All I can say is I am pleased you've joined the club in having locos that don't work as they should. I have a Bachmann Tank engine and it won't go round the track no matter what's been done to it so now it just sits on the shelf.
I've never handled a trix anything in my life, but if I had to guess how to fix it from falling apart is I assume the front bogie is screwed on? The screw probably falls through the hole so give it a washer probably. Motor might need a bit more look into but I ususally give the motor bearings a little oil to shut it up a bit
Hi, the bogie has been taken off as the wheels have come off the axle. I did glue them but they came off again. I will have another go at cleaning and oiling the motor but I have a feeling it's not going to be a good runner. Cheers Rick
Your lucky lol yes it's noisy but my lilliput model A4 merlin suffered from mazak rot in the tender now has a hornby tender drive unit retro fitted to replace it. My main line royal scot was so bad the quatering went out etc, eventually I bought a lima one to replace it will never buy a main line steam loco again.
Hi, I hope to get the A4 running as it's not a bad looker. The Mainline locos are ticking time bombs, in addition to Leander I've got Scots Guardsman and another similar loco ( the name escapes me) The are all poor runners and no I won't be buying any more, these were only bought as they were once at Dinting which we are modeling. As far as the jubilee goes , mainline locos have always been one I’ve strayed away from especially second hand the coaches and wagons are fantastic and the details of locos for there time are fantastic but the mechanics are what let them down , spilt chassis are questionable The run verry rough and loud for the most time and there are alot of common issues including wheels slipping on axels and some times self distrustuction , the idea of metal metal tyres on plastic wheels and axels was a huge mistake from them sadly , and the gears are made from a rather low quality plastic and are prone to shearing , Looseing teeeth and warping sadly
Hi, it is a shame isn't it, hence why there are plenty of cheap locos available. I bought Leander as we are modeling Dinting where it was based otherwise I would have steered clear. The loco is going to spend its time as a static model in a siding. A shame really as it's a stunner. Cheers Rick

Poor old loco, seems to have been well used and now has an owner that doesn't appreciate it! All I can say is beware of Hornby 08 Shunters, I have one and the coupling rod snapped and despite being not that old Hornby don't make the replacements for them and you can't get hold of one at all.
I found when I dabbled in N gauge the Graham farish models were not very good ,minitrix class 27 was nice though ,as for my OO you can make a Lima model purr with a little work All the best Mark 👍🏻😊

There is a saying that says" cheap bought, is expensive payed in the end" , there is always a risk in secondhand stuff, it can be a bargain, but if it doesn't run as expected, an expensive nightmare. You never know how the previous owner(s) handled it and what happened to it. A tip is, if you have the chance, ask if you can see it run, if the seller has nothing to hide, this shouldn't be a problem then. Of corse this is not always possible, unfortunately. I'm sure both can be made good runners again, but it depends on your skills and effort you want to put into it. Cleaning, removing old grease, servicing the motor, cleaning up the pickups, is always a good start and advisable when a second hand model is bought. But what's even worse is when you buy a brand new model, that was announced with lots expectance, you had to pre oder, wait an endless time to be released, at an over £200 price, and than turns out to be a mechanical flop, that's a very bitter pill…

