    as someone who studied metallurgy, your right about the kin-pin. the nut is mild steel so more soft and the kingpin is high carbon steel so more hard. so yes the kingpin will slip faster when against other metals but will be like an anchor against Concrete. where the nut will be softer and feel more like wax against Concrete but could be more sticky when sliding against other metals.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX Před 3 lety +11

      Yeah so true. I keep switching different board sizes, wheels and trucks a bunch lately. And it's pretty much hurting my learning to skate. It's crazy how much it matters to go from 8.0" board to 8.25" and switch from Venture or Tensor to Thunder 148. At the same time, I kind of like to experiment and try what works best anyway. But I do think I should stick with a 8.25" for a bit, to really learn to skate better.

    • @idmhead0160
      @idmhead0160 Před 3 lety +5

      @@PHeMoX I only started skating again back in the spring after years of not skating. I've been working my way up the board sizes on Mini Logo decks with Independent trucks. Started out with an 8" deck, then, 8.25", and now I got a 8.5" but, haven't yet tried it. I used to skate back in the 80s when decks were more like 10". I like the 8.25" better than the 8". I'll see how I like the 8.5". That's probably where I will stop. I like the Mini Logo decks. Once I find the sweet spot, I want to standardize on that. I'm thinking maybe 8.5" will be it. Before I got the 8" deck, I had an Element deck from years ago that was a 7.75". I don't see what the point of small decks like that are. I'm glad there is a trend of board sizes getting bigger again. I'm old though and hence am not that into or worried about doing a lot of flip tricks. As long as the bigger deck doesn't suck at staight up ollies, I'd rather have the bigger one. I used to be able to clear 5 boards interlocked on a 10" board back in the day. So, I guess it should work. If my ollies suck now, it won't be because of the board. It will be because my borderline obese ass is out of shape.

    When I started skating in the late 80s I guess, we used to always invert the kingpins ourselves. Back in those days the kingpins were just like a normal bolt with a hex-shaped head which was the bit that locked into the baseplate. Seemed to work great, but the bottom of the bolt did extend past the bottom of the baseplate and would gouge into the board somewhat, and probably caused my boards to crack because they used to crack a lot.

    Going to give em a miss stick with 144 hollows .I have fitted old grind king kingpins which work well and give proper clearance only snag is you have to jam nut in baseplate with metal and superglue .

    Independent said in their review video that they use the same amount of material in the mid's hangers and the highs.
    The extra weight actually comes from a steel kingpin mount in the base plate.
    That being said, you shouldn't notice too much extra weight because it is being kept close to your feet.

I have a question for you, have you ever had the chance to ride Fury Trucks? I used to skate them back in late 90s, as an alternative to my Venture, I also had Arto Saari Fury Pro model in 2005. I prefer riding Independent these days, but I have recently found on an old box some of my old Fury Trucks, I used to like them, but these days I find them very Weird and too super light. Did you have the chance to try the inverted kingpin on the standatd height indys? Did they perform better in smith grinds like you supposed or the regular nut is still the way to go for smiths on indys?

  • @RadioJack

    So the mids have the standard bushings? Can't wait until Tuesday when my 159 mids come in. Probably going to switch my bushings with the bones mediums if they're the same bushing size as standards.

  • @benjaminfitzgerald7839

    I'm liking the geometry and them being lower.
    And thankfully lockdown has just ended here in Melbourne yesterday, so my local skateshop should be open on Fri when I head into the CBD .
    Fingers crossed they'll have a lovely amount of stock to choose from.

      Crazy my local skateshop here in los angeles never closed because he sells a few bike parts so he was considered essential. He only really has helmets and bike bells.

      That's awesome DH ,
      I've always ridden bikes, before I started skating,
      & before I got my licence for those horrid wet days.
      But things got so shut down here my local bike shop
      (who'd been in business for 15+ yrs),
      had to permanently close his shop as here it wasn't deemed essential.
      Hopefully he'll be able to set up somewhere else soon for his sake.
      Tis weird,
      I've not run bald tyres(bike),
      & nursed bearings & boards along since I was 15yrs old.🙁
      Probably one of the only things that makes me appreciate being older.
      I hope you're fairing better in your town my friend.
      Keep on rolling, & be well.🙂

    Not sure why Independent Trucks is calling the mid trucks “new” when they are actually stage 9 & 10 Indy’s (the least favorite Indy stage of all) with a inverted kingpin. It seems with so many Indy riders switching to Ace Trucks that Indy would go back to the stage 3 (the most favored stage Indy) instead of stage 9 & 10 the least favorite? BTW you rip and good review Ben!

    This vid really cheered me up whilst I ate pizza. I've got indy hollows and they're 53.5mm clearance instead of the usual 55mm, they're loose and when they're shipped in black they come stock with the softest bushing they make (RED) so now I've got the hardest bushing indy sell and it works but the next time I buy, I'm getting raw standard Indies. (TOO MUCH WHEELBITE)
    good turning and they look amazing :')
