reactor that has really singled that out.
Oh, I really look forward to your analysis of Geoff’s solo work! That’s going to be a lot of fun!
Loved this reaction!!
Geoff was somewhat reluctant to do this because it’s so dark but of course he slayed it!
Voiceplay the only way this song is ok. Misogyny and racism, religious fanaticism and hypocrisy. Ugh.
Indeed, Geoff slew it.
@@karbebs I mean it's a villain song, it's not supposed to be sung from a good person's perspective. The song doesn't actually condone any of that, instead it's meant to showcase how toxic Frollo's mindset is.
@@quothslania you can have a villan song without any of that. That said, I understand it's a villan song.
@@karbebs Even bad guys can't believe things that you disagree with? Do you have bubble wrap on every corner in your house?
Another great discussion about VoicePlay's magical way of transforming a song. While I wouldn't listen to the original on a playlist, VoicePlay has earned a spot on mine. I keep finding new little gems with every listen.
I love how they put _bell_ tones in a Notre-Dame song
Think this might be your best Geoff-face yet!
I am so glad you are doing reaction and analysis. I always learn so much and would never skip the most important part. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
You are the best & most knowledgeable reactor so far. Plus you don't act silly ( for a nicer word ) & over dramatic antics like a few other reactors do. You sir are very pleasant to listen to. Thank you for another great reaction & analysis ❤
Always, always love your Voiceplay reactions- thank you! They just released Black Hole Sun.
Also, again, so thrilled that you go to the source first. Makes your analysis so much richer.
I am happy to have you again. To me, VoicePlay breaks Minister Frollo's character into the 4 singers - from Geoff who starts with his purer thoughts than others (who else am I better than). J None calls out for Maria to protect him, Eli with his basest desires, be mine or burn, Cesar in blaming God for this situation. Finally they collapse into one person, Geoff who finishes it off. I think this is stunning, mesmerizing, evil and absolutely unforgettable.
Really appreciate your discussion of the arrangements. VP is my favorite of the acapella groups, and it's because - I think - I'm mesmerized by the complexity of their arrangements. They just feel satisfying. But because I don't know much about music, I have a hard time figuring out why they're different and what they are doing. You made a couple of comments here that helped me clarify some things in my own mind. Thank you for that!
Up until the percussion drops, except during his solo, yes. Layne is singing bass.
He actually has the lowest natural chest voice of any of the vocal percussionists in the big name groups.
Additionally he is extreemly adept at suplementing with throat bass to cover parts too it really makes you do a doubletake sometimes with Jeff is on the main line and you are still hearing some really deep bass.
I once saw Geoff good naturedly complaining that Layne's arrangements often were challenging to do the lowest notes.
I always think of Geoff's wife and her hearing loss that he discusses in this video. Very serious considering they met while singing and performing together at Universal Studios. It would be a public service for you to discuss it I believe.
czcams.com/video/yD1W1geyaLY/video.htmlsi=SzNxMKJEloNXNf2P
Thank you for posting this link. It was very much worth watching--and unexpectedly fun as well!
They met while he was still in high school. His chorus teacher was Kathy's dad. Geoff made an IG post near Christmas, reflecting how he's spent every December with Kathy since he was 17. His first paid gig as a singer was in a Dickens Carolers group that Kathy was also in.
In the Hearing Loss video he shares a lot of pics. Brace yourself for the variety of hairstyles he's tried over the years, including frosted blond tips. 😊
Thank you for sharing the video.
What a wonderful way to start a new week :) Thank you very much for this amazing reaction/analysis and the Patreon who suggested this video! It’s so nice that you took the time to get to know the original composition and the context of its creation prior to your reaction - you’re the best, Sir! I’m excited that you’re enjoying VoicePlay’s arrangements and that you’re also curious to discover Geoff’s diversified solo work: it might mean that we have a higher likelihood to watch more of your outstanding videos analyzing their great work (I must admit that over here there is always a very satisfying display of bass face when Geoff goes down into the Earth core - I love it!)😁
I imagine I'll have quite a few more films to watch based on the VoicePlay recommendations I've received
Geoff's solo stuff will be gracing my channel in due course, I'm sure Have heard great things!