@@wellchuffedrailways Peeved is the very least you can say, that happened to me with the Bachmann produced LNWR improved precedent class 2-4-0 NO.790 'HARDWICKE', super nice detailed body, but technically not a good design. It comes with rubber anti slip tires and if you run it on DCC like I do, they are rubbish, as there is not enough pick up from the track, luckily it comes with an extra set of normal wheels without the the rubber tires , that makes it run a bid better, but still it is not a wonder on the tracks, and for that money, it's a real shame. But I really envy you, and I think a lot of train modelers are, you got a wife that's interested in model railways, that's something very precious😂😉 I also watched a lot of your videos, and as a Belgian who collects only collects British train models, the amount of fairs you go to makes me envy you also😂 But perhaps you can give me a few good tips, next year 2023 I planing to visit a Uk meeting in spring, I will stay with relatives in the Leicester area, is, or are the model train fairs in that aria, or that are reachable by public transport under the 2 hour travel, that you say, that's worth wile to go to??? Hi Danny, we had a gentleman visit from Australia earlier this year and I put out a post where everyone could suggest places for him to visit so if it's ok I will do the same for you. I have not visited any shows in the Leicester area although they have one at the Great Central Railway I'd like to attend. I have visited the railway and it is fantastic so that should be on your list regardless of a show being on. In regards to my lovely wife Pauline's main interest in railways is the scenery (and the layouts themselves) as she is into arts and crafts and she has taken brilliantly to kit building-not that I'm jealous! I didn't know some locos come with two sets of wheels which is interesting. All the best Rick
@@wellchuffedrailways Thank for helping me to find out if there is an interesting model train fair, all help is appreciated.👍 I did also some snooping around and I saw that there is a fair at York race corse on the Sat 8th - Mon 10th April 2023 do you have any experience with that one? It's a two hour train drive from Leicester, so that is manageable. We even can make a two day event and visit the NRM as well… And there are of course the Leicester model shops that I always visit when I'm over in the UK. As for an extra set of wheels, this seems to be a new fashion, Dapol did the same with the SECR 737 4-4-0 “D” class. Both loco's are made as special editions for the NRM, perhaps that has something to do with it, and not to forget both are not the cheapest models…
COol video, even if dealing with the negatives. I have had a couple lemons. Interesting that it was an old "Trix Trains." I did not know Trix made OO, but apparently they did for a while. SHicked it was bad, Trix was always high quality in HO... now owned by Märklin.
old locos are very often not even broken in. Have you tried to run it continuously for a couple of hours in both directions ? anyway a very interesting video on a common problem. Thanks !
if the wheels fall off there axles fit them on then set the gap to 14.1 then add a drop of super glue to each end of the front pony wheels do one at a time leave time for the glue to stick then refit pony wheel bogie
To be honest super glue won't keep for long, and if you use it, all surfaces must be clean and grease free, that is the case for every glue by the way. JB weld is a better choice if it comes to glues. But even better is to drill the wheels out on a lathe and fit a tight fitting bush, but that require some engineering skills.

I found that when we buy second hand we are buying someone elses troubles and more than likely why the hoiked them out to sell to someone else , errr like us silly buggers that buy them , hahha ,, I found that trains are like us ,, the older we get the worse in condition we get too and start to break down ie iv had a total replacement of my left hip and need both the left and right knee replaced ,, I've pulled arm muscles in three spots and broken rotor cuffs in both my shoulders and carpul tunnel in my right hand and im only 55 ,, so if i were a horse theyd shoot me.. hahha and trains are much the same.. I think the worst thing about our hobby is that I cant stand the outrageously expensive costs that people want here in Australia for our trains that are 40 to 50 year old. I seen a couple of virgin hst 125 cars in 1 of the train stands you went to and they had them for there for 15 pounds (around 25 to 28 buks here in oz) yet the cheapest ones here are 50 to 80 buks ausd and flying scotsmans and the nigel bresly teak cars well i bought 3 of the teek cars here in oz and payed $130 so i thought id look further a field and bought 7 of them for less than $120 delivered all up ,, then the brexit thing came in and the cost of postage went thru the roof so i had to opt out of that. Peters trains in the uk wanted me to pay a minimum cost 2kgs from uk to oz of near $70 for some plastic drive cogs that weighed less than 30grams all up so i challenge the cost and the reply was oh well you best be buying lots of bits to get your postage costs worth hahaha rudr mjch ,, yes i think so ,, so f that haha lol ,, i ended up getting them from another seller and the post cost was only 3 pound 60 so i got all 8 cogs for 28.60 all up delivered to me in oz ,,, oh well.. Anyhoo keep the good work and gr8 work m8's and keep them awesome videos coming. Cheers from John in Australia.
Hi John, glad to hear you are still puffing along despite all your ailments, it sounds like you have had a complete refit! I'm 51 and expect I will need some work soon once I have clocked up a few more miles. Costs will always be a problem, unfortunately even more so these days. Thankfully my good purchases far outweigh the bad ones and there is a lot of satisfaction turning a poor runner into a good one, you can't get that satisfaction from paying hundreds for something new. On Leander its the insulation between the split axles that causes the issues. Mine is still pretty good, but I know one day it will just let go!

I have a trix double tender scotsman. It has a 5 pole loco drive and extra pickups in tender. Very smooth and stunning model
That is a loco I would definitely be interested in purchasing if I see one. Unfortunately I didn't have the money when I saw the Trix A3 at Elsecar.

They sound louder than they actually are due to the mic location. However cement mixers is not far wrong!
