    The turning point here is the "SHUT UP" from Lando, you can't expect the race engineer to be confident in giving orders after that, Lewis was calm never shouted so for Bono it wasn't a problem to force Lewis into the pits

      Totally agree with this- putting myself in Will Joseph's shoes, I wouldn't know what to tell my driver and when after that. Whilst I can see how stressful this situation must have been for Lando, I think he could have communicated in a much better way.

      All he needed to hear to be sure he would win, maybe. Assuming the video is accurate as far as timing of radio messages, then that call happened after Hamilton went on inters anyhow so it wouldn't have influenced Merc tire decisions in any way.

    A big differentiator between Lewis and Lando's outcome in this race was communication. There is a clear ease between Lewis and his engineer. Lando on the other hand was always SO very HARSH with his engineer. The guy's voice seemed to tremble every time he came on to give a new piece of information. I think Lando was a little too greedy and got blinded by the possibility of victory shutting

      Must have been massively stressful for Lando, knowing he had to hold off Lewis and be absolutely perfect in the slippery conditions for a few more laps to win. A real heartbreaker but I’m sure he’ll get his win.

    The difference in communication is insane. Lando cuts his communication in stress, while Hamilton and Bono still talk.
    When Lewis is informed he can pit, and stay ahead of Max, he decides that finishing on top of Max is more important than risking a crash, which would be big blow against his title chances, meanwhile, Norris is unwilling to let go of a first time 1st place finish over a much more secure 2nd-3rd finish.

    The funny thing is: I expected Lewis to stay out.
    But Bono played it classy. Lewis was told: Bottas pitted, verxtappen pitted, Norris may have pitted! That sealed the deal.
    In this instance, the team had to convince the drivers because there was only 4 laps to go.
    And somehow I don’t feel bad for Norris. He didn’t give his team a chance to convince him. He literally shut them down.

      That’s why the team strategists are so crucial. The call to pit had to be conveyed taking into account the driver’s personality and triggers..

      Did you not hear the engineer tell him the rain wouldn’t intensify? While Bono told Lewis that it would get worse! Whoever was looking at the weather radar is the problem. Lando was never told the rain would increase.

    I understand that it's heat of the moment, but I really hate when drivers tell engineers to shut up. It's incredibly unprofessional and rude to the only dude who's got your back for the entire race.

      The thing is engineers won't mind that. drivers are driving 200-300 kmph and engineers are just sitting there comfortably in a chair. So they drivers tend to be more aggressive and many times they are get along very well outside the circuit

      @@janudapannila3317 comfortable chair or not, anyway the engineer is not just there drinking a tee while talking. Those guys are checking a hundred of different data. In the video of Max's 5 finals laps, you can really appreciate all the info that guy is handling and giving to the driver: lap times of him and other racers, when he will get the car in front, how many, forecast and slippery turns... All that info was given in only 1 lap time. Plus the command of going into the box to change tires. Stress is on both sides of the mic the same amount, just drivers are the ones you see on tv

    More than driving experience, which is key for sure, what this shows is the difference on team engineering mentality. One side asserts to his driver, a multiple world champ at that, that he must pit. On the other hand, McLaren run with his driver on track feeling until it was too late. Certainly room for growth for Lando and the team.

      Yeah 100%. Mercedes knew the had to overrule Hamilton, they have the weather radar and they know more than him about what's coming. McLaren needed to be way firmer with Lando and basically tell him he's coming in for new boots.

      @@robspanjersberg9972 I think Bottas was one of the first guys to pit for inters and 100% before Verstappen. Great decision by Mercedes, made lewis won the race and Bottas P5 was unbelievable. Also, Lewis ignored the call the first time else he would have also pitted before Verstappen.

    Norris' interactions with his crew in that race sort of reminded me of a parent trying to convince a toddler to go to bed. Something like:
    Parent (Crew): "Lando, it's getting late (wet) sweetie. Time to go bed (get inters)"
    Lando: "I want to stay up (keep my lead) like a grown up!"
    Parent (Crew): "Lando, it's getting really late (weather's getting worse). Please go to bed (pit for inters).
    Lando: "NO!"

    As much as we are bored seeing Lewis win, wins like these show why him and Mercedes have won all those titles. In critical situations they usually come up with the best decisions, excepting a few.