@@SirHairless Yes, VoicePlay does a lot of arrangements based on songs from film soundtracks😅But I hope you won’t put too much pressure on yourself to watch all films in order to prepare your reactions because you always have plenty of interesting things to discuss from each song you analyze, even when isolated from the original context… So, please, only watch the full films that are of your interest and if you have enough free time. We don’t want to see you becoming exhausted due to extra work on the channel. Thanks again, big hug and take good care of yourself😊
@@Maria...-mo5qm Haha yes that might be a bit when it gets to the medleys (if it's a medley using things from multiple films)
I get a bit dizzy following you tracking them as you watch their videos. It's what happens and causes multiple viewings to catch it all and you are brilliant at this. I feel very fortunate to have found your channel. I'll be watching for more😍🌟😁
Love your commentary. Really adds to the understanding of their choices.
I really like that you're doing some research into the original songs that are being covered - I know some reactors don't want to do that to avoid "contaminating" their reaction, but I think it makes a reaction a lot more interesting when the reactor can compare between the original and the song as it is being covered currently. I hope you don't get any negative feedback about it, and that you continue to do that research.
VoicePlay have done an excerpt from Hellfire several years ago in one of their Disney medleys, with Geoff singing Frollo's part as he did here. He resisted doing the full song for a while, as he didn't like the character and felt it was a very dark song (and he wasn't wrong in any of that!). But Layne apparently convinced him to do the song - and of course, Geoff absolutely nailed it!
I still have some trouble believing that this song came out of a Disney animated "children's" movie from more than 25 years ago - it is just SOOO much darker (perhaps because it's more realistic) than any of their other villain songs.
While Geoff's ending notes are relatively high for a bass singer (IMO), he's still got a way to go before he hits his upper range limit (at least, so far!), which he did in a VoicePlay mini/short of "Peaches" from the Mario Bros. movie. I believe it's an A5 (perhaps A#5?). Yes, it's a rock-tenor scream, but still pretty darned amazing!
Speaking of VoicePlay shorts, that is something you might consider - since the shorts are all only about a minute long, and don't cover the entire song, you might be able to go through several of them at a time, and see how their changing lineup affects their sound.
It was an A#5. They announced that he could now sing that high at the beginning.
Also, Geoff was singing all those high notes in chest voice. Even though he uses subharmonics for the really low notes most of this song is sung in chest voice.
As for his subharmonics he holds a Bb0 for 4 slow measures at the beginning of Valhalla Calling. That would be a great one for you to analyze.
Love your analysis in all of your reactions I’ve watched. And I really like how you compare it to the original.
And I agree with all of the comments I’ve read. But no one has mentioned your easy to listen to voice and super cool accent. 😎
Thanks! I think it's near-imperative to know at least some of the context beforehand...at least if really wanting to know the *why*sWhy each musical decision was made etc
Apparently this song nearly resulted in the film not being suitable for kids and receiving an age restriction!
Oo shorts could be a good idea - they've not been recommended to me before
I'd recommend their Wicked Medley. I think you'd really enjoy it, to me it's probably the best arranged song Voiceplay has ever put out. It apparently took Geoff over three years to complete the arrangement, and I think it's one of their most underrated songs, barnone.
Agree that one never seems to get much love but it is so complex. The transitions are almost magical.
This was another awesome analysis of a great cover by VP - incredible arrangement by Layne, plus a cameo by Tony Wakim (ex-VP baritone, and co-owner of Pattycake productions with Layne, where many of their videos are filmed!) as the Guard - although the voice was actually Eli's (he does a lot of voice acting as well as VP!). Can't wait to see your breakdown of their version of 'In The Hall Of The Mountain King' , featuring Elizabeth Garozzo..!
