I got thinking backto the Nintendo Switch's launch and its promises of local multiplayer; this tactile approach that I really think was meant to "'catch on" but never really did. When related back to other consoles, I can't help but feel the Switch missed the mark.. and as it turned out, I wasn't alone in this thought!
Stumbling across a video in the algorithm, CZcamsr Dutchess goes into detail about her thoughts on the loneliness surrounding the ownership of a Switch. Her video is a fantastic jumping-off point to my thoughts.
    Enjoy!

Absolutely fantastic video, friend! I really feel so honored that you enjoyed my video enough to discuss your own take on it here. 😊 You raised a ton of great points that I totally forgot to mention like the DS being the highlight of a school bus ride! 😂 I think Nintendo did a poor job of implementing more social features for the Switch, and that reflects in their pretty limited number of co op games. There's Mario Kart 8, Smash Ultimate, 1-2 Switch, Mario Odyssey (I guess?), and Mario Party. At least that's all I can think off of the top of my head. It's just the same old games we've been playing through a million times before in the past on the DS, Wii, etc lol. Not trying to diss on those games since I do love playing them every now and again, but I'm sure you get what I mean.
This was a fantastic watch, and I was completely engrossed the whole way through! You have a ton of style and flair to the way you make your videos. It makes me feel like I still have a long way to go before I'm anywhere near this level of awesomeness! Keep up the amazing work and thanks again for taking the time to make this video! 😁

Thanks for taking the time to watch! You bring up some great follow-up points - and with some agreements in the comments already too - regarding the lack of co-op games in the library also hampering the social approach to the Switch. It's kinda hard to make yourself available to share your console with someone at a moment's notice when there's nothing to play together with it. You do bring up a totally valid point too with the repetition of some of those listed franchises that hit Switch - I totally get what you mean. 😅 I have a stack of about a year's worth of Nintendo Power magazines, and I remember even back in like 2008 at the peak of the Wii/DS era, some editors were writing columns and pieces about being underwhelmed by the lack of new concepts and features when Nintendo tried to iterate on existing franchises, so it's probably fair to say that problem has only been more exasperated over 15 years.
I appreciate your kind words! I think your videos are fantastic, I'm more than happy to say it for you. 😌 Keep doing what you're doing and I'll be more than happy to keep tuning in. Thanks again for watching!

Oh man, I don't even know if we exchanged friend codes, but saying "The DB" really brought back memories. "The DB" is something I still call it in my head to this day, to the point that I thought I might have made the nickname up out of nowhere.
I'll admit, when I was younger I had no interest in streetpass. Now that I'm older I do wish I'd turned it on in some places, just to see what would come of it. I don't know if maybe it's just the Switch's age, but I do feel the promise of gaming socially has lost its luster. Maybe it's because both my original joycons drift now. Who's to say? Meeting gamers in the wild does sound fun on paper, but I guess nowadays I would rather just have conversations with people

"The DB" is constantly what I called it, even when active there! I know for a fact DT, Trachy and others did too - it was likely more common than you think. :)
What I find most interesting is how your interests between Streetpass and the Switch's social features seemed to reverse over the years! I think that speaks a lot to my points made in the video; that as more interconnected gaming got over the internet, the more we wish Nintendo - and other companies maybe - stipulated more on non-videogamey social "gestures" while still utilizing their hardware. Thanks for watching!

From my experience the internet/tech has killed real socialization. Why go places when you can swipe Tinder friends or a similar service? Why hang out with your friends when you can just send a message? This is especially ruining women. When I go shopping or out in general, I never see young women anymore. All I see are other single men or families. Even 5 years ago, I'd see all kinds of people. Whenever people are physically together, most of them ignore each other and focus on their phone. Some people even always put in earbuds to further isolate themselves from everyone nearby and make anyone who tries to speak feel like an asshole.
I've never found handhelds to be social, though. I never played DS multiplayer with anyone. Nobody else ever carried their DS. I think I got a grand total of around 200 street passes while carrying it everywhere: colleges, cons, festivals. The Switch for me has actually come the closest to delivering, but mostly just people watching me play occasionally.
I think the biggest barrier for Switch is how single-player focused its library is. I would have offered to play with people a lot more, but save points are still a thing in most games, so you are locked in for a while before you can switch to a multiplayer game.

To briefly expand the convo past gaming, I do get what you're saying for sure. Especially when it comes to cold-meeting people, the population at large seems much more recessed and insular as they rely more and more on technology to do the socializing for them.
Very interesting perspective with the DS though, between both the regular line and the 3DS I definitely can recall far more social interactions involving them than I ever have with the Switch. I really related to the video in that I had this romanticized outlook on how you could share the joy-cons of the Switch, or how the Switch in general could maybe just be a conversation piece early on in its lifecycle, and I noticed absolutely none of that with it.
Adding to your points about the overabundance of single-player games, which I do agree with, I think an expansion on that could also be a lack of familiar multiplayer staples in its launch window and first year. Mario Kart was the exception to this and a huge re-release, but I would put money on the time taken for a proper Mario Party, Animal Crossing or Pokemon also impacting the lack of togetherness. It may not paint the entire picture but surely parts of it. Thanks for watching!

@@Petrisha The 3DS experience must vary based on how much your local culture carries things with them.
I figured being in the biggest city in the state and one of the biggest in the country would be enough, but it was dry getting street passes. I'd be interested see a heat map for where certain systems sold best geographically.