      I don’t think so. The reason why It look like they don’t make many mistakes is because they don’t need to make any decisions in the past. They are so far ahead of the rest that it doesn’t really matter what they do, they will finish first. Only this year they have decent competition and as you can see, they do make mistakes.

      @Magical The problem here wasn't the decision, was the yelling and telling his engineer to shut-up when he was just trying to help.
      This childish behavior, might have contributed to the McLaren engineer giving less and less information to comply with Lando request.
      Lando was acting as a solo man on the last 10 laps and not even considering anything he was being told.
      You won't win F1 that way.

    2:25 I think this is the pivotal moment, Landos engineer saying the rain will remain the same (edit: they were both saying it wasn’t raining much at that point), Hamilton’s telling him the intensity will increase. I feel that this was the key for Lando choosing to try and stick to slicks until the end unfortunately, although he definitely should’ve listened to his engineer later on when he was asked about inters

      in hindsight, you could say they made all the wrong calls and everything, but deep down with the uncertainty, lando made the right call to do the opposite of hamilton since once hamilton boxed he already covered the gap to lando if he boxed. Mclaren had no option but to gamble staying out and not getting caught so that lando gets the win. But unfortunately it rained more. If Lando had boxed he would have had a chance to be in a higher position but what can you do, sometimes in f1 you risk it for the biscuit

    What mclaren didn't realize is that Mercedes would always react to verstappen. Even if boxing for inters would have been the wrong call, ham and ver would be on the same tyres, with ham having 50 sec lead. That way ham would always finish ahead of ver. Even when it would mean ham would full outside of podium , it would be still worth champsionship wise.

      I think two laps after his first slip, would have been perfect. cause he was still quite fast on most of the track when bottas pitted. but exactly the lap that Verstappen pitted the clouds seemed to cover the entire track and were quite dark. that's when the team should have. realized the time was right. just ahead of hamilton. and I think that if Lando goes in, hamilton would have tried to go for it which would have cost him for sure.

    Ohhhh, so when they told Hamilton that there was more rain coming, Hamilton had already started going into the pit lane, so that comment about more rain coming wasn't a factor in Hamilton's decition to go in. He just trusted them. That extra info about more rain coming may have helped to make him feel more confident in their decision though.

    Both of them wanted to stay (which is somehow understandible) the team here made a huge difference..Lewis was informed about weather, that Max is piting, his engineer literally ordering Lewis to pit even tho he said the track is geting dry..if Merc didn't push Lewis to pit and listened to him like Mclaren did to Lando this would've been a different story and we would had Max wining from the last place lol

      But radars aren't 100% accurate. RB let Max decide if he wanted to switch or not because they weren't sure ether and fortunately Max made the right decision. There was a moment when Will advised Lando that track was already very slippery and Lando's reply was "Yeah shut up!". I think if Lando was composed and didn't let his temper tantrum took him over, he would've have made a better decision like Max.
      This what I heard from the full comms in chronological ordor.
      Will advised Lando that DRS has been disabled. It means track is getting slippery.
      Will advised Lando that some cars were pitting for interns.
      Will advised Landothat track was already VERY slippery and lot of cars were going off track.
      Lando's reply "Yeah! Shut up!".
      Will asked Lando again if he would like to switch to intern
      Lando angrily replied "NO!".

    The communication difference is amazing. On one side, a engineer is talking with a seven times world champion and giving precise and clear imformation. On the other side, a engineer is almost affraid to displease a young pilot and letting him to make a critical decision based on his feeling on the track.

    I’ve never known Lewis to ever freak out on the radio. Complain sure (even though his complaints are mostly code to his team) but never lose his cool, even when it’s all going wrong. Even when his engineer is losing it, Lewis is the one to calm him down.
    A true champion of champions.
    …Actually, there was one small one:
    Lewis: BLUE FLAG!
    - Brazil 2008, but it was the closing seconds of the race that got him his first championship win…so that’s okay :)

All the comments haters make about Hamilton, or Verstappen or whoever with regards to how they behave in and out of the cars, they're all like it, it's competitive determination at 200mph. They don't have time to be nice, they only have time to be blunt and to the point. Engineers all know this, and will be used to dealing with fiery drivers.