I always look forward to your reaction and analysis of VoicePlay! I am eager to hear your reaction of Geoffs solo work! Thank you!❤
My introduction to Geoff was "Sixteen Tons" which is a good place to start, but my favorite of his solo pieces is "Blackbird" closely followed by "Ain't No Sunshine"
VP and your analysis… 👍☺️☺️
Always love your analyses! Geoff can, in fact, go much higher than that 😉. Layne arranged this one and finally convinced Geoff to do it. So many more very VARIED genre songs to go. Thanks again 🌹🕊
Thank you! I really like your way of analyzing the song.
😊👍
This is such a fantastic interpretation of the original. So moody and haunting.
I can’t wait for you to get to their Wicked Medley, which Geoff arranged. He apparently spent years on it and it shows. It’s absolutely phenomenal (and features two of their female collaborators!). And whenever you get in the mood for some breathtaking 5-part harmony, I strongly recommend Home Free’s cover of Brothers in Arms. It’s stunning.
Helplessly Hoping is also a great display of Home Free’s choral work too.
@@MaKettle111He already did that one 😊
Voice Play & Home Free are the absolute best ever.
I love the fact you do your homework on the original, so you can comment on the arrangement too 😊❤
So many years ago (oh, so many), while still in high school, I took a college music class in which I learned a bit of the "mathematical" part of music and I loved it. I could read music and played the piano (like paint by numbers), but I didn't know about chords, major or minor, or any of the rest of it. I wish I had stuck with it, but medicine took too much of my brain at that point. BUT, I so love all of the technical info you dish out. Lifelong learner here, I'm hooked.
SH, I've watched your video a couple more times and I have to say you're something else! VP are so good in this but how do you know / hear / detect all the subtlelties and then put them into words for us?? 😮 It is a mystery to me and it must take you a lot of time...Very impressive indeed! 👏 👌💫
This is one of my favorites. I love that camera zoom out! And I maintain that Geoff is responsible for more facial expressions than any other singer on Earth! And when you do his solo stuff, you'll get an even better introduction to Geoff's range. Yes, Layne can do bass, so can J. None and even Eli. None of these guys are a one trick pony!💙
The "Bass" face is a great face! LOL This one is a real eye opener for Geoff's range! There is one other song they do where he goes super high after being in the basement. Someone can help me remember here, I'm sure. I had a feeling that the "church-y" stuff would attract your attention. It's a throw back to my choir days. I found it easy to hear and love that part of this song. Thanks for the detailed reaction/comparison.
You are probably thinking of Oogie Boogie’s Song but he does it in others as well. I can think of a few VP covers where he is both super low and super high. Queen in 5 Minutes, Little Mermaid Medley, Peaches, The Grinch. I’m sure there are more 😅
I so look forward to your reaction/analysis. This cover brought 4 generations of VoicePlay baritones together in one video, Layne, Tony (played the bearer of bad news which was actually vocalized by Eli), J.None and Cesar. Now, if they could get Tony to sing in one again... Common Tony!!! Thanks for such a great R/A, really enjoyed it!
BTW, Layne can do bass/beatboxing at the same time, not sure if he did it here, but he talked about it some in the interview by Peter Barber.
Great analysis! Yes, it’s Layne singing the bass in the beginning, until ”Burn it”, after that Layne starts beatboxing and Geoff is multi tracked on bass line and lead.
Great analysis!
Great BASS FACE!!! That's by far the most detailed reaction and analysis to VoicePlay's version of Hellfire. I've now watched Hellfire at least 50 times and watched dozens of reactions and you've easily pointed out dozens of new pieces of information previously unknown (big/small, archaic/modern, major/minor, Latin/English, lust/damnation, choir/soloist). Love how you relate sections of VoicePlay's version compared directly against the original. Nobody else does that. Absolutely love your analysis where you don't just comment that you love a section (like most reactors do), but you break it down to the fundamentals. Such an entertaining reaction. Looking forward to your reaction to Hoist The Colours and Black Hole Sun. Just more spectacular VoicePlay releases!
