    Because nobody cares about the actual shoe. Just “what’s the resell” or “how can I cop to resell”. As a person who still likes shoes to wear and buys them every other week for personal but also got into reselling, sometimes I feel guilty and annoyed lol. I still think a combination stockx, the yeezy era, and gentrification of sneaker culture caused this lol

    I have to agree with Tom. Going to the sneaker store and seeing nothing great is a real disappointment. It sucks that reselling has taken over the sneaker game. People who really want shoes can’t get them because of resellers. For example, I wanted the J Balvin 1’s and a lot of people online were clowning them and when release day came I could not get them because of resellers and bots and it’s just the worse.

  • @sleepydude17
    @sleepydude17 Před 3 lety +2

    I gave up dude. Been collecting since ‘00-‘01 and of course much has changed. I remember walking into a footlocker in NY and picking up a pair of Bred 11’s for $125. No line up, no fighting, just a normal day. In fact, I changed my mind at the counter and told the cashier, you know what give me a second pair. No problem whatsoever. I wore one pair into the ground (still have them) and gave the other to my friend for retail. As I get older, no time to join every raffle, try for every SNKRS drop, or pay ridiculous resell. Every sneaker that remotely grabs me, I can pretty much assume I’m not getting it. Not fun anymore. Call me a quitter, but I just accept it as a part of getting older. Can’t have everything you that you want in life.

    The sneaker culture will make a come back. It is clear that the culture has hit a slight decline, because of the current status of sneakers in general. But once the majority of society starts going back to some sort of normalcy, especially here in the US. Then we'll start seeing an increased interest in sneakers again.

    And certain people in the scene ruined it just trying to make money and not wearing shoes. I’m glad, maybe now, I can get shoes to wear instead of watching a ton of sneaker videos with walls of sneakers that people don’t even wear!!! The people suck now and are shady AF. I would to pay 500 bucks for a decent pair of Jordans but not every pair that comes out. You used to be able to actually get the sneaker that you wanted, now it’s all people trying to resell. That’s why the Uni Blue 1s are so damn cheap and a ton of other Jordan’s are declining in price which I’m stoked about!!! I like wearing my shoes and the thought that they could be worth 2K in 6 months doesn’t make me want to put them on feet, though I will, as I pay retail for my shoes. Or I used to because in the last 6 months, I’ve taken every L possible. It is what it is.

    As somebody who only got into sneakers in 2018, I kinda got to see a bit of both the older sneaker culture vs the newer one. Back in 2018 I remember seeing the Hyper Royals, all white and the All Star 1s sitting for weeks. Mids for the most part were untouched. The hype colorways of course sold out. Now? Aj1s barely sit on shelf anymore. Even if they’re not OG, or there’s no story behind them. People just tryna flip em. It’s no longer about the sneaker. It’s about the money. And when things become all about the money, is it really a culture, or just business?

  • @toneriggz
    @toneriggz Před 3 lety +1

    Reselling has always been a problem, it’s just that the combination of Nike’s policy changes and Covid accelerated the growth of reselling and the decline of people’s interests in shoes. A lot of people are going to lost interest in sneaker videos if they can’t even get GR’s themselves meanwhile some random CZcams jabroni is flexing about the free shoes they were given. Sneaker videos work because people feel like they’re part of the conversation. They either have the shoes or want to get them. But when absurd resell prices are the only option, they’re no longer part of the convo.

    Let’s not forget that not everyone lives in a big city, so online and resellers to some extent have opened up opportunity to a wider audience too. My local stores are whack and travelling in to London expensive. Sometimes easier to just pay 20-30 over retail for some people.

  • @SneakerPhetish
    @SneakerPhetish Před 3 lety +1

    I don’t think Sneaker Culture is “dead”. I think it’s changing & evolving, which is normal for any living, breathing organism like Sneakers. The landscape has changed. The Core Demographic for sneaker consumers have shifted from Millennials that used to camp out to Generation Z, who places value on different things. That’s like saying “Music Is Dead” just because it sounds different than it did 20 years ago lol...I don’t think interest in sneakers on CZcams is dwindling as much as creativity in this space is at an all time low. You can only open a shoe & say “these are dope” so many times before the audience gets bored. It’s not that people aren’t watching this platform, it’s just their tastes are shifting & sneaker youtubers are doing an awful job of tuning into it & shifting/evolving along with it. I respect your stance 100% & share your sentiments that things are VERY different....but I don’t think it’s “Dead”. Lots of new designers are getting incredible collabs & telling great stories, but those stories require digging deeper to get the message & inspiration. Also agree Seth’s “Un Hype” series is dope too. Good topic.

    But if no one bought of them (easier said than done I know) they'd get a sharp wake up call having hundreds of shoes and money tied up that no one wants, they'd panic and probably sell up move on to something else.

    Coming from a country that has less residents then an average city from the USA, even here before the pandemic we would get new releases in stores, but now with the increasing popularity of resale and backdooring we are not getting anything anymore. Not just in my country bit in the region as well. Nike doesn't even ship new releases in the region, or ships 5-6 pairs per country, because we are not a target audience. I get it its a business and there is no love in business, and this, as well as the whole health situation is the new normal that we have to get used to.

