For those not in the know, in the japanese version (as far as I know) of buddhism, 108 is the number sins/evil passions every person has in them. Every midnight of december 31, people head over to the buddhist temples to hear them ring their bells 108 times to purify those sins so they start the year fresh so to speak.

Including as what he said, 108 also generally seen as divine number in religion or martial arts all over the world, it doesn't always point at bad stuff, sometimes good too. That's why its also used in pop culture, one example are Suikoden games where they always has 108 total party member on each titles.

I think it's interesting that no one in the comments has brought up the fact that, okayu is based on a yokai from Japanese mythology and a very powerful one at that. I took okayu's comment about wanting to eat loli subaru as her playing into her yokai origins. Nekomata I believe did eat people so in that light it makes sense but also a child would be an easy meal for a Nekomata.

Nekomata aren't generically "very powerful" since anyone's interpretation of them changes depending on who you ask and where they may be from, the most common depiction is a cat that has grown old enough to gain an extra tail and a high level of wisdom or a cat that lives in the mountains.
As far as I've read, Nekomata stories don't involve children being kidnapped or eaten, Domesticated Nekomata are depicted as kind Yokai and Mountain Nekomata come in a range of benevolent to malevolent.
Beyond the simple name "Nekomata" I don't think Okayu is based on them at all, just a normal cat.