Haha thanks for recommending it! This VP journey is off to a cracking start
This was interesting. Much darker than I'm used to from Voice Play. Great reaction
Whenever I listen to one of your reactions/analysis videos, a lot of it goes over my head because I have no musical training but I pick up a little more each time. It really helps when you show some of what you’re talking about on the piano keyboard. When I do learn something new it adds to my appreciation of the piece.
A few things I’ve caught: I listened to the karaoke track, and discovered that they used more Latin from the Catholic mass as background. It is difficult to catch during the performance because usually everybody’s so caught up with Geoff’s vocals. When you mentioned Layne’s percussion during the spoken portion, the others were chanting “gyp-sy es-caped” with that same percussive beat.
In the outro you can really hear that doom doom doom doom that is in the beginning of this song and it always reminds me of bells tolling which is appropriate since the piece is centered around the cathedral of Notre Dame.
Really like when you identify a group / artist’s musical signature.
Especially in comparison to another piece. Like here, comparing to the song in the movie.
Really enjoyed your reaction and analysis to this arrangement. Looking forward to more VoicePlay and Geoff solo work. It seems all of the members of VoicePlay have impressive ranges. You’ll find that most of the times Geoff shows his crazy wide range are on arrangements done by Layne.
There also is a fantastic cover of this song out there by Tomi P. With fanominal harmonies. He’s part of the Bass Gang witch is also absolutely worth checking out and there also is a third version by Collum McGinnes who has one of the most unik voices I’ve ever heard.
I really enjoy your analysis of the music. You manage to hear all the cool little nuances and really appreciate them. You also have a great "this is awesome and how much lower can he sing" stank face!❤😅 Keep doing your thing and we'll keep watching.
This was one I suggested for you to react to. Didn't disappoint. Love how you break it down and point out what they are doing to make their arrangements so amazing. FYI Caesar did the guitar solo with a little vocal distortion help 😁🥰🥰
if you want to hear geoff in a higehr register, I highly recommend voiceplay's queen in 5 minutes medley, as well as the fact that that cover by them is just insane regardless of how high geoff ends up
Aweseome reaction, thank you. I loved the part about rythm introducing stability or the opposite just in the sense of an underlying current that transmits information to us without us even noticing.
Did not know the song before (had to check it out after listening to Voiceplay's version), but it grew on my in time. I think Voiceplay did a great job here.
Your reactions are the best! ❤
Yes!! I was hoping he'd get to this one soon!
I'm always looking forward to your Voiceplay reactions, i learn so nuch. Keep them coming

I loooove your smart presentation and analysis Sir Hairless!! So clever! You open new worlds to me, it's quite astonishing! Bravo and thank you! 🙏🙏🙏❤
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed
Hola desde Argentina... Siiiii!!!! Investiga el asombroso mundo de Geoff en su canal!!! Me encantan tus reacciones... Uno aprende mucho!... Gracias y... Un abrazo a la distancia 😊
I learn so much from your reactions, thank you! A couple of my fav VoicePlay songs (Its hard to pick just one) are Hide and Seek (Ding Dong!) feat Lauren Paley & Whiskey In The Jar - feat Omar Cardona. I'd love to see your reactions to those 😉😊
Love your technical analysis, i actually learn quite a bit!
Brilliant analysis as usual. Thank you.
You always point out something new. Thanks!
Fantastic reaction and analysis! I liked how in depth you were and from that was able to pick up on things I missed from other listens to this.
I love your highly technical reviews. Also looking forward to your coverage of Geoff's solo work.
The music during the patron thanks is usually but not always, from the karaoke version they give to the patrons. It is cool to hear just the background.
I have probably said this before but you help make music theory a little more approachable and I am envious we didn't have resources like this when I was a struggling voice student attempting not to have a nervous breakdown :) You really just seem to love the music and your facial expressions take us on the journey with you.
Thank you, happy to hear it
I don't know if you've listened to their "If I Were A Rich Man/Woman" yet, but if you haven't, I would strongly encourage you to give that a listen. Geoff has a five octave range, and you can hear him go quite high near the end of that performance.