      This is being blown way out of proportion. Lando has always said he doesn’t like a lot of radio messages while driving and often asks for silence. He is under the most pressure he has ever been leading with a chance of winning for the first time. He’s got a seven time world champion behind in a faster car constantly pressuring him. He’s trying to concentrate and he’s getting information he doesn’t care about regarding other cars. Drivers have said way worse things on the radio before. Remember that press conference where Lewis was asked about swearing on the radio and Seb defended him saying in the heat of the moment you’re not going to say things in a nice way.

      @@tamryn2967 I'm sure that was because Lewis called Max a d***head, kinda different to swearing/shouting at your race engineer. Lando isn't too different to the other young drivers though, a lot of them can get a bit heated on the radio, except for Schumacher, he just beeps.

    Lewis has trust, confidence, consistency and keeps his cool.
    Lando is immature, overly risk taking, too emotional and shows that he's under pressure.
    Lewis is the better driver.

    Masterclass, this is how you handle difficult times, calm and with a lot of confidence in what you have around you, Lewis handles it very well, the experience came into play big time here. Turn the table around and you would have way more nonsense comments about how Lewis was a loser for not listening to the pit wall, double standard at his best with some fan.

    As much as I like Lando, he got the result that he deserved. His petulant, know-it-all attitude cost him the race. His race engineers tried various ways to convince him to pit for inters but he thought he knew best.

    When I heard the result and what happened to Lando so late on I felt sorry for him. Not so much now after seeing this. He got what he deserved. Being disrespectful to your crew is a big no no. They got you to where you were.

    At the beginning (2:28) Lando is told: "We're expecting this intensity the whole race" and nobody tells him otherwise. Lewis is being told: "Rain intensity increasing" (2:40).
    Lando was definitely on edge but the initial information both of them got and which created the framework in which they took the decisions are very different.

    Honestly I get it's disappointing Lando lost but I don't understand this trend of everyone feeling bad for him. He cost himself the race. He didn't lose because of a freak failure or something. Big fan of McLaren but there's nothing to feel bad for. He made a mistake due to his inexperience and likely learned a valuable lesson.

      I agree. He was thinking too far ahead instead of lap by lap. What made me angry was the lack of communication between the team and Lando. We’ll get them next time

      I feel bad for him too. If you listen to the radio messages he gets, they tell him it will not get worse (when 3/4 of the track was still dry) and that's what he based his decision to stay out on. The team should have called him in, instead of leaving the choice to him. So I can't blame him for making that call.

      I don’t think it’s really inexperience. Alonso, Perez, Leclerc and Vettel all stayed on the tyres too long and they’re not exactly inexperienced. Alonso was told the same as lando that the rain would not get worse

    The difference is definitely I think Mercedes’ being used to being in those high positions and able to command their drivers like that, where as it’s no longer as common for McLaren to be at the front of the field and not being as confident with those type of decisions.

      The experience certainly helps but the key factor was Lewis being second with a free pit stop. Had the positions been reversed Lando would have pitted and Lewis would have stayed out. It’s a brave call to pit from the lead in these situations, and sometimes being second is the best position to be in!

      @@MaximusOwen1 Why did they do the extra lap though? Lewis pitted first and Lando could had pitted the lap after. Instead they waited another lap and that's where it all went wrong. They pitted Danny first, they should have info from his car to see what was the right tyre to be on

      it's his 3rd year and it's his first time at the front of the front. He was being chased by a faster car and had to manage with the rain. Hamilton has experience in this therefore knowing what to do. Lando will definitely learn from this.

      Indeed, and his relationship with Will Joseph clearly needs work. Telling him to shut up discourages communication at a time in the race when relaying information, and having a conversation is paramount.

      I think you also have to understand though, he was heart broken, and h Eli’s young, he’s got a lot to learn. I think any driver in that situation would be angry, frustrated and all sorts of negative emotions. It’s hard to judge Norris' character by a situation like this where he is still learning to trust in the process. Give it a few years, who know maybe we can see this sort of thing again and see his reaction, we live and learn

    Mazepin's communication with his team in the changing weather was interesting too.
    To Mazepin: "expect this rain to continue to the end of the race, just like this, not getting any worse"
    Mazepin: "copy... The rain is quite s***... We need to box, we need to box for the inters"
    To Mazepin: "we hear your message on tyres. Are you sure we need inters?"
    Mazepin: "yes, yeah, otherwise i cannot keep it on track"
    To Mazepin: "what about soft? Could you survive on softs?"
    Mazepin: "negative"
    To Mazepin: "understood, box Nikita box!"