    I totally agree with what you had to say in your video. I stopped buying sneakers a long time because I saw the writing on the wall. I love some of the designs and silhouettes that Nike and other sneaker brands drop but with the rise of resellers / reseller apps, people "doing it for the gram" and limited quantities, it's just not fun anymore. The resellers took the joy out of buying that one sneaker you love. The sneaker I buy on the regular are the Nike Daybreak or the Tailwind. That's it. I don't bother with anything else. It's just not worth my time and money.

    I especially noticed this decline because my strategy was to buy worn pairs of newer shoes about a week or 2 after release date because they would always be cheap.
    I promise you I can barely find anything worn nowadays. No one wears anything anymore & the people that do are actual shoe heads so they’re not selling.

    Yes it will come back once they finally get some bot protection in place but more importantly once in store pick ups come back too
    Party of the good content is waiting for releases and sneakers events
    Like tony b2wild does he still manages to go in store which makes the content better

    Good you're going to affordable sneakers. Buying from resellers is too expensive for me. Affordability is the norm now.

    This one of the best videos I've seen in a long time... One of the things I miss is seeing all the Kobes being on the wall amongst being able to buy other Jordans... I hate the new flex app system I never hit on and being in a waiting room that goes no where.. Last pair sitting on shelves I was able to get was the gym red Jordan ones which are now going for 400. but I still wear all my shoes I buy.. If my friends want pairs i'm able to win on snkr app I sell it to them for the price i bought em for.. Keep up the great work Tom

    Sneaker videos everyday gets a bit repetitive and probably why views go down. You can only talk about shoes so much. Glad you're diversifying your content 👍

    Nike, Adidas, Yeezy and all the other companies need to mass produce the sneakers or we should be able to order direct from manufacturers. Sneak Culture been wack for over a decade because people saw profit in collecting and hoarding shoes instead of treating them like wearable art. There’s no story to connect these sneakers like back in the day. We have to add flavor and style to our sneakers when we went out.

  • @JeremyGiese

    Yeah….it’s all about the next hyped thing for likes and $$ on resell. My interest in sneakers is very strong but it’s more on function and performance(i.e running, basketball and general comfort with walking). the hype Jordan’s and collabs hasn’t interested me. What brought me to watch your channel was you just going about NYC.

  • @LeiDontPlay

    Eventually all this copping-hype will drain those who don’t truthfully care about shoes. I still remember so many og colorways sitting back in 2013-2016 it’ll return that way again.

    Just discovered the hobby and the pain of living in a small country with more resellers than sneakerheads
    , No retail stores that take in the shoes, No sneakersapp and one online outlet Who takes in Jordan 1s, its all pain but the 1 jordan 1 pair i got love then to bits

    There are alot of so called sneakerheads these days that are actually Just People Who like air force 1s and air Jordan ones, and there is nothing wrong with that in itself, but its like saying you are a fan of Dortmund but only knowing Erling Haaland.

    Well, if a got that right, seems like you are shifting your content partly because "real Sneaker content" is down the road and people is more interested in resell content. It shows that you also see sneakers as business and don't add nothing just for the Passion of the culture. Your CZcams is about making money and selling boxes.

    Not sure if there will a resurgence, too many people making a business out of what a lot of people did for enjoyment or as their hobby. I do miss getting up early, waiting in line, and making new friends and connections. Reselling, bots, and a lot of places not allowing people to camp out anymore have contributed to the changing landscape of copping and collecting sneakers. Also, there are more people who just cop, never wear the shoes and let the shoes sit on their shelves until until the resell market goes up. Wear your shoes people!

    Man, I got into sneakers real late and even though it's only been 5 years ... the culture is dying; it has turned to only hype. I've moved into appreciating vintage Jordans. Just picked up a whole bunch of Jordans, Lebrons, an OG Fusion 5 etc. for a few pennies and some of them are the best sneakers I've ever owned - Lebron 6 2009? My new favourite shoe. KD 'Xmas 2010'? Incredible shoe. OG Fusion 5 'Grey Nurse'? Total fire. Even compared to the Hyper Royals I picked up recently ... there's stories with shoes, let's not forget that. The culture got lost in its own sauce.

  • @KitWatch96
    @KitWatch96 Před 3 lety

    You forgot to mention that all the newbies who are wearing Jordan 1 mids because influencers and tiktokers told them they're cool are also a huge driving factor in why sneaker culture is dead....
    Literally everyone owns a Jordan 1 these days, it's sad. I met a girl yesterday wearing dunk highs and she was 100% sure they were Jordans.... 🤦‍♂️ She had no idea what dunks are even though she owns them. She just bought them from some instagram reseller because they "look like those Jordans everybody wears these days".... Oh yeah plus she has absolutely no idea who Michael Jordan is... But none of them do, it's just a cool shoe to wear like all the tiktokers. 🙃 These people are buying sneakerheads shoes because they're being told they're cool on Instagram. Sneakers that used to belong to sneakerheads are now just another fad that's in fashion. Our culture's identity has been stolen and diluted.