If you're interested in getting a feel for his upper range, that's a good one. Also any of his solo pieces are good, too. He sings ALL the parts in those pieces, and he covers his bass range all the way up to high tenor in those. And of course, his solo work is just wonderful on it's own already, too. :)
All of VoicePlay are amazing vocalists. They really are.
Thank you, sir. ❤
Always enjoy your reactions and analysis... 😊
Sir , you are so amazing how you catch every little movement in the cords and mood change. You’re delightful to listen to and learn from. I’m so glad you’ve decided to share your musical abilities with so many who love to hear intelligent analysis. Some time would you share your own story with your fans? Thank you for giving of yourself to deepen the appreciation of music in so many genres 😁❣️
Thank you In general, I do prefer to keep info about myself private. But I might do a Q&A in the future at some point if there's enough demand for it - guess we'll see! Feel free to ask any questions in the mean time though, worst that can happen is I say I'd rather not answer
Love voice play and your reqction/analysis!
Love, love, love your expertise! Thank you!
One of the things I like most is learning, and you offer me a chance to do so in a way that enhances my enjoyment of the music you analyse. Thank you for that. 🙂
I'm so curious to watch you analyse some of Geoff's solo works... Just about an hour ago I was watching for the 100th time his latest "full length video" release, "Unshaken", which kind of showcases the insane width of his range. But I'd also love to hear your analysis of his two covers of songs from "The Hobbit", which are, in chronological order, "Far over the Misty Mountains cold" and "I see fire"... I'm really in love with those two songs, maybe for being a huge Tolkien fan (the books.... Not the movies).
Thank you for analysing this one, and see you next time! 🙂
Thank you 🙏🏽 Maybe one of the songs you suggested is scheduled for a few weeks' time Guess you'll need to wait and see!
Thank you for your reaction and analysis of this incredible piece. I appreciate what I learn from you!

Just subscribed. I've been enjoying your in depth analysis for a while now. Looking forward to hearing more from you.
Thanks and welcome!
Beautiful.
Gotta love Voiceplay.
OH MAN I'm always left wanting more.
By the way Geoff can sing way higher than that. Oogie Boogie song is one of the best examples when it comes with the range he displays.
He showcases his range best in the solo pieces, where he sings all the parts.
Looking forward to getting round to Oogie Boogie
@@SirHairless I can't wait much more hahaha, to be honest I can never wait for most your videos T:T
@@guadalupejazminvilaguillen4786 Haha! Dw, Oogie Boogie has been requested specifically so it is already booked in for about a month's time
They are always so impressive, but this one gave me chills. (The raven hair line... Oooh).
I have had VP’s “Hellfire” stuck in my head for a week. So ready for this!
The background 'Kyrie Eleison' have become my favorite part of this arrangement. Full body chills every time.
enjoyed!
❤️
I'm pretty sure Geoff is doubled for some of the bass line, but I also think Layne is doing some of it via ingressive phonation (like when he says 'Burn it'). It's hard to figure out exactly who is doing what in this one. They frequently will double Geoff when he is singing lead (and others too)
I'd love to see you analyze Voctave's "You Will Be Found" from Dear Evan Hansen, their Disney Princess Medley, or their Heroes and Villains Medley
Happy Monday! VoicePlay does the best Halloween releases.
Thank you for your reaction videos...I've come to look forward to them when they drop! Have you heard Tomi P's version of this song? Totally different vibe - in a style/arrangement I prefer - and it seems to better fit the song's lyrics/emotions. Tomi sings it as a one-person cover (though it would be cool to hear the Bass Gang do this too).
Your analyses are terrific, and like others have said, I learn a lot! I’d love for you to take on one of their quieter songs, like “In My Room,” a song that never grabbed me until they covered it.
If you don't mind reacting to the shorter voiceplay minis. Geoff I believe Geoff hits his highest note in their cover of peaches.
