While the MTH whistle sounds more accurate, as I’m sure they recorded the Big Boy’s whistle in person, I think that Lionel captures the power of it much better than MTH.

Also the Lionel vision 4014 is more in tune with the actual locomotive, cause even though I did not get to see the real one in person, but I did get to hear it's whistle and I can tell right away the Lionel 4014 is the better locomotive and I also saw a CZcams video of Big Boy 4014 clearing his throat and getting all the gunk out of the whistles and sounded exactly like the Lionel. If you get a chance to do so, get on CZcams and look up big boy 4014 blowing whistles after some years of storage.

Whistle battle? As much as I admire MTH products I've got to give it to the Lionel 4014. Bolder, guttier, and more authoritative. The MTH whistle ain't bad, but the Lionel is better.
LOVE that crowd scene! VERY clever!
TWO vintage scale Hudsons with "Mighty Sound of Steam!" Great! And your's WORKS! I picked up a Lionel ACL Hudson earlier this year with "MSoS" but when I shot the power to it I got the "Mighty Sound of Agony!" It let out a blood-curdling scream! Hey, no biggie, I pulled the bad sound unit out and installed a Williams steam whistle and bell package. It's fine now.
    Congratulations! Great scores all around!

My 10 year old son at the time (16 years ago) was well over the while Santa thing but he was a good sport as he had his little 5 year old brother. He told me he didn’t believe anymore and we had just recently watched the Polar Express movie. I was telling a good friend of mine at work about my Santa dilemma and how I missed that innocence. Space my friend happened to be a train enthusiast and was quite a bit older than me and had trains when he was a little kid. Space he suggested that I get the new Lionell polar express set and set it up Christmas Eve so that when the boys came down I might get one last you know I have a reaction from my 10-year-old. Space I did exactly that about some parchment paper and a gold sharpie and I wrote a letter from Santa with the bell that comes with the set and have a set running Christmas morning and they woke up to that sound of the train running. Space one of the all-time greatest Christmas moments for my kids and I’m sure it’s something they will never forget. Space but, a monster was born as I just love the train and each year I started the tradition of adding new train sets accessories buildings etc. My oldest son is also a two-time cancer survivor and because of this we have a family tradition we’re both sides of the family come to my house on Christmas Day because when he was sick we couldn’t travel. Christmas with my nieces and nephews growing up watching my Christmas layout trains have been a magical part of our Christmas tradition. So now I’m a train guy for life but lacking the true train guy skills LOL

MTH pfa sounds is great however I love the Lionel 4014 whistle better over the MTH Wistle on the big boy.

I liked the L:ional sound of the 4014. It had a echo quality to it.

  • @northpennvalleysteamrailroad

Awesome video Chris. I did see you at the train show on that Saturday but we never met. Cool stuff you got there, including the 785, 783, and the Big Boy. I also have the MTH Railking East Penn Railroad RS1 57! I live close to the real thing!

Saturday was a little crazy as I had one of my daughters with me and she kept running away from me, lol. Hope we can catch up this Fall!

No question! Lionel VL wins the whistle "sound" contest. I do like that the Restoration Series has whistle steam coming OUT the whistle though. That definitely is cooler than how the Lionel just has the whistle steam coming out a small hole. Great video!

I agree! I thought the whistle steam feature was pretty great as well on the MTH. Thanks for watching Jason!

Your excitement and enjoyment for the hobby comes through in your videos. It’s been fun watching your videos evolve. Great job. And, my vote is for the Lionel Big Boy. They both sound great but the Lionel sounds a bit more clear and has more oomph behind it.

    • @RBPTrains
      @RBPTrains  Před 2 lety

Thanks Vin! The Lionel model has a bit of an advantage as it has the 3 speaker system VS the tender speaker speaker system that is in the MTH model. Appreciate all your support!

Chris, comparing my video of the Big Boy whistle sound as it arrived in Hearne, Texas, the MTH tone is more realistic, however, I agree that the Lionel sounds better.
The oscillation of the MTH whistle is one of my issues in your video. Happy Trails Another great show !

The museum of transportation in St. Louis, Missouri has a big boy that you can climb up into the cab and sit where the engineer would sit. It is quite awesome.