Thanks for that - you are always informative and entertaining! Can I suggest you try a Geoff solo song from his own channel? Perhaps _I_ _See_ _Fire?_
Thanks! And for the recommendation
Next, "To the Hellfire" by Lorna Shore :)
Hell fire, hell fire... turning me to sin... And i Love it
❤❤❤❤❤
I love your analysis. Please review/react to their cover of Sleeping In the Cold Below and Black Hole Sun, thank you.
I love your stank face I’m glad you enjoyed this one, it’s one of my all time favorites from them! I was surprised you didn’t comment on my favorite part of the whole cover which is when Rock Tenor Eli unleashes that super high belt… You Will Buuuurn!!! Sooo good. I’m sure others mentioned it but Eli also voiced the cloaked figure. When you get to Oogie Boogie’s Song, he also voiced Santa.
Bass face *activated* Yes so good! I really could make videos upwards of an hour on each of these songs if I said everything, so I need to really pick and choose what I include Didn't know he voiced the cloaked figure - was wondering who that might be!
@@SirHairless I would pay extra for an hour of your thoughts on these!!
We seriously will watch that and longer, that's how awesome it is! One reactor I watch routinely puts out hour and a half reaction and analyses.

@@thisismetoday7423 Yup! 😁
Just to extend your acapella tentacles a bit farther, check out Peter Hollens and Tim Foust singing "Greensleeves".
Very traditional, no gymnastics, no agitation. Just a favorite duet by them.
I think you’ll find that it’s Layne’s arrangements that have more rhythmic complexities. Also, since he’s realized how much the fans want it, his arrangements are more apt to include a solo line or two by Layne. Other’s arrangements tend to only have him beatboxing, or not to really feature him even if he is singing.
On your own, you might enjoy the dragonborn comes by vp. The voices, costumes, and set are beautifully crafted
👀
These are the musical theater kids we know and love. 😊
Thank you for this VP reaction. Although the company which controls Geoff’s solos won’t monetize your reaction, I will join the chorus asking for it. I’ll go against the crowd begging for one of his hits and ask for “Shenandoah.” It opens with Geoff simply playing the piano & singing before building quietly. It’s sung simply beautifully while being musically complex - without either quality compromising the other.
What company? Geoff is completely independent.
I just really like VoicePlays take on this rendition .I know I’ve seen this movie before but why don’t I remember the music?
I know it’s Disney. It was really good!
I remember
a Gargoyle as a main character, and of course Quasimodo.
It reminded me of The Oogie boogie man song from Nightmare Before Christmas. (VoicePlay does a rendition of Oogie Boogie Man. It's very good))That movie has some great music even though it’s not a Disney movie.

I've listened to this version of Hellfire many times (either on my own or with reactors) and I seem to be the only one who has noticed an oddity. After the jailer reports that Esmerelda is missing, Frollo reacts (in the original Disney movie) "I'll find her! I'll find her if I have to burn down all of Paris!" But Geoff says: "I'll find her! I'll find her and I'll find her if I have to..." It's a small thing, but it catches my ear EVERY time I hear it, and either other people don't "hear" it, or I guess they just don't feel it's worthy of mention, which makes me feel like a real nit-picker!
I noticed it but didn’t care. The wording of the cloaked figure is a little different too. I don’t think they are mistakes but just them changing it a bit to fit the flow and rhythm of what they are doing. They like making things their own.
@@thisismetoday7423 Glad to hear someone noticed. I wasn't bothered by mismatch with the original. It's that the extra "I'll find her" sounds completely redundant to me and redundancy is a pet peeve of this English major.
I know, I'm ridiculous! 😏
@@sudelaine8653 LOL!! It’s understandable! I have my pet peeves as well and can be a bit of a perfectionist. Which is probably why I also noticed it to begin with. But in all honesty, I would probably forgive these guys for just about anything because I just love them that much. I laugh at the occasional little costume mishaps or continuity issues in videos. When it comes down to it these little things aren’t enough to take away from the overall experience for me. And I always remember they do everything themselves and that it’s a lot of work. I sure couldn’t do it! 😅
